**Sorry, PF1996. :D

Warner and Manning play in domes.....Can we put an asterisk by thier names?

Is it just me or is Ben Roethlisberger's passer rating surprising. Whenever I watch him he does not seem all that controlled but that number speaks for itself. He really is a legit QB and he definitely plays outdoors

A) that's going up every season after this one

B) Have you seen the names that aren't high on that list?

THE QB RATING IS THE WORST STAT IN THE WORLD

case and point? Brady 26 of 28 275 yards 3 TDs 0 Ints. 141 rating....

how can you have the most efficient game ever, and not have a 158.3 DUM RATING

Because it's comprised of four factors:
(1) Completion %
(2) Yards per attempt
(3) % of passes for TDs
(4) % of passes for INTs

Brady had perfect marks for (1), (3), and (4), but a perfect score for (2) requires ~11 yards per passing attempt.

i understand....

however, if one of his passes was 95 yards instead of 5, his average would have jumped to 11...which make it 158.3......still stupid

Wait a second... Big Ben wasn't on the list before 2007, and he shot up that much!?!?!

Are those numbers right?

Yeah, they are. Averaging a 104+ season into a four-year career's going to cause a jump.

Thanks for info but are sure that #2 is yards per ATTEMPT doesn't sound right must be yards per completion makes more sense in fact in the box scores just list incompletion. If I am correct Donte Stallworth cost TB perfect rating 275 yd + 26 +310 / 26 completions 11.58 yds per comp. Not that I am complaining Donte diving3 yds for a first down is the type of effort that epitomises this team

I guess he just recently qualified by attempts - although from this it looks like he is still under 1500 regular season attempts.

Big Ben and ****ington totally devalue that stat.

1. 275 yards on 28 attempts is not what I would call perfect. He deserves the NFL record, but he didn't deserve a perfect passer rating.

2. Passer rating is designed to measure performance over the course of an entire season. Using the stat for a single game says nothing about its accuracy.

3. Brady's passer rating for this game was limited by the cap on accuracy (at 77.5% of attempts completed). When calculating his season and career ratings, these caps have no effect. For all intents and purposes, Brady's passer rating in this game was slightly less than 149.

Passer rating is one of the most accurate, non-situational, non-adjusted statistics in all pro sports, where accuracy is defined by the correlation between a good passer rating and winning the game.

The whole passer rating thing does not correlate with situational football.. for example, there needs to be a way to weigh what Brady did on Saturday night as he controlled the game, played what the defense allowed him to have.. that was pretty perfect.. but otoh these are only numbers that justify why he is a HOF candidate, no other reason.

Yes #2 is correct. It is Yards per Attempt, not completion.

To get a perfect score for that one, you need to have around 11 yards per attempt.

Passer rating is a horrible stat. It is normalized against averages from the 70s while there is no good reason to not update it. Completion % was a lot lower back then and INTs were much more frequent. YPA was higher back then.

Besides, a quarter of it rewards something (TDs) which is highly situational and often outside the control of the QB.

Just look at Tom Brady prior to this year. Passer rating told us that Pennington, Culpepper, and Bulger were better QBs than Tom Brady (and Peyton much better).

It has it's uses, but calling it one of the better stats out there shows that you don't read KC Joyner (probably the best known football sabermetrician) or any baseball statistical analysis.

You have got to be kidding me.

First off, don't use the word "accurate" and then redefine what the word is supposed to mean. Just say that there is a high correlation between passing rating and winning. Although I question whether that correlation is higher than turnover differential, for example. Did you want to actually back up your claim?

As most of us are aware, passer rating is not all that good a statistic, but it is better than no statistic. There are a number of things that it doesn't take into account (e.g. situational passing) and others that it does but shouldn't (throwing the ball away instead of taking a sack lowers your passer rating and yet is clearly the better football play).

Finally, claiming that it is the "most accurate" is bogus; it is practically the only well-known statistic for evaluating passing that uses multiple criteria. I could make a new statistic solely with an eye towards have a higher correlation with winning the game (should I wish to spend the many hours of research to do so) and then have a "better" statistic. Only it wouldn't really be that much better because the goal should be to gauge how good the QB is, not just to find a correlation between a QB statistic and winning the game.

Blitz Ben and he'll kill you. He can make plays on the move or under pressure. As a pure drop back passer, he's subpar.

He had a good season. He has a great running attack to compliment his game. Shut that down, keep him in the pocket and make him beat you. Easier said than done, but at least you have a proven recipe to stop him.
