First, they trade down from #7 and pick up a mid/late first, and mid second
and maybe a pick next year.

1. Calais Campbell / Phillip Merling DE kind of odd, but need a backup for Seymour plus he may be retiring in a year or so given how beat up he seems
2. Chris Johnson RB E. Carolina
2b. Jack Ikegwuono CB Wisconsin
3a. Red Bryant DT Texas A&M
3b. Trae Williams CB S. Florida
4. Cliff Avril De/OLB Purdue
5. Jeremy Leman ILB
6. Darius Reynaud WR W. Virginia
7. Caleb Campbell S Army

I also assume Samuel, Stallworth and Colvin are gone and they will pick up Jason Taylor eventually off of the waiver wire (he's due something like 9M - too much for a rebuilding team). Jackson is traded for a 4th, which is used to trade up in the 2nd for 2b.

This is a very very heavy RB class, they could wait a round and still get a back better than Chris Johnson. I like the rest of it, of the players I know anyway.

Can you draft an Army player?

Are you on crack ? Seymour will retire at the ripe old age of 28 ?, just when he is hitting prime. :bricks:

Last year was his first major injury

He seems kind of worn out...maybe retiring at the end of next year.

Or maybe they just need someone better than he was this year.

It's hard to say if this year is an anomaly or the way things will be from now on.

Also, he may be better as a DT from now on than a DE.

1. ? RETIRING? Wow, thats a stretch of a rumor.

As for Taylor, Vets don't hit waiver wire, they are UFA once cut, no?

I like 2A/2B!

You may be right.

They may have to trade for him, which wouldn't be good as you'd have to give up a pick for a guy who most likely will be available as a FA.

I don't know if he'll retire, but I haven't seen him do much this year. Maybe he's rusty from injury.

This is his 7th year though, he may already be showing signs of wear and tear. I don't know.

I agree with McBee that Seymour's future is up in the air. Is cap hits are $7m and $10m over the next two seasons and extending himis risky given his recent contributions to the team. I think he'll start again next year, and if he has finally regained form, they'll extend him. If he doesn't regain form, they'll cut him after next year.

So DE is a definite consideration. If Campbell put on 10 lbs, he'd certainly look the part of a Patriot DE. Otherwise, I don't know much about him at this point. Later on, Kendall Langford, Kentwan Balmer, Demario Pressly, Nicholas Hayden, and Keilen Dykes have good size for our DE.

During the offseason, they become UFAs; during the season, after the trade deadline, they too are subject to waivers.

Well, I think that you are over-looking LeKevan Smith here, who looked better at DE than at NT. You're thinking isn't that far off, considering that Seymour's contract runs only through 2009, when he'll be 30. If he's looking for another huge payday, it probably won't be with the Pats. But I think that you're way off on the retiring thing.

Chris Johnson seems to be everyone's new binky.

Jack Ikegwuonu is probably off the Pats radar becase of the burglarly and criminal trespass charges that he is facing currently.

I think that Bryant might be a good fit, though I don't see the Pats looking at him that early..

Trae Williams seems like a good pick.

Avril does look to be a good DE/OLB pick, though it will be interesting to see if he lasts until the 4th round. He's graded as a 3rd rounder right now, so he might.

Leman is a reach in the 5th. He currently grades out as a 7th/FA pick. Could the Pats take him? Sure. Anything's possible.

As for Reynaud, do the Pats need another Wes Welker? *LOL* Sure, why not. Though there might be an attitude/ego issue :

Reynaud said:

I think Bryant is an excellent fit as the Pats backup NT. Just like it did with Wilfork, it will take Brant a few years to learn the 90 something different ways the opposing offense can block him, but eventually he will be a solid 3-4 NT.

Anybody that read the interview that Seymour did last week knows that he has not been healthy a a few years and is currently playing on one basically one good leg out there. I think he will have surgery again on the knee this off season.

Are you suggesting trading Chad Jackson for a fourth? I think that's probably the ultimate buy high/sell low strategy. He's less than a year removed from ACL reconstruction. I really think some people need to cut the kid some slack. It's not like he forgot to play football since Belichick made a big move up to grab him. He's making peanuts and is under contract for three more years. Are we going to head into next year with a WR corps of Moss, Washington, Welker, Brown, Childress, and Reynaud? That seems to leave a hole in the #2 slot, which I think will be Jackson's next year.

I don't see any way that Bryant lasts until the second day. He's the best 3-4 NT prospect in the draft, by a huge margin. I don't think he makes it out of the first round unless he shows up fat and lazy at the combine.

I wouldn't spend a #2 on Johnson, but now that it looks like Felix Jones is coming out, I certainly would take him there. With the avalanche of RBs coming out, he could drop to that spot. Maybe a little less top-end speed, but as good as or better agility and more accomplished on the field.

I doubt they go DE at #7, but I like the fact that you're thinking outside the box. Solid job overall.

Well the #7 would have been traded down to a mid/late 1st and a 2nd.

AS far as Jackson, I wonder if he can't mentally handle the job.

He's on for 2 more years, as a #2 rounder I believe he signed a 4 year deal.

A fourth might be good for him...disappointing but when a stock is down sometimes it's better to sell it rather than ride it to zero.

they may not go DE, but I remember him saying that these guys (6'4+ 300 pounds and agile) are the hardest to find. Merling would be more a DE/OLB type if he's quick enough.

If you go strictly by need....they need a few DBs, maybe 2CBs and a safety. They need ILBs but don't draft them, at least not high. They could use a DE/OLB but don't usually draft them high.

I don't think Gholston is a fit as much of the job is mental and there may not be a good indication he can do it. Too much to pay for a 'maybe'.

That leaves DE / DT, OL, TE, WR, RB....

Cousins,
I would like to take a stab at this. Tell me what you think. I tried to get all Pats type guys.
LB is a pressing need. CB could be bad if we lose both Samuel and Gay. I feel still that Assante might stay. I think the return of Chad Scott (also plays safety) and 2006 IR rookie Mike Richardson from Notre Dame, who would have made the 53 (kinda Red Shirted him with a hand(?) injury)....But the safety play has been awful this year. Never been a Sanders fan and he let me prove my theory correct. He is terrible.
I think Harrison comes back another year. He still has a few plays left. He needs to be in a rotation though. Wilson is gone (is this his FA year?). Merriweather looks like he might just start to get it. He need to put on about 15lbs of muscle and stay with the jugs gun the rest of the winter.Ventrone and Mitchell are both JAGS. Now what do we do?....

This might be dreaming but when BB gets a hankering for a certain player, he goes after them (see Welker!). His love affair with Ed Reed has been documented. The 29 year old Reed will be on a rebuilding Ravens team with no shot for a ring. They will have Gerome Sapp returning from IR at only 26 years old.
BB wants a quarterback for the defensive backfield who has range and is smart and experienced like they had with Harrison. This story with Reed might be similar. They also need to get someone who can make plays, cover and tackle, unlike they have now.

The Ravens desperately need a LT replacement for Ogden who will retire yet again. The also need quality top picks. My suggestion would be to trade our number one pick (#7) plus a very good OT prospect, Ryan O'Callaghan and the for mentioned S James Sanders (both young) for Ed Reed and the Ravens second round pick (#38). Hopefully our next choice would be #63 and last in Round 2. In Round 3, we have #69 from Oakland and hopefully the last in the third at #95.

Will we get a comp pick for Graham? Maybe a 4th?

Now back to the LB issue. Let's assume Seau retires. I hope Colvin comes back at a restructure. Fast ILB Al Wilson is available. He is supposely healthy and cleared to play in 2008. I think Al Wilson has some years left (30). He certainly is better in coverage than Seau and Teddy at the point. He was a tackling machine and still fast. He is 6' and 240lbs. Would make a great pairing with Teddy in 2008. As a rotation, AD can play some ILB or a youngster which we know is not the Pats way. BB wants an experience smart LB. Wilson and Reed would be perfect for this team. It solves some problems.

We need some better picks than we got last year, although 2006 was a light draft year, we were shut out other than Merriweather.

My early Draft:

2nd Round #38 from Ravens: Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas- Finally a big tall athletic CB at 6' 1" and a 4.47 40.

2nd Round #63:Frank Okam, NT, Texas-A large body solid back-up for Vince. A real playmaking NT.

3rd Round #69 from Oakland:Chris Ellis, DE/OLB, Virginia Tech-A 6' 5" , 260lb Willie M. type hybrid who can disrupt and make plays.

3rd Round #95: Jacob Tamme TE, Kentucky-Big tall fast TE with great hands (take that Ben Watson) Needs a few pounds. Will break other teams' hearts with clutch catches. A steal if around. Could have been a second rounder. Yes another TE. David Thomas? Another disappointing IR year. K. Brady a year older.

4th Round: Cory Boyd, RB, South Carolina-6' 1",214 pounds, runs a 4.48 and catches the ball of the backfield extremely well which is a Pats requirement. 35 passes for 406 receiving yards in 2006.All he did was produce and make big plays when needed. Perhaps a younger, quicker Sammy Morris.

4a-Comp from Graham:Jeremy Leman, ILB Illinois, Rated a little lower in 2007 than he should because of ankle surgery. Supposedly the best ILB at Illinois in a decade. 152 tackles in 2006. A smart BB player. 6'2" 240. Decent 4.7 speed. Could be a steal!

5th Round:Ben Moffitt, ILB, South Florida. 235 and 4.6 Speed. Always around the ball. Decent in coverage. Desires to play this game. Smart. Big weight room numbers. Either he or Leman will be groomed for ILB. Need two. We get two

6th Round:Jamie Silva, SS, Boston College-Wild man. Why this low? Haven't seen many better SS play this year. What am I missing? Was nicked a few games. 208lbs and a not slow 4.5 speed. Also returns punts. ST guy.

7th Round: Brian Bonner, SS, TCU Height: 5-11. Weight: 199. 40 Time: 4.50. Very active. Good tackler. Returns kicks. Needs to add 10lbs. Saw him play. Tough kid. Hard hitter. 4.5 sacks from SS.

Now we have some new talent in the middle with Wilson and Reed with the experience BB seeks and we have a great 2007 draft class for our real needs, what luck!

I'm going to post mine sans trades. But agree with McBee. I see a trade down in the cards.

1A V.Gholston - OLB/DE - Ohio ST
- Want a pass-rusher to attacks mssrs.; Manning,Rivers and Roethlisberger. I think his addition and the return of Colvin gives our defense depth that is lacking right now. Need fresh pass-rushers late in games. Fortunately for us. We're always ahead. But, can't always count on that.

2 B. Flowers - CB - Va Tech
- Might have to start as a rookie. Coming from a good def. system. If we really like him or someone else I wouldn't hesitate to move up. Rest of draft is for depth. We need a cb to start.

3A J. Goff - ILB - Vanderbilt
- If we sign a younger ilb in free-agency. I would use this pick to trade up for a better cb prospect in round 2. a

3b J. Barrett - S - Arizona St
- I don't see E.Wilson coming back. Rodney another year older. Depth.
Good size. Coming from a pass-orientated conference. Shouldn't be over-whelmed with the nfl.

4 C. Jackson - CB - LSU
- Can push R.Gay as nickel back. I like those lsu db's. Seem well prepared to play at the next level.

5 A. Rubin - NG - Iowa ST
- Don't think we have any prospects behind Big Vince. Allows us to keep M.Wright and L.Smith at de where they seem more effective.

6. A. Patrick - RB - Oklahoma
- Upperclassman at OU who shared playing time with A.Peterson last year. And, a couple of super youngsters. D.Murray and C.Brown. Stepped up when team needed him late in year. I watch a lot of OU football. Seems like a team guy. I'm sure he'd play special teams which is what he would have to do for a couple of years if he makes our team.

7. J. Finley TE - Oklahoma
- Versatile kid. Played qb in high school. All over at OU. Can long-snap. Watch out L. Paxton.

Cousins,
But the safety play has been awful this year. Never been a Sanders fan and he let me prove my theory correct. He is terrible.

I don't know that Belichick agrees with you.

That depends on how long Reed has left on his current contract, and how much it would accelerate the Ravens' cap hit to let go of him. [This is why, for example, Wes Welker is untradeable at the moment; if they did, the Pats would have to eat a $7M cap hit in 2008 (or 2008/2009).]

Will we get a comp pick for Graham? Maybe a 4th?

Absolutely zero chance. No team has ever gotten comp picks for a season in which they had a net gain of FAs.

I think David Thomas has just basically had bad luck the last two years--being stuck behind two #1 draft picks last year, and a freak injury this year (remember--the Pats wanted Thomas badly enough that they did not put him on the PUP list at the start of the regular season). I think that when the Pats look at TEs, blocking will be just as important as catching, if not more so.
