Randall Gay on Reggie Wayne

Overall, I liked what BB did by playing Hobbs as the nickel and starting Gay against the taller Jax wideouts. Overall, I thought Gay played well. With the success that Wayne has had against Hobbs, I'm wondering if BB would stick with this scheme and play the bigger Gay against Wayne and match up Hobbs on the smaller and quicker Gonzales, I think Hobbs would match up much better with Gonzo than he does with Wayne.

We all know BB won't switch his corners, I just want to see how Randall would do against Wayne with his bigger size and pretty consistent covers skills.

Ofcourse I'm making the assumption that it will be Indy, but at this point, I think that's safe to assume.

If Hobbs is healthy enough, he's on Wayne. Then we just have to hope he doesn't get screwed by BS PI calls again.

The thing with Wayne's success over Hobbs is that perhaps Hobbs can only get better by repeatedly playing against Wayne.

I'm not entirely sure though, but I still like Hobbs on Wayne.

Randall Gy sucks...this is a moot conversation. There is NO WAY Gay played because of Jax receivers. Hobbs was not healthy enough to go...period.

This is inaccurate. Hobbs has faired pretty well against Wayne, and Wayne's biggest plays against him have come off some pretty absurd PI calls. Remember, Hobbs even received a league apology for that bad PI call in the 2007 AFCCG.

I don't think Gay has the quickness to cover Wayne as effectively by the way. Also, if Hobbs wasn't nursing an injury he'd have started over Gay against Jacksonville.

yeah...I don't really sweat any of this because I look at the Colts secondary and wonder how THEY will stop Moss,Welker,Stallworth and Watson..remember,Welker TORCHED Sanders big time in the game at Indy.

Hobbs didn't start because of his groin. A healthy Hobbs is a starting patriots CB, period. The patriots should device some nice schemes to limit the harm done by Wayne and Marvin. If Hobbs is healthy he will be starting, and it is very beneficial to the Patriots if Hobbs was at 100% health next week, so let's hope.

I may be of the minority but if SDs front 7 play a great game and LT hits on all cylinders like he has done in the latter part of the season then SD has a decent chance to beat Indy tomorrow.

Then you are talking about Gay against Vincent Jackson which is an easier cover of course....

Lets wait a bit then talk more after 5pm tomorrow shall we?.....

I do not see how anyone can say Randall Gay sucks. He played great when we needed him to in 2004 and has had the injury bug on and off since. He's never going to be a shutdown corner but the guy does the best with what ability he has. He's never horrifically beaten, he's our best tackling CB and he has good technique. He just doesn't have the fast hips you need to be a shutdown corner.

I was getting quite a chuckle out of this thread until I got to your post. How can anybody ignore that Gay was good enough as an UNDRAFTED ROOKIE to win a Super Bowl as a starting CB ?? ?? ??

Now maybe he isn't as good now as he was then, even with so much more experience -- ? -- but I kinda think I have to reserve judgement on that. And by the way, he did make at least one play today that saved a touchdown. Hmmmm.

you thought Gay played well? rewatch the game. he was dissapointing . i expect more from a 6"1 corner who was supposed to be a star on this team. hes really under performed all year. besides his tackling, i dont think hes done anything better than Hobbs

I agree. Gay made one play in the entire game - breaking up the pass to Jones in the corner of the endzone (a ball that Jones still could have made). Otherwise, I thought that he was completely ineffective and very tentitive. Rodney had to chew him out after a play when he blew a coverage badly. In the 3rd quarter, I admitted to my friend next to me in section 114 that I never thought that I'd miss Hobbs so much. Wayne will eat him alive next week if they are matched up.

Bullsh*t, that is a bullsh*t thing to say that makes no sense.

I don't believe Gay starts over a healthy Hobbs, mind you, but you just tore down a guy that is obviously good enough to play for the Patriots, and so you must be wrong - butt wrong.

DBs get this crap all the time because their job is basically impossible. They also get to cover from out of position when another DB blows the coverage, and guys like you conclude the wrong thing about who blew the play.

I thought Gay was the glaring weakness on D last night, but sometimes it's hard to really tell when you don't have the commentary or instant replay. It seemed like he was exposed quite a few times.

the pats secondary plain sucked last night. asante gave up two touchdowns and a ton of passes, and the rest of them sucked as bad as he did. i have never seen such poor coverage in my life. the rest of the team showed up to play, but the dbs were screwing off. lets hope the dbs show up next week, cause brady cant play perfect every time.

I still wonder if there is a reason other than injury why Gay was playing instead of Hobbs. BB certainly suggested as much with his postgame comments. Height comes to mind as a possibility. Pretty much the only thing the Jags receivers have going for them is that they're tall--maybe Gay was supposed to help there.

It's pretty clear that Hobbs is a little banged up--the question is how banged up is he exactly? Too banged up to start? Too banged up to return kicks? Still, he wasn't banged up enough not play at all. Wierd.

Anyway, the Hobbs injury is the only thing I'm worried about right now regarding the D. The run D was great against the Jags. Asante seemed to have a bit of an off day, but history shows he'll bounce back. Hobbs though was great last year in the AFCCG I thought. We're going to need him back and healthy next week.

I was disappointed as much as anyone in the play of the secondary, especially when it came to hits, and being too far off in coverage, but...

The Pats 'd' was designed to stop the big running attack, which required an extra man in the box, which leaves the secondary at a disadvantage.
In addition, Garrard is hard to bring down, and he extended some plays for a few extra seconds, which as we all know from watching Brady, if you give a decent NFL qb 5+ seconds, he WILL find a man nearly every time.

Not to mention, Jax is one of those teams that has multiple receivers in the 6'3 - 6'5 200+ range, which is a load in WR terms.
Imagine covering guys all built like TO and Plaxico Burress all night long when you're at a 3", 20+lb disadvantage.
This is where guys like Merriweather & Harrison are so useful, because they are hitters, and that's about the only way to have a chance against guys like that.

i think its a combo of height and injury. They might've thought that if going up against tall WRs all game..he would be doing a lot of jumping and maybe hurt his groin more. Hobbs said hes ready for next week..it was kind of a rest for him.
