Pats inactives
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

Inactive players for the Patriots tonight:

QB Matt Gutierrez (3rd quarterback)
S Eugene Wilson
DB Antwain Spann
RB Kyle Eckel
S Ray Ventrone
OL Wesley Britt
OL Billy Yates
DL Rashad Moore

THIRD QUARTERBACK NOTE: The third quarterback can play in the game. If the third quarterback appears in the first, second or third quarters, the first and second quarterbacks can not return. If the third quarterback plays in the fourth quarter, all quarterbacks are still eligible to play.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Would love to see Troy make something happen tonight.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

I am surprised Eugene is inactive instead of Troy, will Chad be running back kickoffs tonight with Hobbs nursing a groin injury during the week?

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

That's a great injury report. K.Brady, Hobbs and Harrison all play. Kazur to :singing:

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

I think it is a sign that Merriweather has surpassed him as the backup at safety.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Might be a homer thing to say, but I'd much rather see Welker running back kickoffs and punts. As quick as he is, he might be able to make a few things happen on special teams.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Eugene, my binky why the hell do you always have to get injured! Doesn't really matter though seeing as he's lost his job as starter to a rising James Sanders.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Hmm, maybe Jackson takes over some of Hobbs special teams duties.

Oh, and last year against Jacksonville was among the few times NE's used Jackson at returner...

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Pretty good inactive list, a little surprised Wilson is inactive. I think it shows there is a pretty good shot this is his last year with the Patriots.

Re: Pats Inactive (Chad, Troy active)

Neal is playing also I take it. That is very good. :rocker:

To important to risj injury running back kicks. Brown and Jackson are more then capable.

Whoever's doing whatever, PROTECT THE BALL! That's all I ask.

THATIS a good list....Yates...Britt...meaning that Kaczur Neal are better....Ventrone, Spann, Eckel...meaning there are OTHERS to play ST...Troy..CJ...Surprised about Moore...although he did NOT play in teh Giants game...Wilson?? Hmmmm

I take two very good signs from this development:

1) Wilson being inactive (assumed a healthy scratch) means that Willie Andrews is good to go. Why is this significant? Andrews (IMHO) is a better KO/P gunner than Eckel and if we had no Eckel AND Andrews, I'd have been more concerned about ST coverages.

2) The right side of the OL that we have been missing the past 4 weeks (Neal, Kazcur, K.Brady) is back and ready to kick ass!!!!!!!!!

Wilson's a cover corner, not a mauler. For this game, he's really not as good a fit as the more physical players against the run.

I agree.

I disagree with Pats1 saying "he sucks". Actually, I think it would be a great situation if the Pats can get him next year for low money as a CB (his natural position).

doubt he comes back. hes lost a lot of playing time..the market for safeties is weak and we have his spots filled out

he'll make decent money elsewhere.. even though he hasnt played much this season

Some possible gameplan conclusions:

on O: spread em out - 7 WR's active. Make their weak backup DB's cover the likes of Welker, Troy, even maybe CJ. Lots of 1 back sets.

on D: Expect a heavy dose of 3-4, with considerably less nickel/dime packages. We won't see much of the 4-3 either. Take away the run game, and force Garrard to beat us through the air. Sounds solid to me.

Counting down the minutes...
