He wont take over brady's job right away, very good physcal qualities for a qb combine with bb and brady mentoring he can be a very qood back and also future trade bait for other teams.

This pick will not disrupt the defense or the offense, its a good pick for a high valued player and it addresses the future for the patriots not to mention Matt Ryan can probally win games against the jests and dolphins.

And then we'll trade him to the Colts for Reggie Wayne and Bob Sanders.

And he'd be getting more money than Wes Welker to basically ride the pine full time.

OK mesoslo, now you're just funnin' us. Come on, you can cook up something juicier than that! Where are your trademark trades for established stars? Or the dreams of a top-10 WR?

I think it'd be more likely to see the Pats trade their 7th pick and Jarvis Green to the Bengals for Chad Johnson.

And that won't happen.

The pick "won't disrupt the offense or defense".

Well I guess that's right. But the standard of a #7 pick is someone that DOES make a "disruption" or at least is noticeable on offense or defense. Not someone who sits around.

Ryan isn't very good, I think you could find a half a dozen career backups (Chris Redman like) who would play for less and you wouldn't have to waste a pick on them. But that's almost beside the point.

Brady will probably play 5,6 or more years. At which time Ryan's rookie contract will have been up. So the whole point of drafting his "replacement" now is stupid anyway. Ryan wouldn't be good, IMO, as he sucks. He overthrows people all the damn time. Where's the accuracy?

The more I read about Brady, the more I think he stays in the game as long as possible. I would not be surprised to see Brady play even longer than 5-6 years and at a high level for most of it.

Totally agree. Brady has never relied on athleticism to succeed. He has won Sbs with a weaker arm than he has now, and when he was slower afoot. So even if he declines athletically he can still play and win. The only thing that can shortcircuit his career, other than the obvious, is if life outside football intervenes, and he loses a bit of his dedication and competitive fire. That usually happens with the demands of family and children, and is totally normal. His competitive fire and killer instinct are the engine of this team, and if he flags even a little the whole team will start to cycle down.

But he seems to love the game so much I could see him playing until 37, 38. And then go into coaching.

Brady into coaching ? No chance.. He will run for Senate from CA or MA. Future politician/Prez in the making with first lady Gisele

From Miguel's Cap Pages, it looks like Brady is signed for three more years, with $13.5m in base salary and $23.6m in unaccrued salary bonus. That's an average cap hit of $12.4m. Quite a bit more than the $7.3m he had this year, but still not enough to cut him over.

I'm going out on a limb - we won't draft Matt Ryan at #7.

Brady will be extended this offseason.

Brady will be extended this offseason.

Quite likely. His cap hit was $7.3m this year and will otherwise be about $12.8m next year. I expect that his cap figure next year, via extension or other means, will be in the neighbourhood of $11.5 - $12.5m.

He is on a contract that should pay him about $11m per year and his cap hits so far (half way through the contract) have averaged about $10m.

I guess that means, in addition to finding $6m per year for the #7 pick, and $8m per year for Moss, and $8m per year for Samuel, we need another $4-5m for Brady's cap number.

ok lets just say we do draft someone at #7 the pats will still have to pay #7 money.

Well then maybe the pats will trade down, well, why?
If the pats win the superbowl and this pick turns out to be a bust, it will be just like the pats traded down to pick someone lower and they turned out to be mediocore or a bust. Well then you dont have to pay or take the cap hit. Well its not like you need all that specious cap space to improve your team, especially if you won the super bowl and went 16-0.

think of Bill Bellichick, as the greatest coach ever, now watch what he can do with the first qb coming out of the draft. Any player that is on the patriots qb roster will always be under another teams radar. Now if he was once a first round pick well then more interest of course.

If brady gets injured for like 4-5 games I want am excellent phyiscally gifted qb to step in, combined with BB defense the pats will always be a super bowl contender.

Miguel has Brady's cap hit at 14.7m in 08. If anything, restructuring will bring that number down. Probably to sign rookies if we can get out of the Top 10.

Yes, by vitue of being picked by BB, he will be a huge success. As Dexter Reid, Guss Scott, and a myriad of other players were.

You make no sense.

You don't pay millions to a guy who will be great b/c he was picked at #7 supposedly. AS if being picked by BB anointed him with some magical power. How has he done with Cassell? Guttierez? Why aren't they pro-bowl QBs even as backups? If he can't do it with them, why with Ryan? Ryan sucks. He's not good. Being picked by BB won't make him "good".

If you want someone to fill in for Brady, you get a guy who has already played. NOt a rookie. Especially when teh rookie would make 4x as much money as the veteran.

Your illogic is so overwhelming and so stupid, it's just breathtaking.

either way you will have to pay a lot for it so might as well grab a high QB that you can use to trade with another team or develope yourself.

cassel and guttierez are not 1st round picks, that is probally why they dont play in the pro bowl.

If Brady goes down I can see a Matt Ryan leading the patriots to a AFC championship game.

Especially with a good set of WR corps.

Mcbee,
Why are you so down on Ryan? I watched him alot and thought he had some good qualities- obviously not for the Pats, but for some other team in the 1st rd.
