I would be thrilled with these picks!

Said picks being Malcolm Jenkins, Vince Hall, Chris Johnson, and Chevis Jackson. This guy had us taking Johnson before too. Must be his binky, because with all the quality RBs in the draft, it's hard for me to see Johnson going before the fifth round, unless that 4.2 reported speed is legit, which I tend to doubt. Hall is an interesting consideration. Using his draft, I'd opt for:

1. Vernon Gholston OLB Ohio St
2. Anthony Collins OT Kansas
3a. Trae Williams CB South Florida
3b. Owen Schmidtt FB West Virginia

After seeing Gholston be a nonfactor in the NC game, i think i'd pass on him (at least as a #7 pick. I might be willing to trade down for him though). The other picks look good.

Yeah, the only other option, for me, is Sam Baker. Either way, I think #7 is too high, but there's nobody else I'd consider in that spot. I guess that's a charitable way of saying I'm not so high on Malcolm Jenkins.

Don't forget that the shift to OLB should help Gholston once he adapts.

Surprised you'd say that about Baker. Packs no pop in the run game, seems ordinary in pass pro.

I feel the same way on the CB situation in general. I'm not sure we can't get good corners later on - it seems deep at the position, whereas consensus on the top one is spotty.

At #7, I like the Longs and not much else anymore. I'm very interested in the trade down. Atlanta looks like the best option to me.

Concering the originally posted Mock (from Walterfootball.com):

Malcolm Jenkins could be a good CB, but maybe Cason would be a better option with a trade down?

Vince Hall's probably to small for BB's system.

Chris Johnson could be an option, but he's likely going later in the draft. I'd also like to know who takes fliers with early third round selections?

Chevis Jackson's actually a player I like, but I don't know if he makes it to the very end of round three.

-------------------------------------
Concerning your Mock:

Gholston makes more sense at 4-3 DE or 3-4 1 gap OLB (think SD). I could see the Patriots trying to develop him, but I don't know if they'd spend a top ten pick on him. To me he's pretty raw and at least somewhat of a project for a 2 gap system.

I thought Trae Williams was getting projected higher than that? It is the early third though, so he might be there.

Owen will likely be around in the fourth if NE's interested, so there's probably no sense in spending a 3rd rounder on him. I like this video of him by the way

Something about his athleticism tells me he'd do well in the Pats scheme. He suffered that bad knee injury last January, so I don't know how well it has recovered vs. how well it will be come August. I would like to see a little more nasty out of him, though. I have him right now as my #2 rated OT, although he's a considerable drop from Long.

I'm not sure how much different the OLBs job is in a 1 gap or 2 gap 3-4. It seems like the real differences are with the DL and the ILBs. Granted, in Phillips defense, an OLB is rushing the passer every play, compared to Belichick's where their job gets more complex. However, I don't think Gholston is that one-dimensional that he can't play contain or cover a running back. I think he's the best DE ---> 3-4 OLB conversion project to come out in a few years now...better than Wimberly, who I previously thought. I like him better than Spencer last year...and I was a huge Spencer fan.

Though you must admit, Seb has a point. Would BB invest the pick and $6m per year in Gholston as a coversion project? He has shown some aversion to conversion projects of this nature before, and the money that goes along with it almost seems prohibitive.

Oh, I absolutely agree with that point. The problem is that I don't see anybody really worth the #7 pick, and I'm not assuming a trade down. An OT or DB may be the safer pick, but this team could really use an elite pass rushing OLB, and Lord knows there aren't many of those with the size and on-field intelligence Belichick needs.

Spot on, Dryheat. I could not agree more.

Regarding this mock and the draft itself, I'm not thrilled with the first round talent available for the Pats -- though there appears to be lots of talent from R2 on.

At the early #7 slot, I clearly want someone who will make an impact by at least year two. C. Long or Gholston would seem to require less developmental time. Long is a monster now, while Gholston does have some LB experience and should make the transition to OLB. After them, CB Cason would fill a need (although #7 is a bit early). The knock is his speed (but let's wait for his workouts). Fact is, he's highly experienced at CB, having played the position since he was a kid. He's been called technically sound -- which may be mighty appealing to BB and Co. RB Stewart is the last first-rounder I like (from the mock) -- but highly doubt we'd take a RB early.

Another CB I'm high on is Trae Williams (like him better than Jenkins). Possibly R2-3. His style of play fits the Pats more than others.

Two other prospects not listed in this mock that BB/Pioli may be interested in are OG/OT Robert Felton, Arkansas. Very smart, very versatile. Lastly, if we pass on Gholston, keep an eye on DE/OLB Shawn Crable. Clearly a developmental prospect, if he appears to be coachable, his raw skills are worth the gamble for any team wanting a productive edge rusher and strong ST player. Both may be R3 considerations.

Unless someone really shines during Senior Bowl week, the all-star games, Combine, or workouts, that #7 slot IMO is slim pickins. Prefer a trade-down...but I guess we'll just play the hand we're dealt.

if it is not broken dont fix it, so if the lb core is working now, why draft someone so high? Do you think these vets will like it? they have shown they can get the job done.

If bb can flip a 6th round pick qb into a gem I wonder what he can do with matt ryan?

physical qualities of matt ryan should be reall good like starter level. I really think the patriots can be a contender with a really good running game, BB's vanilla defense, and a rookie qb. they might not go undefeated but they will contend for years to come.

As nutty as taking another QB in the first round at #7 sounds, I will say this. Most of the great dynaties in football have all ended when that team's QB play slipped.
Only San Fran was able to plug in a Young after Montana and sustain it a few more years.

I see Johnson's games since I live where ECU is, and his speed/hands are legit.

Here's an udated 4-round draft from............

http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2008.php

Pats picks:

1. Mike Jenkins, CB (Still don't like this pick)

2. Beau Bell, ILB (Not bad)

3a. Chris Jonhnson, RB (Is Faulk all done? I don't thinks so, but this kid is tough and can fly)

3b. Charles Godfrey, CB (I've seen him get burned more than a couple of times vs. good WR)

4. Shawn Crable, LB (Will he last till the end of the 4th round? Doubt it)

This looks like a deep draft with good, not great, players. Pats should do well if they trade down and pick up a two or a three.

Given who's on the board when we pick. I'd take V.Gholston at 7. Then trade up for a cb in Round 2 using our three. I'd even take another cb with the 3rd rounder we got from Oakland. I know he's a work in progress. But, Justin King can become a player at the next level. He has tremendous speed, good hands. Absolutely no baggage with him. Graduated from PSU in 3 YRS.
Everyone(myself included) wants to trade down. But, it takes two to tango. This is being called a deep draft without premier talent. I'm hoping M.Ryan is gone before we pick. Then some team will be worried Baltimore will take B.Brohm and they decide to move ahead of them.

King turned himself in to police to face charges of trespass and harassment in April. The charges were dropped, however, because of lack of evidence. It remains to be seen if certain teams take King off their draft boards in the wake of this incident.

It was from a fight at an apartment. A couple of players got into a fight with another student. There were other players who went to the apartment with them. King was one of the other players. Not exactly baggage.
