I remember Del Rio laughing it up on the sidelines after the vicious Donovin Dariuns hit vs GB's Robert Ferguson a few year back. Ferguson was being carted off the field immobilized from the clothesline blow when the camera panned to Del Rio laughing. I also remember the comments that Del Rio made about Clint Ingram's spear on Brady last season. IMO Del Rio ordered his players to spear Brady after a few successful scrambles earlier in the game. Afterwards, Del Rio said that Ingram "should have speared him". Del Rio played the game in the same fashion himself as an old school LB. He and Jeff Fischer coach the same style game, old USC alums and competition committee cronies.

Welker is a matchup nightmare for the Jags. Del Rio knows his team has no answer for the Pats spread offense. Even Pittsburgh was virtually unstoppable once they went no huddle. I expect the Jags' game plan to include cheap shots on #83, similar to the way Greg Williams played it when the Pats spanked Washington. It was evident early in that Redskin contest that knocking Welker out of the game by any means necessary was part of Mrs. Doubtfire's gameplan.

It won't matter. The Jag D-line has no speed rusher and the Brady will shoot fish in a barrell all game long. Get ready for an epic ass-whooping.

Jax (and TN) is one of the dirtiest teams in the entire league. They will play it straight up, try to dominate the LOS and if they find themselves falling behind they break out the cheap schit.

I am honestly far, far more fearful of losing a Pat player to a dirty hit than I am losing the actual game.

notice how usually when someone is coming welker falls to the ground if he cant get extra yards? its for a reason, and he may been instructed to do it as well...

u dont catch 102 catches in a season over the middle and keep going at it by getting maximum contact, welker should catch ball, if he can safely make a move make it, if he needs a 1st down get it, otherwise just go down

That's what this really boils down to. I have no worries about the Pats winning this one, but I don't like that the Jags are notorious for cheap hits and dirty play.

Hopefully Belichick is spending a good amount of time focusing his players on that point as much as anything else heading into this game.

During the players strike in 1987, I remember Sports Illustrated ran a shot of Del Rio (rookie or 2nd year player for the Vikings, I believe) on the ground tussling with an assistant coach (I think). The shot was supposed to show the tension caused by the strike, but I don't remember any other players getting into fisticuffs; Of course this was before the internet so maybe other incidents occured and I didn't know about them. Instead of thinking how high tensions were, I thought who is this Del Rio jerk?

Yet we have all seen Rodney Harrison take out a quarterback's knees during preseason while playing for the San Diego Chargers. Be careful what you wish for Del Rio, because you might not have another quarterback for another year or two.

Good advice for any WR, except maybe David Boston. Let the TEs and RBs fight for yards; WRs and QBs should take what is available and then hit the deck. Catching 10-yard passes for the rest of the season in more important than gaining an extra yard. The only caveat might be if it is third down and you need that one yard for a first. Otherwise, drop after giving me ten.

That's the problem.
Welker is a third-down possession guy who's often sent onto no-man's land across the middle where the cheapshot is easy to give. I'm not worried about him, though, because he's done well avoiding and/or absorbing the hits. You don't think the league's been trying to knock out the Pat's top receiver (in catches) all season?...and they haven't had much success.
