I'm sure by now that many here know that I enjoy reading footballoutsiders. You may also know my opinion of their less-than-stellar writer, Bill Barnwell.

Well, Bill again puts together a ranking of "likely playoff success ability" called special sauce. What is most surprising? Try this out for size: NE is the second lowest rated team in the entire playoff field, grading out just barely ahead of the Giants and just behind Washington.

{I tried to bring the chart over, but I can't get it formatted right, so screw it.}

Some interesting tidbits about the ranking system include:

1) The only offensive measure (out of 8 categories) is 3rd quarter offense.

2) Road D is a category despite NE never having to go on the road.

3) Somehow NE grades out as middle of the pack in "late and close" situations. Other than this being kind of flukey due to limited times that NE was in a close game late, I'm kind of befuddled by this. Seems to me that the D stepped up bigtime every single time NE found itself in a late and close situation.

Fear not, for hwc takes the system to taks early and often in the comments section. You can side with him if that helps alleve your worries.

But the rest of us are going to go cower in the corner because NE is obviously the worst 16-0 team in the history of the league. Someone is going to have to explain to me how they lucked into beating the 5 teams above them, because that is clearly what happened.

I like FO as much as the next guy but those stats he's picked are so arbitrary. He uses PR. But not PR defense, KR or KR defense. RZ D but not RZ O.

Honestly, this isn't "Uh Oh" this is "WTF".

Don't try to rationalize it my friend. Just accept that you are watching a terrible 16-0 team. Probably the worst ever.

Well to be fair, we are the worst 16-0 team in the history of the league, if you're talking about regular season. Name one that was worse.

Yes, the Patriots are Jeckel and Hyde, the best and worst 16-0 team the league has ever seen.

I love this line from the article. After pointing out that the Pats are 2nd to last in his ranking, he says:
There are a couple of details here which could give Patriots fans hope.

Whew! I'm glad there's reason for hope! Because after seeing that chart, I'd given up, and switched my sights to pitchers and catchers reporting.

That's an over-the-top analysis.

Clearly, however, the Pats are the most overrated 16-0 team in history.

Can Playoff Index predict playoff results on a game-by-game basis, though? Not to the point where I’d want to place money on it.

This caveat emptor says it all. He doesn't put his stock in it, neither should anyone... I really wonder how much these FO guys really put $ where their mouths are...
In the security market, free information is worthless ...

It was the best of teams, it was the worst of teams. Nah, it was pretty much just the best of teams.

.

Stupid, arbitrary analysis, yet, I see the Gians ahead by 1 TD and 1 FG right now....interesting.

Ridiculous...

It's only this one author. For the most part, FO is a wonderful website... but this cherry-picking of ridiculous stats (why is punt returning so important in the playoffs, but not kick returning?!?!) is just stupid.

Statistical analysis only gets you so far. It works in baseball because of the one-on-one battle between pitcher and batter. It usually fails in games like football, hockey, etc. where there's so many variables.

Wierd, I could have sworn the Patriots beat 6 of those teams (Indy, Dallas, SD, Pitt, NYG, and Washington) by a combined score of 234-119.

Yeah, I love how they ranked NYG last but they completely dominated TB.

I see that being six places ahead of the Giants really helped those Bucs out today.

I'm glad someone finally brought that up. Where does this team stand in terms of 16-0 regular season teams? I just don't see them being better than any other.

It's amusing to note that 3 of his top 4 teams are from the AFC South, which probably influenced his selection of metrics. After all the Colts beat them all twice (except for the gimme they handed the Titans) and they all then dominated their games against the strength of the NFC aka NFC South... and AFC West...

His last team excelled in Tampa Bay....and one of his top 4 couldnt cross the line in SD.

Good example of statistical dysentery though!
