They made their first attempt. It was a questionable hold call that took it away. And I'm the first to point out the squeelers have been the beneficiary of too many bogus calls on teams they play against. But, in this case that was almost as bad as the turned over interception call against Indy. But, as we know no one gets more beneficial officiating than Indy.

The general rule is kick early go for it late, as any singular point can end up winning the game for you. The Steelers have killed themselves by going for two point conversions, and fourth down conversions when they shouldn't have.

Whether they should or would have made it or whatever is besides the point. The question is what is the higher percentage play.

With 10 minutes left, you just shouldn't chase the extra point when kicking will put you down by 4. Your opponent is going to get the ball back and is likely to have one more possession than you in the rest of the shortened game. You are putting yourself in position where your opponent can beat you with a field goal even if you score a TD.

From a risk/reward standpoint, it makes no sense. From 12 yards out it's a horrible decision.

Down by one, of course you go for the 2. But the difference between down by 4 at home with 10:00 left and down by 5 is very large.

I was 50/50 on the choice when Tomlin made it: 10 minutes left, you get up by 3 if you make it and push the momentum... fine. But once the penalty was called, you HAVE to kick it so that scoring a TD puts you up by 3.

It's a little less than 50-percent chance of converting a 2-pointer from the 3-yard line. I have no idea what the percentage is from the 12 (possibly zero as the Steelers might be the only ones to have tried it). :bricks:

this game's a perfect example. Two PATs means a 31-31 game if the Steelers keep the Jags out of the endzone.

Look at it this way: if the Steelers had just kicked the first PAT instead of trying to score 2 from 12-yards out , even if the Jags had scored a TD, then Pittsburgh would have been down 11 points (2 scores) not 12 (3 scores). Plus, the fact they had to go for 2 after their final TD hurt them.

Of course, it didn't help that they called a terrible fade pass.

I was okay with going for the 2 initially, but going for it after the penalty made no sense at all. With 10 minutes left, you have to expect that your Offense can move the ball for one more score.

I should say that I liked the initial call of going for 2, but when they got the penalty it became a lot worse.

Any else catch Tomlin press conference? He said something along the lines of that down by 5, one point is meaningless/worthless, so you go for two and then basically every has the same chart and that what's the chart says.

Unbelievable. It was as if he literally didn't think being down by 4 was any different than 5, this is with 10 minutes left in the game. These guys coach as if their opponent can't score again. Ouch.

Both coaches in that game sucked. Del Rio challenged a call that had no chance of being overturned. I felt pretty good about facing whomever came out the winner.
