I was checking out his bio on Wikipedia. Some things that stood out:

- played center field in baseball, which some argued was his best sport. Rick Fields, a scout for the Chicago Cubs, said, "He has the most range in the field that I have ever seen."
- had scholarship to Notre Dame that was revoked after he was involved in "racially charged fight." ND coach Lou Holtz said Moss was "the greatest high school athlete I had ever seen — a bigger Deion Sanders;"

- prior to attending Marshal, was a red-shirted freshman at Florida State. While there he ran a 4.25 40-yard dash,[6] with only Deion Sanders being faster (4.23).

when u understand some of the stuff he went thru you sympathize for w/ him. must have been devastating to have his ND scholarship revoked because of some altercation he may have been caught up in. if he had played at ND w/ better talent around him and all that exposure probably would have gone #1 overall.

IIRC the reporting of the altercation, it basically went like this:

A. Some racists made grafitti threats.
B. Moss and some friends went and beat them up.

what do u think of moss's actions in this case?

I don't know the details, so it's pointless to comment on it, but generally speaking it's probably not a good idea to go looking for fights, as evidenced by him screwing his ND scholarship.
not to mention the fact that in the next instance we may be reading about some poor upcoming star getting shot.

Its kinda sad that his career and legacy has become about what he's done wrong, even though he has still done his part on the field. Back to his HS career, he was also awarded for being the best football player in WVA his senior year in high school(no surprise), but also won the award for best highschool basketball player senior year AND junior year. He was on the same team as Jason Williams but was considered the much better player/prospect and was recruited by all the big basketball programs. Football was supposedly his 3rd best sport in highschool.

When you see clips like the one below...it really isn't surprising to hear what Holtz and others said of Moss as a prospect. There are great highschool/college athletes, and then about 5 levels higher you have Randy Moss.

Had never seen that clip. Wow. His legs look almost fake. Thanks for posting.

Its crazy..to me whats more explosive is sidestepping the first guy who tries to get him and hurdling the second guy, and then he stiff arms the 3rd and burns the rest..lol, insane.

Frankly, it sounded more like it was foolish and lacking in prudent self-control rather than that it was deeply immoral. The threats sounded that bad.

But I read the story a while back, so I can't firmly defend that opinion.

It was a stupid, impulsive decision, but one that, at the end of day, was done by a 17 year old. Its funny with Moss how we keep on holding the altercation and his dismissals from ND and FSU over his head as evidence that he's whats wrong with sports. Those are his biggest transgressions and they both happened when he was basically still a kid, one 13 years ago, and the other 12. Now the reason why we keep on hearing about these incidents is because you need them to legitimately make people believe he's this prick, jerk, and basically bad person many think he was before coming to NE. Without those incidents you're left with calling his fake moon and the nudging of the meter maid as his biggest crimes against humanity. Yet, the assumption is always made, even on this forum, that there is/was more evidence against him besides those incidents. The media really did there job on Randy Moss.

i think in many if not most cases if some skinhead is writing provocative racist stuff that some guys will eventually get sick of it and take them on. it sounds like the racists were purposely provoking randy and his friends to me. not saying what randy did was right thing to do, but i am saying that for someone at his age in that circumstance it happens a lot. i think many players in the nfl would have done the same. maybe randy being the best athlete around felt it was his responsibility to get involved and defend the neighborhood from the skinhead bullies. i don't know for sure of course, but from what little i know that's what it sounds like to me. and i think it's unfortunate he lost his scholarship over the skinhead jerkoffs, in that sense they got what they wanted.

The media manipulates a player's image in any way they want. They constantly remind you that Moss comitted an alleged "racist crime" in highschool, but when was the last time you heard the story about Peyton Manning rubbing his a** on his teacher's face?

umm, never

Hello,

Shortly after the Patriots traded for Randy, John Tomase wrote an excellent article about this incident, Randy's life, and why he is who he is. The "racist crime" that Randy is accused of committing went something like this: Randy's pregnant, white girlfriend was being harassed by white racists. Randy and a friend later went after one of the harassers, and got into a fight. The racist ends up in the hospital, and Randy loses his scholarship to Notre Dame. If I remember correctly, after that, he was villified in the press (at the age of 17) because he was well known in the area as being a great athlete. I don't think he has been treated fairly by the press throughout most of his life since then.

I'll say the same thing I said about Kyle Eckel a few weeks ago:

Moss has done nothing, in my mind, that is unforgivable. Therefore, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and judge my decisions based on what he does while wearing the Flying Elvis. And that has far exceeded even my wildest expectations (I knew he could be good, but I didn't think NFL TD record good :) ).

And anyone who wants to criticize him now, IMO, is welcome to a nice hot cup of STFU. :rocker:

Edit: I just saw the video, and, damn, he looks like a friggin' gazelle loping across the savannah.

It's funny to think he was a great Basketball player, too. He could have played for the Celtics a few years back, but if I remember correctly decided one sport was enough.

They made racist comments about his girlfriend and threatened her (white girl and the mother of his children). immature but understandable. His friends beat them up but Randy did kick one of them.
