smelling salt.
Smelling salts are often used on athletes and boxers when they are knocked unconscious. They are also famously used by Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre before each game.
And Larry Bird. In the 85/86 season, somebody found the opened capsule of smelling salts under the Celts bench (road game) and reported it, trying to cause a clamor that the Celts were druggies. An outraged Bird declared, "I'll take drug test right now. Where's a cup?" He later went on about how the only "drug" the Celts took was beer.Takeo Spikes used to go nuts with them, too.

I get the joke, but actually I don't believe the players drank the champagne. During those championship celebrations in the lockerroom, plenty of champagne was being poured on everyone, but whenever they showed players actually drinking something, it was beer. In cans. Just one of a thousand reasons I loved those guys.Don't forget Champagne.

It's probably "SNUFF" which is finely ground up tobacco in powder form ...
you get a nicotine lift from it ... it goes right to your head quickly because it is absorbed through the linings of your nasal passage. I learned about it when I was younger through some Cape Verdean friends I have ... they love it. If you need a nicotine lift it does it without smoking.
It was actually most likely smelling salts. Players use it all the time in the NFL.
