pats look at bethel johnson during bye week

Johnson could be a good special teamer. Also a good guy to practice with when the team is getting ready for a wr with a lot of speed.

Not sure why would pick him up other then that. Prolly Beli's worst pick. Aside from Chad Bethal Johnson 2.0 (kidding)

what about Andrews...his injury...could that be why they are looking at him???

Stallworth might be cut but also gaffney is a FA next season. With brown retiring and jackson shown the door we might endup having 3 WR who actually caught a pass this year.

kelly washington played TE blocking in running plays when we were a bit thin at TE.

what i would like is keep moss,wes,gaffney/jag,rookie/jackson/kelly at WR.
remember thomas will be back was you can line him up in the slot a bit.

Funny how all the same people who keep calling Chad Jackson the second coming of Bethel Johnson are the ones thinking he will get cut to make way for ... drum roll please ... Bethel Johnson!

Jackson isn't going to be cut. He'll get his chance next year. This is about special teams. Anyone notice that Hobbs wasn't running back kicks last week? I wonder if he's banged up.

In any case, Johnson lost it as a special teams player after his rookie season. He just didn't have the shiftiness after he added weight. Just my opinion.

You have to admit though, on the rare occasion Bethel both caught the ball and got good blocking, could he run! I don't know if I ever saw someone run as fast as him in a football game.

That's true. What a specimen. Much like Castro, he was impossible to overthrow.

Johnson actually has three more receptions than Gaffney had this year... in his career: http://www.nfl.com/players/betheljohnson/profile?id=JOH068969

We should stop speculation on the WR corps and look at what a few posters have pointed out: this is a special teams player only who might help give the starting D a look at speedy receivers. If he makes the team, there's no WAY he's catching a pass in the playoffs. :snob:

THey should have kept Andre Davis. :D

Bethel is faster than a crap sandwich.

They are probably looking at him for kickoff coverage and as a return man.

It wouldn't hurt to have someone like that returning (as long as he can hold on to the ball)

And maybe if he was out there last week, that moron on the giants wouldn't have returned it for a td?

they are probably just looking to improve special teams. A kickreturn for a td in the playoffs would suck.

I see him as insurance in case fan favorite ironman Chad Jackson gets injured again.
They're peas in a pod, with Bethel being an upgrade at KR.

There must have been "one thing" that the coaches wished he would learn or get through his head. It seemed like they gave him enough time to prove himself while he was here. It seemed like there was he just did not "Get it". Like he did not drink the Kool aid or something. It is like they thought he had the stuff but he was missing the "it" factor.

Can somebody explain what I mean to myself?

It always seemed like Bethel was on the outs for attitude and/or intellectual reasons. That's why I'm most surprised. Although, to be fair if you watch the 2003 3GTG, Bethel's role was quite prevalent.

Belichick is letting Bethel eat his humble pie, and if Bethel wants to fight for a position on the team and prove he has matured mentally, Belichick might give him the opportunity with no strings attached this time.

Or not.

It is a no risk proposal. Dillon and Moss had well documented maturity issues. In Bethel's case, you can always cut a guy that you get for cheap. Or use him as camp fodder. Or better yet, just use him to replace Hobbs on special teams and we all would not need to hold our breath when Hobbs has the ball in his hands, hoping our CB doesn't blow out a knee.

Good for Bethel. One of the nicest Patriots I've met (I've only met 3, but still). Hope he gets another shot at camp next year.

I would like Bethel back returning kicks for some of the reasons you mention. It's nice to have a threat back there, and I don't think he was a fumbler.

Imagine if he did come back and won a ring for 3 games work!

My view bringing in Bethel is that Troy Brown is struggling, not that Chad Jackson is about to be cut. Even if you believe everything bad written on this forum about Chad, Bethel is at best an even swap in productivity, and attitude.

If Chad as a receiver were the problem wouldn't BB promote Bam from the PS?

Bringing Bethel in this season would be for punt and kick off returns. Anyone notice that after TB muffed the punt he was pulled and someone else (I forget who) returned the next one.

I love TB and everything that he has brought to the Patriots but after 16 year and coming off of knee surgery he may not have the wheels to play in the NFL right now. One thing everyone has to admit is that Bethel has All-pro speed.

Maybe they brought him in so CJ could have someone with broader based failed NFL experience to vent to about some of the BS coaching decisions they make here besides a message board poster...;)

Bethel hasn't been on the field in a year. He did have over a thousand yards of returns for Minnesota in 2006, but he didn't manage to break one. He didn't look nearly as fast on his way out of here as he did as a rookie. I remember Bill justifying his draft selection based on you can't coach speed. He had no idea that adage would work against Bethel.

The way I heard it was that Doug Williams was the only man who could overthrow the Ayotollah ... :D
