Should Pats Petition?

After the season, do you expect the Patriots to petition Roger Goodell to review and modify his penalty for video taping?

Many players have petitioned Goodell and Tagliabue, and in most cases the Penalty was reduced. With the precedents established, and on the books for the CAP infractions by the 49ers and Broncos, leading to a forfeit of a third round pick.

Do you think they will do so? Should they even do so?

If they did, might Goodell reduce the penalty toconform to precedent and give them their First Rounder back, and take a third, like precedent would suggest? Would he reduce the fine?

I think they should. It seems foolish to just bend over and take it w/o trying to put up a defense at all.

Nonetheless, I doubt they will.

No, I'm sure Kraft and BB want Spygate to go away. There's no need to reopen an old wound. Goodell's not going to give a first rounder back...That's just not going to happen.

If you get fined for going 70 in a 45 and the next day they change the speed limit to 70 do you get your money back?

While they are guilty of a rule infraction, have kinda thought all along that the tapes provided to the NFL by the Pats showed wide spread innapropriate use of camera's throughout the league.. that is why they destroyed them so quickly. Cannot wait until the day comes when we hear their side of the story.. there is more to this than we know.

Goodell has backed himself into a corner in his rush to judgement, and cannot reverse himself as he will be viewed as weak on the coaches/owners..

Doesn't seem likely that any appeal they could muster would have solid footing because the evidence has all been destroyed, it would be a matter of arguing over the validity of his interpretation. As we know from internet boards, people don't often just straight up admit they were wrong unless there is at least some irrefutable evidence that proves they were wrong.

Yup, and they were punished for said rule infraction. You're right that Goodell has put himself into a corner on this - if it happens with another team he'll have no choice but to come down, but if you think about it, anything he could have done would have set some precedent and "backed him into a corner". The punishment was harsh, but I don't see anything unfrair about it. Obviously other teams do it, but we got caught, and the punishment is the penalty for getting caught.

I always felt that Goodell's lack of experience showed itself in his handling of the Patriots. I think he errored and the Patriots have grounds to challenge his ruling.

His punishment was a 2nd & 3rd rounder if we missed the playoffs or a 1st rounder if we made them. How is that appropriate? How can he base the punishment on whether the Patriots make or miss the playoffs. The crime should have a punishment completely independent of whether the offending team makes the playoffs or not.

It almost felt like we were being punished for being good, instead of being punished for the crime.

I'd love to see Belichick and Kraft challenge this when the season is over. I can understand why they didn't address this issue during the season. Controvercies cause distraction and it was important for them to spend their time on preparing for their next opponent, instead of dealing with this nonsense.But when the season ends, it's a different story... If the Patriots ever address spygate, it'll be after the season.

How awesome would it be to get that first round pick back and lose our 2nd and 3rd rounders instead.

Huh? Are you aware of anything in the league constitution or bylaws that prohibits a conditional punishment? Your sense of moral outrage isn't going to cut it. The punishment is eithr "allowed" or it's "not allowed", and I'm sure league lawyers made sure it was the former. Where exactly would they challenge his ruling?

I went to a Colts one ..yuk...a broncos and steelers one. The steelers one was alright but everyone kept calling everyone a "troll".. whatever the hell that is..

exactly why in the world would belichick or the patriots want to go through that? it's over. all we can do is speculate on what was on those tapes and why goodell destroyed them: patriot haters claim it's proof that we cheated like bandits for years; patriot lovers like myself believe that the tapes contained proof that other teams were taping the patriots.

"Troll" comes from Usenet, it's a poster who posts something with the intent of drawing a lot of flames (a flame is an attack post).

Going to a Colts messageboard and posting something about Peyton's large forehead might get one a troll designation.
