Despite our offensive line playing well this year, I would still love to see Alan Faneca playing on our line next year.

Faneca is gone from Pitt in 2008 and he will be a highly sought free agent and the Jets appear to be the front runner for his services.

I think it would be awesome to sign him out from under the Jets and stick it to Mangini once again.

Logan Mankins has been superb at the spot Faneca also mans and I wonder if Logan could make a switch to Right Guard if Faneca is of some interest in New England.

Stephen Neal is decent but could you imagine Faneca on one side of Koppen and Mankins on the other?

I guess its not possible but with BB one never knows.

I do know if it happened,Brady could bring a lunchbox and have lunch in the pocket because thats how much time he would have next year.

If I wanted to upgrade the OL I'd look to drafting a top LT, not signing the excellent yet pricey Faneca. The Pats cap money will go to (1) re-signing guys like Moss (2) a {vain I believe} attempt to re-sign Asante or pay his FA replacement and (3) FAs on defense. A young LT with 1 year to develop would help ensure Brady's career with Light moving to RT.

signing a big money guard who is 31 and past his peak = a mistake the Pats never make.

they dont pay big bucks for what you have done in the past. thank god some other team will

IMO Faneca will command top dollar on the FA market. I'd rather concentrate on a $$ extension for Mankins.

Co-sign. I said this in another thread recently, seems to be a perfect way to go. Use a Day 1 pick, maybe even 1st round, draft a stud tackle, play him on the right for now, upgrade the rightside in the process, and then have him move over to the left when Light is no longer suited to play there.

I'm with you - particularly in a year where we draft near the top. Not to mention you don't screw around with a Pro Bowl LG. If there is a weak link apart from mountain mans inconsistency, it's Kaczur. Upgrade at LT or upgrade at RG and do it via the draft. Ditto CB. Spend your money on proven commodities like Moss AND Stallworth and perhaps retaining Gaffney on a reasonable deal. Get Rosie extended and look for another Seau to plug in the middle. Faneca has his ring - all he wants is his money. Let Mangini pay him that while he continues to play musical chairs at QB...

And please remember what Pioli reminds us annually - you can't have top 5 players at every positions and you can only afford to have so many of them on the roster at any given time period.

Exactamundo. ;)

I agree with everything except the "AND Stallworth". Gaffney may not be as explosive with the ball, but he's probably played as many if not more snaps than Stallworth in the second half of the season. Stallworth is gone, Gaffney and Chad Jackson are more than suitable to replace him.

Which frees up $$ to address other more pressing needs, which in turn allows you to draft a stud tackle as been proposed, and upgrade the OL and protect Brady's future in the process.

There isn't really a top LT, though. Clady and Long both have holes in their games and Cherilus is overrated.

Cites KC as a "no-brainer" fit for Long for anyway. Of course, when are mocks ever right and when are "no-brainers" ever really such. I've seen mocks with him going higher anyway, haven't seen one with him reaching #7.

I agree with everyone about not signing Faneca. However, I would love to have him on the Patriots but at this point in his career, it's not worth the money. He is going to command too much money and the Patriots will have their problems re-signing their own players. I would rather draft young, cheap lineman on day 1. With that said, I would rather put my money on a young tackle like Jake Long and build around him,

I hope Stallworth surprises us all and takes a pay cut to stay. From what I have seen from Stallworth in interviews on "Rome is Burning" and NFL Network, he carries himself extremelly well. Stallworth seems like a guy you want to have in your locker room.

I think Stallworth has been a little dinged up. He is way more explosive and a lot more capable of filling the #1 WR role if anything happened to Moss - who turns 31 next week and was a little chippy in his PC this week.... I think he sees a lot more balls in the playoffs. I'm not sure Jackson is suitable to replace anyone, including on ST. Gaffney isn't resigned, and that he wasn't is a head scratcher of sorts. CJ is half way through his rookie deal. Stallworth is 26 and locked up through 2012.

Why move a probowl LG to RG? We are fine at RG with Neal, Yates or Hochstein.

We can keep on drafting and cutting 5th round OT's if we wish. Kaycur, O'Callaghan and Britt are fine with me. In the end, I am also fine with draft an OT early.

Finally, what a waste of money! There are many, many better uses of player money. We should extend Colvin, sign Gay, and sign Wilson. We could extend Wright and Wilfork. We could sign Moss. We could bring in a free agent LB or CB. You would paid a lot to updgrade Neal with Faneca.

This is a really bad idea.

I may alter my sig to state a disclaimer that I know nothing about college football players and the draft class.

Haha, fair enough. I was high on Long until I actually saw him play. He's huge, a tree trunk... but he doesn't move very well. I think he'll get pounded on by speed rushers, which is our LT's problem to begin with. I like Clady better, but at #7, it's not a value pick. If Cherilus lasts until round 2, I'd take him... but I think he's overrated because of the strength of BC's interior line. The interior linemen make the tackles look better than they actually are, something that BC has in common with the Patriots.

How is Cherilus over-rated? I have seen him as a 2nd round pick and seen statements saying that he could develop into an elite LT. NOT that he is one ALREADY.

Let's put it this way... I've seen the guy play. Alot. If he's available late in the 2nd round, great, he has plenty of potential. If someone takes him deep in the 1st, it's a reach. Like I said, BC's interior line makes him look better than he is. If Light frustrates you, Cherilus will have you ripping your hair out. False starts, holds... gets beat far more often than he should.

Ok. So you watch BC play. Got it.

As for LIGHT, he's never frustrated me. Why? Well, I'm biased because I actually had Light as my 2nd round pick for the Pats back in 2001. Yes, there are times I wish he'd play more consistently, but he's been playing very well the last couple of years.

As for Cherlius, he may not be Pats material. That's ok. He'll probably be a player that his interview will decide whether the Pats have him on their board.
