everyone talks about the roughing the passer call. it was a bad call, but there were many bad calls or non calls in that game. i was there and the pats were obviously the better more skilled team, though young. the raiders, especially vilapiano, weren't going to let the pats come into their house and beat them in the playoffs without at least pushing the envelope with cheapshots. remember this was the height of the big bad raiders and their "just win baby" mentality. i still shake my head over that game.

You're lucky (depending on how you look at it). I tried to get tickets, but they ran out just as I got within a Brady to Faulk screen pass distance to the ticket window. I watched it on TV, and I do recall Villapiano doing his thing as he always did. Of course, Hendricks, Sistrunk and the hated Jack Tatum were on that team also. Worst Patriots outcome, well, up there with last year's AFCCG, ever. Probably the worst come to think of it, since we still had the 3 SB titles to fall back on after last year's debacle.

Ray "Sugar Bear" Hamilton (born January 20, 1951) is a former American football player from 1973 through 1981 for the New England Patriots, and the current defensive line coach for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hamilton is best known for an incident in the 1976 NFL playoffs in a first-round game against the Oakland Raiders, when Oakland's Ken Stabler threw an incompletion and was hit by Hamilton as he threw. Ben Dreith, the referee, gave the Raiders a first down on a penalty of roughing the passer. Replays showed Dreith's call was wrong, but Oakland took advantage of the call to win in the final minutes.

It took twenty five years to get to "what goes around, comes around".
Oakland has not one gripe about any tuck rule..........By the way, why isn't a penalty on Woodson called on "the play". He hit Brady in the head and it was never called. Look at the replay. Much more of a hit than Hamilton on Stabler. That might have been a more fitting "tit for tat" Sugar Bear vengeance call, although he did smack his Michigan team mate.

I have always felt that the tuck play was simply karma.

As far as that game, the Raiders soaked down the field with water for a week before the game started so as to slow the Pats attack.

The ref did such a one sided job from beginning to end that he never officated another game again.

I too would love to see this play. My father has told me about it probably 50 times over the years, each time getting just as pissed off as when it happened. The funny thing is, he now lives just outside Oakland and the people out there are just as upset about the "tuck game" as he is about the roughing call on Hamilton.

The Pats thumped the Raiders earlier in the season, 48-17. And after beating the Pats on a bad call, the Raiders easily beat the Steelers and then the Vikings. The '76 Pats, no doubt, would have done the same. Made Dreith's call even harder to take.

Being it was the nation's 200th birthday, I had thought '76 was the year for the Patriots. Made the tuck call all the sweeter.

well, my brother and i were both lucky. my aunt and uncle had season tickets because they were huge raider fans. so when the pats came out to oakland for the playoffs my aunt and cousin stayed home and my uncle took us. we were thrilled. my dumbass brother kept teasing all the raider fans in our section because we were kicking their butt for three quarters. i kept telling him to shut up and don't jinx us. real raider fans are some of the best football fans going and they just shrugged him off. when the game was over, i nearly strangled my brother.
