Parcells needs a GM. Is his Son-In-Law interested??

forgive me if this has been posted before. I heard Peter King say last week that there will soon be an issue about one team trying to keep another team from tampering with its GM. Scott Pioli has long been rumored to someday want to take on a GM role by himself. If he gets his 4th title here, after a 19-0 season, could the lure from Father-In-Law Parcells interest him enough for him to jump to Miami?

Talk about continuing the Parcells/Belichick soap opera in the AFC East?

personally, I dread the day Pioli leaves. Along with Belichick and Brady, he is one of the 3 indispensible parts of this dynasty. A 4th round pick in his hands is worth more than a 1st with most teams.

Since I am not a member of that family, I am going to try very hard to not speak as though I am, but I have read several times that those two have not always been on good terms. However, it does seem like Parcells has been rehashing up old friendships and making wrong, right lately.

Me personally? I would hate to work for my in-laws, and they are wonderful ppl. But work mixed with personal life, too much and too often, will suck you dry. With the best hopes of a great Pioloi future in mind, I hope he doesnt even consider it.

All I can remember is when the Pats played Dallas a few years back. Pioli & his wife Dallas (Parcells' daughter) had had their first child about 9 mos. before. Not only had Parcells never seen the kid, but he wasn't sure if he would have enough time to see her when he was in town for the game. That was all I needed to know about how close these folks were.

This anecdote, plus Pioli's and BB's own prior personal experiences tell me this is a "no go" , merely an unsubstantiated rumor drummed up by the media, based on the "family" connection and nothing more.

Why would Scott Pioli, who bolted NY with BB in order to avoid "working for" Parcells in his ivory tower, now go to Miami to do the very same thing? Doesn't make any sense.

I don't think Pioli would go to Miami. I mean you would think that he would maybe want a change after being here so long and being so sucessful, but I hope that day doesnt come. It would be hard to imagine life without Scott, many people dont realize what he does for us.

I cannot see Pioli working under his father-in-law again. Remember they had worked with each other when both were with the Jets, so they know what experience that relationship would be like.

Besides, joining Parcells again (and going to a division rival to boot) means Scott is stabbing BB in the back IMO. For sure he doesn't want to do that.

Why would Pioli pass on opportunities to be GM of better teams in previous seasons, as he was rumored, to go try to be GM of a team with an aging defense, nothing but Ronnie Brown on offense and be every bit if not moreso in the shadow of Parcells than he is here working with Belichick?

Maybe Pioli takes a job somewhere this year but the Dolphins? No way.

I'm curious where this rumor might have come from. The only thing I've ever heard Pioli say is that he wants to stay here long-term because he thinks they are building something special. He has turned down high-dollar offers from other teams in the past (Seattle) and said he wants to stay here.

Pioli's legacy is pretty comfortable in NE. He is still a young guy, and will probably remain in NE when Belichick retires some day. I'm not sure why people wonder why he doesn't want to leave.

leaving aside the family dynamics, which we just don't know anything about, why would any truly successful nfl gm/personnel director with his own track record want to work under the thumb of Bill Parcells?

pioli, acting with belichick, is essentially his own man and i get the impression the they both accord each other a lot of respect in the personnel decision process. why in the world would he give that up to work at the direction of bill parcells who clearly has an idea of what he wants to do and a track record that justifies his control?

i think parcells will bring in a scout or assistant gm-type with whom he has experience as the new dolphins gm (i.e., someone he knows he can work with and he knows he will be able to control).

A good rule of thumb in starting posts like this about Pioli leaving rumors is to assume it's been posted a hundred times. Not to mention a half dozen times since Tuna was spotted in Atlanta or Miami and more than once since Peter King mentioned the word GM last week. It's not Pioli they are talking about. And he's not a GM anyway. Nobody is buying the hands off scenario Bill is trying to paint in Miami. He can't fill his "GM" position absent compensation without creating that illusion. His target is likely Ireland, the Dallas Cowboys personnel guy who Tuna brought in and promoted there. Jerry is prepared to fight him on the basis of you're not kidding anyone. They likely also fear their OC will be offered the HC of the Miami Dolphins job, and he is their fallback if son of a Bum Phillips doesn't manage to get this 'Boys team to Arizona in February.

Pioli has turned down a lot more appealing deals over the last couple of seasons with legitimate total football operations control and mega salaries. He and Dallas have reportedly patched up their family differences with Tuna, much as BB and he have. That said, people here don't seem to know much about Scotts football roots. He and BB didn't meet on Parcells staff. He was a Belichick guy even before he graduated college, not a Parcells protoge, a curious college kid Bill took an interest in when someone introduced them at Giants TC one year. He was never on a Parcells staff until Belichick requested he be hired in NY in 1997. His first pro job was as a BB gopher in Cleveland in 1993, and when Bill got the axe he went to Baltimore for a year until BB got him in to the JETS FO. He may have married the Tuna's daughter, but he followed his mentor to NE - with no fight from Pops.

You know what they say about friends vs. relatives, you can choose one but get stuck with the other. If he ever were to leave here, I think the last place he would go is an AFCE team. Why try to compete directly against something you are widely credited with helping to build.

FINS INTERVIEW JETS EXEC

The Miami Dolphins have interviewed Jets director of college scouting Joey Clinkscales, apparently for the position of General Manager.

However, the Fins are widely expected to hire Cowboys V.P. of pro and college scouting Jeff Ireland to fill that role. It could be that Clinkscales is under consideration for another position with the team. But if that's the case the Jets could have blocked the interview.

Also, the Cowboys have already given permission for Parcells to speak with Jeff Ireland.

COWBOYS PERMIT TUNA TO INTERVIEW IRELAND

Though some league insiders believed that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would fight, Jones in the end opted not to.

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the Cowboys have given the Dolphins permission to interview V.P. of college and pro scouting Jeff Ireland.

Per Glazer, Fins football poobah Bill Parcells is expected to offer the G.M. job to Ireland, and Ireland is expected to accept it.

I have YET to hear anywhere that Parcells is interested in Pioli.

His daughter, Katie, attended Boston College.

Hmmm - a chance to work for your father-in-law in a job where everyone assumes he's making all the calls and you're little more than a puppet!

I think this is one of those idle rumors that usually crop sometime in May, I think that Pioli is well taken care of by Mr. Kraft as are many of the upper echelon staff. Here Pioli, can take a lot of credit and is a winner, somewhere else if he messes up he will be yesterday's headline.. Parcell is trying to rebuild, and if Pioli were to follow him and make a couple of bad draft picks all the good he accomplished here would be forgotten yesterday.

If something here he does wrong, BB takes a lot of the responsibility.. do not see him going anywhere.

At what point do people start to believe the words that come out of Pioli's mouth? He's said categorically that he is happy in New England and wants to stay. Others can't seem to accept the idea that a guy might be thrilled to be part of building such a great team.

I suspect Parcells would not view his role with Pioli as that of equals in team decisions, which I suspect is why Belichick would not stay with the Jets and why Pioli did not land in Dallas. My guess is Pioli stays as long as Belichick stays. He has had opportunities to fly if he wanted to leave, and most teams would accept his terms with his track record .
