Re: Great Read

" the surviving members of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, who decided years ago to break the world record for being publicly grumpy old farts, a mark previously held jointly by the McLaughlin Group and any show Louis Rukeyser hosted alone. Bob Kuechenberg's opinion has been almost universally unsought for more than three decades, and the last person who truly cared what Mercury Morris said about anything was a judge. "

Sometimes I don't like Charlie, but he can really write.

Re: Great Read

Thanks for posting it. Nice read. Very well written, especially the observation on Mercury Morris. :)

Yeah, how about that link? I've assumed Morris was on coke, but I never realized he (allegedly) dealt the stuff 25 years ago.

edit: nice first post, btw!

"The league had been knuckled by some suddenly lifelike Democratic congresscritters into making the game generally available on television, instead of restricting it to the NFL Network, as was originally planned. Keeping a completely straight face, and listening intently to hear a **** crow, Goodell said that the decision was all about "the fans," and that it had nothing to do with the ongoing wrangle between the league and America's cable-television providers. Goodell then handed us off to what amounted to a five-hour infomercial for the NFL Network. (Poor Bryant Gumbel was lucky he wasn't wearing decals, like a stock car.) This is the ethical context in which Belichick and the Patriots got caught cheating. Forgive me if my outrage died some time before Thanksgiving".

Hahahahahaha, funny stuff. Great read

Very witty stuff, but his idea of the FO is a little off-base.

It's not the case (thank God!) that any team could have had Moss. He wanted the Patriots, and we wanted him. Yes, any team that got him could have got the "discount" from the 10M due from the Raiders. But we had right of first refusal, if Moss is to be believed.

It's not the case that any team could have seen the value of Wes Welker. People scratched their heads when we gave up a 2 and a 5 for him.

But that's picking nits; obviously this guy is approaching the very broad brush feel of this season, and he did a good job.

The Moss thing is true (Moss said he only wanted to come here) but I think what he meant re: Welker is that any team could have seen the value, but they don't have the smart FO we do, so they didn't. But Welker's performances were out there for all to see....we were the ones who were smart enough to go out and do what it took to get him.

I promised myself never to use or talk about the S word (Spygate), but what he said about it was pretty funny.

Exactly. There were a lot of folks even here who didn't see Welker for a second rounder either. The just a slot receiver crowd. Belichick sees not only the player, he sees the player in this system.

And his point on the Moss thing is correct too. We were clearly his first choice because in his heart of hearts he knew what Brady could do for him - meet him more than half way. But more than anything he wanted OUT of Oakland. So yeah, other teams could have made a deal for a 4th round draft pick and discounted salary. They just couldn't trust themselves to make it work so they passed and predicted a potential costly miscalculation on BB's part.

Here, we could trust - although many here and in the media still don't fully embrace that concept... This was likely the only team in the league for which it was a no risk proposition because we largely eschewed that draft, had already filled our glaring holes via FA, we had already sufficiently upgraded the receiving corps, and the players would have backed BB in lockstep had Randy not bought all in (which is one reason a player like that does). We also have a genius HC who is secure enough to appreciate smart players enough to fully empower them to achieve their potential.

Many HC's are insecure or ego driven to the point they can't. The you play, I'll coach snydrome. BB is learning as much from Randy as Randy is from him, and yet the coach remains in control of all situations. That's a facet of BB that the media whiffs on because they attribute his attitude towards them to something other than what it is - a product of their own ineptitude, and they assume that's who he is. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The extent to which his players have his back is proof positive of that. He simply hasn't got the time or inclination to suffer fools.

That is what the naysayers from within and without really need to learn to deal with. Drinking koolaid doesn't make you a sap, it enlightens you and allows for pure enjoyment from a fans perspective. Rail against it under the guise of objectivity, and you end up a miserable fool.

You cannot be serious that doing or selling drugs is news in America.

This entire country is drugged to hell and back fifty times over. Who really cares what a guy's drug of choice is? Puritan America.

LOL, it may not be news to you, O Jaded One, but selling drugs is still kinda a big deal, at least according to mainstream America. That's why it's not considered "good" when a major athlete or celebrity is caught using or dealing.

It's these kind of well-written articles from someone other than the locals that helps me appreciate even more about what is going on this season. Perhaps the greatest team ever assembled in football history. Unbelievable.

Great article. Thanks
