I have avoided commenting on the 72 Dolphins for various reasons. The first and most important being that until Saturday night the Pats hadn't gone undefeated in the regular, and almost as important is that Morris and his kind general don't desreve my attention, but I just saw Mercury Morris on ESPN and his statements have inspired me to state the following:

What a pathetic and petty human being. Rather than be gracious and show respect for the accomplishments of others he continues to dwell on the "they can only match us" mantra.

I believe that the Dolphins players and coaches that continue to hold so desperately onto their "undefeated legacy" or the "Patriots season tainted by Spygate mantra" and refuse to acknowledge the accomplishment of other teams are hurting that legacy by being such poor sportsmen.

Aside from trying to propel themselves into the spotlight with their champagne toasts, every year when a team is 9-0 and the conversation about an undefeated season begins every year, what have Mercury Morris et al. done recently.

Not all of the 72 Dolphins are so ungracious and I do not want to paint them with the same brush as I do Morris and Shula.

I desperately hope the Pats win the SB and petty, self centered human beings like Morris will never again receive the undeserved attention of the mass media. </rant>

Please feel free to merge this post with any of the other Mercury Morris or 72 Dolphins threads. A sticky 72 Dolphins Rant thread might be a good idea :)

You poor thing. It must be that time of the month. Take some Midol.

One of the things about football players is that they are competitive in the extreme. Tom Brady will destroy his sister in dominoes if he gets a chance. They are not gracious when it comes to competition. In Morris' case he's still competing. He's like a pit bull. You look at a pit bull attack and you think, "Geezuz, what was that all about?" but that is the nature of certain pit bulls. They are what they are. You cannot know why they do that unless you study their breeding and training.

Sure, it's small of Morris, but the point of beating people up every week isn't to be gracious. That's for the coaches and the media and the owners to handle. The players are bred to attack.

Morris has said some very complimentary things about the Pats too. I don't think it's all one way. Kuchinberg was right, said Tedy the other night. They are absolutely right that the trip is not complete for this team. It may irk us, but it's nothing but the truth. The truth shall set you free (either that or drive you insane as you try to fight it.)

I respect you point of view and, I understand being competitive, trust me I have a competitive nature myself, but being competitive does not excuse what I view as the attempts of Morris and others to live in the past.

I am not aware of the pro-Patriots comments that you mention. Do you have links? I will gladly edit most post to reflect them, but I haven't read or seen or heard them.

Shula should have redeemed himself by refusing to be interviewed on Saturday, and saying it was the Patriots’ day. We’ve heard enough out of him and Morris. Instead he was on TV all day long.

I agree. I have seen many professional athletes who are more than gracious when their records have been broken, or tied. In fact, it's more the rule than the exception, for those whose records are broken to congratulate those who overtake them.

Mercury Morris, to those who resent him, is a petty, bitter old loser. He is only making himself look bad. When this is all over he will return to the obscurity of the distant past and live out his life unhappily (because it is obvious that he is unhappy). Don't hate him; pity him.

I agree, because most players know that when you play in any sport, you know any and all records can be broken, matched or at the minimum challenged. Good sportsmanship allows for and respects record-breaking, because it never takes away from the accomplishments of the previous record holder.

Morris, Shula, the rest of the bitter 72 team, even Rice, although the latter not entirely in the same league as the former 3, their comments re: the 07 Patriot records, kinda sad.

Seriously, I honestly do feel sorry for them. Just congratulate them and move on boys.

Ultimately it is the media in the U.S. who is the culprit here. They are a powerful machine that have yet to be stopped. They are all over this, like everything else, provoking the affected parties. They are the ones that make me the most sick.

Someone has a comment and sentiment that may be taken out of context or said to some degree as half joking/half serious. Once this happens the interviewees continue to spew the crap they say many interviews after instead of just saying, 'dude, relax this is how i sorta feel but no need to get all crazy'...and that is exactly what the media does, takes it and runs with it for all it's worth. Can you possibly imagine what ESPN will do if the Colts meet the Patriots again this year. They beat the story bloody.

In the end, I wish that is what Morris and Shula and the other clowns would have said. 'It was kinda fun being alone at the top and we are to some degree disappointed to be joined, but life goes on, they have a great team and in the end we are both undefeated (should NE go undefeated). We wecome them to the view up here'. That is all they have to say.

...but they don't, the media keeps poking at them, and this is the result.

pathetic.

I might if he wasn't a convicted cocaine trafficker. For that reason, as far as I'm concerned, he's a piece of garbage. Hardly worth my hate or pity.

Edit: Yay not a rookie anymore :)

There was one thing I found funny in the interview. He was talking about how it doesn't matter that the patriots will be 19-0, rather than 17-0 and it doesn't make them any better. He then went on to say, "Its not about the number of games you won, its about the number of game you didn't lose"

I was just thinking to myself. Okay Mercury, if the Pats go 19-0, they didn't lose 19 games, whereas you guys only didn't lose 17. Pats are better.

I really hope the Pats go 19-0 and I really can't wait to see his reaction. I know its going to be priceless.

would the 72 dolphins stand a chance against any nfl teams today on the field?

their offensive line averaged about 250 pounds... there are girls that weigh more nowadays
