Cost/Risk of #7 Rookie, e.g. Malcolm Jenkins vs Asante Samuel

I'm just curious... how do the costs/risks compare on these two?

My Wildassguess...

#7 Rookie like Jenkins would be something like $40 over 6 years with maybe $15M Guaranteed?

Samuel would be something like $14M Signing Bonus +$5M/year on a backloaded 6 year $60M contract? So an extra $1-2M on the cap in the first couple years and $19M guaranteed?

Well, to answer that, we need to ask whether CB is a need...

Hmm, I wonder if CB will be a need... I guess that depends whether we re-sign Asante...

The question of whether we would go after Malcolm Jenkins, or any other prospect, is a cost-risk-benefit analysis... at least in my mind.

So that's why I asked the question.

I think Geek has a valid point.
If we look at it as an either/or situation, then for about the same money you could have the #7 pick or Samuel,which would you pick?
The #7 pick will sign for 5 or 6 years so you can spread the bonus out. Would BB sign Samuel for 6 years? I'm not sure he would/could/should go there with Samuel.

Sadly, I don't think that will be enough to resign Samuel.

From what I've heard, this draft is supposedly deep at CB, and there may be little difference in talent between a CB taken in round 1 and round 3 or 4.

I can't believe the NFLPA hasn't had some sort of rookie wage scale put in like MLB or the NBA. Let em get a bonus. But, the salaries are insane for unproven talent. There's a reason it's so hard for poor teams to improve. And, that's one of them. The draft would be fantastic if it wasn't for that. High picks would be at a premium. You could get a veterar or two if a team fell in love with a certain player without the worry of having to pay for him if he failed. I think you'd see a lot more trades.

samuels salary demands are based on his play history that benefit the patriots.

jenkins demands are based on draft slot #7 being paid on average $X.

Jenkins does not have the NFL play history to step into asante's role right away. That is why it is irrelevant to the draft.

If asante was a first year db or a 2nd year practice squad db then I can see why Pioli would see value in either releasing the 2nd year db or extending him especially if the draft pool has no one available, so now the draft becomes relevant.

Malcolm Jenkins, like all other OSU corners that have come into this league will be a flat out stud. He will start from day one.

Now here's a question. Even if the Pats sign A$ante, I would not put it past them to still draft Jenkins and move Ellis to nickel. BB always looks to upgrade his secondary, that's his thing, I could still see him taking Jenkins. And I would have no problem with this. Jenkins will be a lock down corner real soon in this league.

If the Pats lose Asante, it's going to take a lot more than a rookie

cornerback to improve their defensive backfield for 2008. Asante

has proven this year that he is not a flash in the pan.

If my guesses are close, it looks to me like for the first few years the difference between paying a rookie and paying Asante is a few mil.

However, IF the rookie turns out to be as good or better, you come out way ahead in years 3-6... The salary cap numbers won't balloon and the contract will be longer.

BTW, sorry to be dense, but would we get a comp pick for Asante if he were to walk next year?
