Who Is Our Best Offensive Lineman?

To be fair, of the three positions, the guard usually has the easiest job.

Not true. If you read a Belichick interview from a few months ago, he talks about how the guard must be the most versatile offensive lineman.

On one play he might take a huge nose tackle, another play he'll take a quick DE. Also, guards have to pull a lot and have speed, or sometimes get to the second level. It requires a lot of talent.

Mankins is our best, then Light, then Koppen.

Mankins is the best. Personally I think Light is overrated. We need a real left tackle and to move him over to right tackle.

form me:
Mankins, Koppen (underated througout the league) and neal (who has made himself into a good player)

Mankins was the first name that came to mind for me when I read the title of this thread. Here is how I rank them:

  1. Logan Mankins
  2. Dan Koppen
  3. Matt Light
  4. Stephen Neal
  5. Russ Hochstein
  6. Nick Kaczur
  7. Ryan O'Callaghan
  8. Billy Yates
  9. Wesley Britt

Mankins, period.

Belichick has also been of the philosophy that guards are the easiest offensive personnel to find, and should be paid the cheapest. Maybe versatility is more common to guards than specialty?

Irrespective of what Belichick and Scar ask the lineman to do, details no-one here is privy to, I am merely commenting in general on their situation. They are on the interior of the line, so their space responsibilities are reduced over those of tackles. They also do not need to make the line calls of the center.

Check out this clip of Mankins obliterating a Chargers lineman. You'll see it on the lower right side of your screen. This was on their 2-point conversion in the playoffs where Kevin Faulk scored to tie the game.

I like Mankins because he has a nasty streak.

Check it out ... they grak it down by position also. Every time I post these charts I mess them up ... so here .. we are #1 btw.

BY Position: by the numbers anyways. For me it's Mankins
but I think the world of Neal ... he's a load.

LT - 5.1 rank of #5
G/C - 4.9 rank of #2
RT - 4.5 rank #11

Mankins without a doubt. I love the fact that this guy actually literally plays till the whistle. I get so giddy when I see him pile driving a defender till whistle is blown(or even after).

Most talented would be Mankins imo. And he just keeps getting better.
Koppen is solid.
Light is solid but he can get beaten pretty badly by elite pass rushers.
I'd say RT is the Pats weakest position, not gonna point any particular fingers.

Positions that depend heavily on play recognition and/or doing a lot of things pretty well -- like guard, fullback, ILB, or safety -- tend to come cheaper than those that rely on physical freaks.

Mankins can easily be the best player on the OL without being the one deserving of the highest salary.

That said, formerly cheap positions -- like TE, S, and G -- are getting a lot more expense than they used to be. Just think of Daniel Graham, Bob Sanders, or Eric Steinbach.
