Strength of Schedule: 07 Patriots vs 72 Dolphins

I'm a long time lurker and finally decided to post.

I'm tired of

a) people suggesting that the Patriots went 16-0 and had an easy schedule.
b) and those 72 Dolphins (read Mercury Morris) beaking off about how we could be in the neighborhood.

Even though we got a bit more to go to get our 4th SB in 7 years, I thought I'd check it out the 72 Dolphins strength of schedule vs ours. So...in 1972 - the Dolphins opposition went 70-122 for a 0.367. With the Indy-Tenn game to be played yet us, (even with a weak AFC East Division) strength of schedule can be no worse than 0.519 (108-100).

If we do run the table (and we will), why should the 72 Dolphins be considered the greatest team ever?

welcome to the board. nice to see a newbie put up some data. you could have added that the 72 fins only played two regular season games against teams with a record above .500 (both were 8--6) and that they didn't play anyone who made the playoffs. by my count, the pats beat six teams who are in this years playoffs (colts, steelers, chargers, boys, giants, skins),

nonetheless, i don't think this takes away from the 17-0. as buoniconti said yesterday, the pressure builds with every game in the playoffs once you go undefeated in the regular season. they won those three games. we have them ahead of us.

Nice post! The Patriots went 16 - 0 in the regular season, and if Cleveland is the final playoff team, the Patriiots will have beaten 7 playoff teams. This of course includes the NFC's 1 seed @ Dallas, and the AFC's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds. It's hard to argue anymore that this was not a tough schedule. Oh, and they won by a greater combined margin than in HISTORY!

No need to bang on the old Dolphins. They won all their games under pressure. But to this point, NE has already beaten 6 playoff teams, and most of them by wide margins. And if Cleveland gets in, they would be the 7th. Anyone with half a brain understands going undefeated with 6 or 7 playoff teams on the slate is no easy road. If you hear some knucklehead somewhere say NE had it easy, just share that knowledge with them. It'll shut 'em up in a second. Because no other team has done it.

Good work and nice first post. I also looked back at 1972 and on Miami's schedule was a team even worse than New England that year, the 1 - 13 Houston Oilers. If, no, when the Patriots finish 19 - 0, there can be no doubt that our team will be declared better than those Dolphins, and also the best ever. Odd that this year, Miami needed a missed very makeable field goal by Baltimore in OT to prevent going 0 - 16. Good luck Tuna.

IDK if you guys have been watching espn but Bill Parcells gave the Pats some up lifting by sayin the 72 Phins couldnt beat the Pats...He also said that the only team that would really stand a shot is the 85 Bears..You guys thoughts bout those bears?

Thye players are so much biogger and faster today, I suspect many teams today would beat the 85 Bears, and even weak teams today would beat the 72 Fins. In th early 1980s, the Redskins had two linemen over 300 pounds and that was considered huge.

Not a knock on these earlier teams, but the bodies have changed so much.

hmm, change that to 7 teams if the browns make it
