Moss Re-sign Pessimism Generator

90% of me says, he likes winning. He wants to stay in NE. NE wants him back. BB recognizes and has always recognized the value of a game-changing player, and Moss is exactly that.

That said, did anybody else get the same reaction as the 10% pessimist in me when Moss spoke his mind a little last night?

Here's where 10% pessimist PFnV (or 10%pPFnV) is getting this:

Moss emphasized shutting up the media about... Moss. Now he has every right to go there, especially given the load of crap that was said and written about Moss. Then he explained how he did his homework about the Pats, etc. Then there was his anger about how the media had written him off, and he pretty much showed them all. Not his words, but that's pretty much the content.

So, 10%pPFnV thought: you know what? This narrative sounds an awful lot like a smart man, who thought through options to reinvigorate his career, and took the best path to doing so.

So: Moss' presser was consistent with a) exactly what I want him to be (that is, in love with playing with a class organization with winning ways,) but also with b) something that strikes fear in my heart, the guy looking for the highest bidder next year.

Let me say up front, he's going to be a fantastic asset through the playoffs/super bowl, I have no doubt. Even 10%pPFnV doesn't think he'll turn into Bad Randy while the season's being played. I just want Randy with the Pats throughout his career, myself. But it's in his power to "show them all" again when the offers come in this offseason too. I am hoping that neither Randy nor the team goes off the rails enough for this match made in heaven to be pulled apart, and that's what I think will happen...

But something about last night made me go "aw crap, here we go..."

Anybody else get a 10%p chill when Randy was speaking last night?

I second the I'm not incredibly concerned if he would try to spurn us I have no doubt he would be slapped with the franchise tag and traded to Atlanta quicker then his head could spin.

Of course this will not happen and Randy will sign a contract around 5, 6 mill a year and rewrite history with us.

Here's my theory for what it's worth.... Moss is a very intelligent football player with a need to be totally engaged in the game regardless if he's getting x amount of plays. Have you seen him blocking this season??? He has found a home here that fills his need to be challenged, respected, and engaged with the whole process. I'll bet that he'll finish out here with the Pats, I seem to recall Carter mentioned that he didn't break Minn bank when he could have.

We're lucky Bill runs a tight ship where commentary is concerned 'cause I do think some of them get what an entitled whining almost impossible to please fan base winning has created here.

As for RM, i think he will stay in NE, because he is understood here and i think there is a good relationship with Brady the GOAT QB.

Your theory's pretty much my theory, PatsChick. And that's the only question I asked -- did anybody else get "that feeling"?

Mo, your comment's hardly worth addressing. I love every one of these guys and it's pretty obvious they're verging on superhuman, in terms of offensive production. The defense's stopping power is pretty damn impressive too. No need to silence all speculation, my friend.

I'm pretty sure the friends/relatives/etc. who read this board can tell the difference between hopes of retaining a player and baseless criticism of same. Too bad all our posters can't.

Everything about Randy radiates a love for the Patriots. He's staying for sure. I have no doubts. Asante is another issue...

He's got a recievers wet dream in Tom Brady, Brady has a QB's wet dream in Moss. Moss can continue to put up personal numbers here to put him even further ahead of any reciever in the league. He's around winners, a core group of veterans and coaches that will keep him grounded and focussed giving him more opertunity to be even better. If I were Randy Moss I'd be looking to stay at an organistation and situation like the Patriots for aslong as possible and I think he recognises this.

IMO he'll want to finish here and look to get it done with us. He'll want want his worth, who wouldn't? But I dont think money will be high on Randy's list.

He loves it here, to say the least. And I just checked out an interview on nfl.com (it was a video) of his from August 12, 2007. The season hadn't even started yet and he was excited. Here's the interview (for those who are curious):

Q: You look happy. You're smiling... new city, new town. How's New England treating you?
RM: I'm enjoying it. It's a pleasure to be here. Definitely with an organization that really has high expectations for themselves and everything they've accomplished, I know it's in the past of what they've done, but it's a pleasure to be here. I mean, they've been able to do it and that's what I wanna have, an opportunity or chance to play in a Superbowl. I didn't say anything about 'you know I'm gonna come there and get me a ring and do it this year', I'm not talking like that because that's not the philosophy here. The philosophy is we're going to work hard everyday. We're gonna put eleven guys on the field and with the eleven guys we put on the field we'll see what happens.
Q: How do you feel going into the season: mentally? Physically?

You have guys like Tedy Bruschi, you have Rodney Harrison, you have Kevin Faulk, you have Troy Brown, you have all these great group of guys on this team and you know, who wouldn't want to be a part of what they're doing? And I can't leave my dog out, number twelve Tom Brady, so if arguably Tom Brady's not the best quarterback of all time, then he's sitting right there next to whoever the best might be. So as a receiver, who wouldn't want to play with a quarterback like that? It's something that I really looked that.
Q: You like Belichick?
RM: I love him.
Q: Do you guys talk at all off the field?
RM: Nah. [smiles] To us, he's a people person, you know, because he does talk to us, we do hold conversations, but to go out of his way just to come and hold a conversation, nah, no he doesn't do that.
Q: Do you believe you will be able to perform just as well here in New England, as you did in say Minnesota, the first of couple years?
RM: I just wanna come out here and contribute to my team with whatever it may be. I don't really wanna sit here and tell you that I'm gonna do this or I'm gonna put up these numbers or I should be seeing this many balls or score this many touchdowns, that's not my mindset. My mindset is to do whatever I can to help this team win some games. And that's basically knowing your role, so my role is to catch balls, get open, score touchdowns.
Q: In '98 and 2000, we barely missed the Superbowl by one game. Was that a bigger deal then or is it a bigger deal now?
RM: The reason why it's a bigger deal now is because I haven't seen a Championship game since 2000. The reason why it wasn't a big deal then was because we were still young 'we'll get back, we'll get back'. But you know, Cris Carter once told me, he's like, 'man, you better cherish those moments because you never know when you'll get an opportunity like that... to be on a pedestal like that again'. Now that I'm a little bit older and I've seen what he really said, it's like, wow, I really didn't take advantage of it. But now that I'm 10 years into the league, if I get an opportunity like that again I'll take advtange of it, trust me.
Q: So what is it about?
RM: It's about winning, man. It's about winning. This is the game that we play. You know, I really can't be in any better place than the New England Patriots because I have a headcoach, who all he cares about is winning. So, I think that players get frusterated, and you should get frusterated when you lose, you know the thing about losing is how you handle it, how you handle the pressure of losing. Some people can handle it, some people can't. Earlier in my career, I couldn't handle it because I wasn't used to losing, but now that I'm a little older and over the course of my career I've lost a lot of games, so it's very frusterating but like I said, man, I'm with a great group of guys that know how to work. They know how to come out here and prepare themselves, and at the same time they don't like losing. And that's something I can definitely appreciate because we play this game to win.
Q: Besides the ring in professional football, what's left?
RM: The sport. I love it, man. Whenever that drive, that will, leaves me that's when I'll probably leave the game, but right now I don't plan on stopping any time soon.



On a side note, Moss has kids? Who knew.

I think you're simply assuming Moss was speaking only of himself about shutting up the media. The whole team has taken a lot of heat this season. Perhaps he was speaking on behalf of the whole team. In that case, I would imagine that indicates a greater desire to continue with them.

Moss is NOT the most corporate, politically correct, fade-into-the-woodwork guy on the team. Just the "I'm Randy Moss" quote puts him in the top quartile for sticking out. But so what?

Brady is a unique case, because with his endorsement potential he actually makes MORE money in a year from winning than he does from squeezing every last dollar for himself out of the Pats' salary cap. Even so, Moss strikes as a guy for whom it truly isn't about the maximum money. Why does one want money? Roughly put, the reasons are:

A. To spend on oneself and one's family, including in future generations.
B. To give away to distant family and/or charity.
C. For ego.

He has enough for A, and is quoted as recognizing this. He's not a huge case of B. As for C, it seems as if his ego is at this point fueled more by success than paycheck.

I see no reason for him to go out for absolute maximum money.

Besides, there probably are only a few teams that would be so sure of getting the "good Randy", or so desperate, as to pay him absolute max money. Dallas probably would. But where else would he realistically go for more money than the Pats?
