Bah humbug, SI

Fans and media around the country are certainly entitled to their opinions of Belichick, but the cover of the current issue of Sports Illustrated, with a photo-shopped image of a dour-faced Belichick in a Santa suit, was inappropriate and over-the-top.

If nothing else, the decision to run the photo showed a profound lack of respect from the magazine to the coach.

And here’s a guarantee: If Belichick played ball with the publication and its reporters (i.e., fed them information or access, particularly during the videotaping investigation), then there’s no way the editors would have run that photo.

There’s little doubt the Pats have become the bad guys and the team everyone likes to root against, but, really, can you recall other such teams or players/coaches receiving that treatment? Can anyone recall a comparably unflattering portrayal of George Steinbrenner? Kobe Bryant? Ray Lewis? Pat Riley? Larry Bird?

Name a guy. It’s hard to find an example of someone else who was treated that way.

Of course, the situation only makes the victories more sweet in Foxboro.

Aside from the Santa like colors, I thought they portrayed him as more of the Grinch.

I think Felger is right on target. There's not a more petty and thin-skinned group in the world than the American media (sports or otherwise) and BB doesn't kiss their a#&. Felger is also right in how this makes winning all the more sweet in Foxborough.

:rocker: Embrace the hate baby because the haters are choking on all this success!! :rocker:

Hello Pot, this is Kettle...you're black.

I'm not sure how much is genuine hate, and how much is just them building up this "evil Belichick" character they created. Probably a bit of both; Belichick's priorities are obvious and the media ain't one of them, and I'm sure it rubs some of them the wrong way, but for most of them, I think it's just an angle... theater.

Approximately 10 years ago, Upside Magazine was a leading, award-winning tech industry publication. They hired me to write a cover story on AOL, which they expected to be negative. It turned out, to my surprise and theirs, to be a favorable story.

The title Upside selected for the story was "AOL Doesn't Suck!". The picture they made up was of CEO Steve Case dressed in a French maid's outfit, vacuuming a rug.

AOL loved the story and, I believe, bought and distributed reprints.

By comparison, BB doesn't have a lot to complain about here. ;)

I think more thin skinned than the media are fans who are getting worked up over a cover that everyone thought was funny, including the man on it

haha, christ. If it was Manning in his place all of you would be orgasming over how hilarious it would be.

Yeah, pretty much. I really think Felger is going a little far with this, I don't think it is out of turn for SI to lampoon BB's demeanour. Hell, they had Ricky Williams in a bridal gown.

I'm pretty sure a bunch of people were laughing over it just this morning. But way to keep you head up your ass and make baseless judgments.

Well Felger has showed him and the team so much respect.

It's a riot. BB has forged this media image and will be laughing all the way to the Hall of Fame IMO.

Sounds like a great reason to never buy another SI mag.

I think Felger is schizophrenic...

Talk about overreacting....

That's the whole point. They would never do that to Peyton Manning. EVER!!!!!!! ;)

BTW whoever metioned the Ricky Williams wedding dress shot, Ricky and Mike Ditka POSED for that cover. Big difference!

Well, ricky willaims actually dressed up and wore that bridal dress. BB didn't, it was all photoshop. I would say there is a big difference.

IMO, that SI cover was mocking BB and the patriots. It was not showing BB in a favorable light. BB couldn't say anything different about the photo. I'm sure behind doors he didn't like it one bit.

Granted, these days I'm seeing the world through Pats-colored glasses but IMO SI went a little overboard and played to the anti-Pats audience.

Kudos to BB for taking it in stride.

The should photo-shop Felger in a grinch costume and put him on the cover of the Boston Globe Magazine.
