Tuna's first press conference with Dolfins

Watched Tuna on NFLN giving his introductory press conference with Miami. He sounded like he was going to fall asleep; talked real slow and answered questions for about 20 minutes. Said he wants "good character guys," will choose the GM and head coach and oversee the entire operation as Huizinga's right-hand man. Said he "feels the pressure" and will establish structure. May or may not keep the first pick. Nothing remarkable. He sure wasn't inspirational or energetic.

I remain skeptical that Tuna can be a savior as an administrator. All the other franchises he turned around were as coach.

sounds to me like his main job is to evaluate people, from the draft to the staff. i think he is quite good at that.

IMO Parcells is one of the great talent evaluators in football history, and if anyone can acquire talented players for Miami, he can. His ability to acquire and develop talent has always been greater than his ability as a game coach. In this sphere he is a football genius.

I agree with you. During his short stint as ESPN, Parcells has impressed me with his accurate evaluations of players and coaches. He knows the game and he knows the type of players he needs to succeed. If he can avoid conflicts within the organization, Miami will be in the playoffs in a few years.

Except, normally, the GM and the Director of Player Personnel do the talent evaluations, not their boss (Parcells). It sounds as if he is already structuring the organization so he can micromanage.

Well according to the recent poll of who is most responsible for turning a franchise around, a lot here would disagree with you and say that if the Dolphins end up a contender again, they will give most of the credit to the owner Wayne Huizanga.

Well this is great news for the Phins because Parcells is good at what he does.

He builds teams that are in the toilet into teams that will be great in 3-4 years.

Yeah, I heard it too and had a different interpretation. I think his thoughtful deliberation indicates he's taking this role seriously, understands he will need two other key people in oversight roles (GM and HC), and intends to build this team position by position in partnership with the eventual GM and HC. Anyone who thinks they can read or detect any weakness or lack of enthusiasm in his attitude is kidding themselves. He's made a commitment to the Dolphins that can only succeed with complete compatibility among the three team managers. I hesitate to sell this guy short at this time.

My question would be this. Everyone here knows his style. Ignore whiners like TO it is as plain as BP GETS results out of players and does not codle them.

SOOOO....I doubt he changes his "style" as I think it is part of his personality, I don't think it is an act.

How does the GM and coach deal with personality, these are "executive" types not athletes. I am sure he isn't going to say "she will be fine" about the GM (unless of course he hires a female...PC statment inserted here) but I doubt he will temper his entire personality.

Also, sure he is a great talent evaluator. OK, WHAT kind of quality coach is he going to get knowing they will not be able to "buy the groceries"?

You also have to consider with his known ego...and deserved rep...do some of the top canidates saty away because thye might not get "full credit" or BP would get to much.

True. I think he'll be what he always was: a nasty bullying jerk who makes people work hard and knows how to win football games.

It's like saying the person who discovered a new drug in a lab will be good at leading a pharmaceutical company, or the person who invented a new engine will be good at leading an auto company. They require entirely different skill sets.

I agree 100 percent. Can he delegate authority and be OK with that? Tuna is untested in these waters.

And that's why I discount the possibility of Pioli going there to further subjugate himself to his father-in-law, a major league ego.
The Tuner will give a young HC candidate a shot. Filling the GM/personell role will be more difficult with Parcells' influence likely to be major. It will take someone with experience and without ego, perhaps patience to wait the 3 years untill Tuner gets bored and quits.
