Pats is GREATEST team in NFL this Sat.?

No comparison at all. The '72 phins weren't even that great of a team, they just happened to string together 17 wins, many of them being close calls.

You are buying into a false comparison. There are many, many teams in the past few years better than the 1972 dolphins, including three AFC teams last year, and certainly including the 2003 and 2004 patriots.

And there have been several better in the past. Only dolphin homers think that the 1972 dolphins would have done any better against the 1985 bears than we did. They were the best single season team.

The only fair comparison, if the Pats go all the way and win the SB is the 85 Bears. Who gets the edge? Well, the Pats will have the most dominant offense in the history of the game, the Bears that year had arguably the best defense of all time. The difference? 19-0 vs 18-1. Edge Pats.

Sounds about right to me.

You sound like anti_Patriots from 2001.

Wake the eff up will you? How can you say they weren't a great team when they had the mental fortitude to survive 17 straight in the NFL? Did you watch that team? They had a devastating running game, and they accomplished that feat with a backup QB.

Give up the stupid comparisons, and give up the stupid criticisms of a team that won 17 straight. Just accept it. Embrace it. It's the history of the game, and it exists for all of us to admire. Don't be so freaking small that you can't give credit to them for what they accomplished.

Every time you deny their greatness you sow the seeds of some Bears fans or Jaguars fans doing that to our guys twenty years from now.

I never said they weren't a great team, I said they weren't that great, as in greatest team ever. They most certainly weren't, it's not even a question, and I'm not sure how you can even argue that.

I'm not denying that 17-0 wasn't a great accomplishment, it's one of the greatest in the history of ANY sport. But do you honestly believe for a second that the 07 pats would have any trouble dispatching the 72 dolphins? Pound for pound, that team was nowhere near as talented as some of the greats, 85 bears, 07 pats, etc.

I think the Pats would have won more than 5 with Cassel at the helm. FWIW.

Both Parcells and Mike Ditka have said the '07 Patriots would beat the '85 Bears. The Pats would spread them out on D and kill them. Parcell's noted today on ESPN that is exactly what the Dolphins did to them in '85 in handing the Bears their only loss that year.

To tell the truth the 1973 Dolphins team was a better team then the 72 team. They were more dominant and faced far better competition.

I'll try myself not to discount what the Fins of 72 did, but they didn't face a top seed schedule that year. They only played one or two above .500 teams. However, they did have to maintain their composure throughout, which is why I'm so concerned about the Playoffs now. There is no escape hatch, no free tickets, and no empty promises. If they go 16-0, they had best be ready to lay the wood to every opponent, or the 16-0 means nothing.

I do, for one.

Congrats to your team for winning an entire season with the easiest schedule in the hostory of the NFL, with a combined winning percentage of about .350 and without playing a single playoff team.

If they were so great, how'd they do in '73?

Whoo Hoo! Go Phins!

They won 14 regular season games, and three playoff games.

Their record is about to be totally eclipsed. Your Champagne Boys may as well look up an AA meeting, 'cause their drinking days are over.

The Dolphins also won most of the games without even their #1 QB playing. Bob Griese got hurt and Earl Morrall stepped in early in the season, playing all the games until the playoffs, I believe. I have to wonder how good the other teams were that year to lose to a team led by a QB that even Shula called "the old man".

This is actually a very flawed and rather biased article....(What a surprise!)

Pats would absolutely DEMOLISH the 72 doofins.....Game.....Set.....Match.....

There is NO comparison.....Pats would score at will........Doofins would struggle badly......and the Pats have NO running game? WE HAVEN'T NEEDED ONE VIC YOU DOUCHE BAG!!!!

this guy gives the media yet another black eye

To avoid all of this unwieldy 'perfection' talk, and comparisons between teams of different eras, I will simply (and hopefully) think of the '07 Pats as the most accomplished team of all time...

So do you think they played any playoff teams in the playoffs?

You feel threatened by giving kudos to another team I guess. I'm sorry for your vulnerability, but it's not all that impressive to hear anybody knock the only undefeated team in the history of the league.

I do, for one.

Congrats to your team .

BTW: They weren't my team, but I can see why a Primitive-NFL-Brain would conclude that.

If they were so great, how'd they do in '73?

You'd better hope that stem-cell research advances in the brain area because yours obviously isn't getting the job done.

Does anyone else get really sick of listening the dissolution of talent argument? It has to be the dumbest fall back for reporters lacking facts and research since mystic and aura.

Simple facts (even a sports writer can understand)
1972 NFL has 26 teams and the US has 209m people.
2007 NFL has 32 teams and the US has 301m people.

In 1972 there is one team for ~8m Americans
In 2007 there is one team for ~9.4m Americans

If you assume, and statistics back this up, that athletes are evening distributed in a comparable population, then the average talent in the league today is greater than it was in 1972.

Its laughable when I hear people say that an undefeated regular season means nothing if they don't win the super bowl.

The undefeated regular season is the bulk of the accomplishment. If you had to choose between the ice cream and the cherry, what would you choose?

There are 41 teams that have gone undefeated in the post season (think about it).

There has been only 1 to do it in the regular season.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think the Patriots can or will lose in the playoffs, but lets not kid ourselves. 16-0 is an accomplishment.
