Troy as Emergency QB in Playoffs? Or is this his last game? (A question on the rules)

All things being equal I just don't see Troy taking a roster spot in the playoffs - and that's even acknowledging his potential contributions as a backup DB and PR (I think his muff was an abberation and hopefully everyone remembers his incredible heads up takeaway of an INT against the Colts in the AFCCG - just an amazing play.)

But on offense barring injury on Saturday (knock on wood) we're all set at WR and with Watson and Neal hopfefully coming back in the playoffs, that's going to make the 45 man roster that much tighter. That may mean that this is Troy's LAST game in a Patriots uniform.

So my question is whether Troy can be the Emergency QB - which I believe he was before we signed Vinny last season - and come in during the 4th quarter to play WR, PR, or DB as needed during the playoffs?

I understand the rules for an Emergey QB - they don't count on the 45 man active gameday roster, and they can play in the 4th quarter without limiting the ability to put the 1st & 2nd stringers back in.

My question is whether Troy could ONLY play QB - or whether he could be used in other roles if he comes in for the 4th Q.

Perhaps he would need to come in initially as a QB (potential gimmick play) and then could play other positions letting Brady come back in during the 4th? Would he then be able to play other positions in the 4th?

My thought here is that Troy can definately contribute - and there could be a situation where we NEED him to contribute (though I hope not) as he did in last year's playoffs at DB - but if there's a way to have him available without being on the 45 man roster I tihink it'd be worth considering.

Anyone know or care to interpret the Emergency QB rules for me?

EDIT: Gutierrez played ST in some games, so that might be your answer right there.

Troy is a waste of a roster spot, but he is even more of a waste if he can't return punts or go out on an occasional pass route. I expect Brown to be active.

EDIT: Gutierrez played ST in some games, so that might be your answer right there.

Well if Gutierrez was playing ST in anything other than the 4th Quarter that means he was on the 45 man roster.

If it was the 4th we'd still need to see who was on the 45 man roster that day and whether he was on it - or listed as the Emergency QB. So if you know the game perhaps that can be checked.

Overall, knowing that Troy can play QB - and that we frankly hope to God we don't actually NEED our Third String QB in the playoffs - I felt this might be a loophole that could give us an extra all purpose player available in the 4th quarter - and one who just so happens to be a fan favorite and icon as well.

Belichick honored a commitment to Troy and to the fans. He has decided to have Troy go out as a champion. He will try to get him a TD catch on Saturday. Troy will be on the field for the championship and Super Bowl celebrations. This has little to do with winning these games, except that Belichick actually improves morale by treating Troy so well. But make no mistake, Troy Brown is a liability (compared to the alternative) every time he comes on the field. Sometimes Belichick is indeed about more than winning the game.

Sometime during this playoffs Troy Brown will make a play that will make his presence on the roster worthwhile. It may only be 1 play the entire playoffs but this guy is a winner and a smart football player and he always finds a way to contribute.

You people who think he should be left off the roster and forgetting who helped get us to where we are now, and I'm not just talking about this year.

I think its a given Troy will be active THIS week. The question I'm posing is about the playoffs - where I don't think Belichick is going to let sentimentality prevent him from putting the very best 45 guys on the roster.

I'm trying to see if there's a loophole that would give us 46 guys that we could turn to - with Troy being limited to 4th quarter action - or whether the Emergency QB can ONLY play as a QB.

We can close this board to any posts that do not have proof, or we can speculate. Those are our choices.

Many posters have various reasons with regard to why Troy Brown is on the team, and whether he will be active in the playoffs. I look forward to seeing the specualtions of others.

Many were ready to belive that Brown is better than Gaffney or Washington, a would ahve cut one of them to activate Troy Brown.

Vinny T's TD, Flutie's dropkick, and Brown being active for the most recent game are three undeniable examples that BB does care about more than just winning. It goes without saying that winning is such a higher priority than these ancillary goals, but to deny that BB doesn't think about these things is to ignore pretty recent history that states otherwise.

I think you are spot-on with respect to trying to let Troy Brown go out with a TD. Especially, in the Giants game, which would also set another NFL all time record for the Patriots with 22 players scoring in the season, breaking the record that they have presently tied with two other teams at 21 scores.

Absolutely, I agree. Since BB's top priority was already taken care of in the aforementioned games, he had the luxury of letting these historic moments happen. If our opponent had been the Colts instead of the Dolphins this past Sunday, then Brown stays inactive.

Absolutely, I agree. Since BB's top priority was already taken care of in the aforementioned games, he had the luxury of letting these historic moments happen. If our opponent had been the Colts instead of the Dolphins this past Sunday, then Brown stays inactive.

..and with the Patriots in position to make NFL history I can't think he's going to take any chances in letting sentimentality get in the way of that.

Now if there's some way to have a 46 man roster where Troy can be emergency QB, emergency WR, emergency PR, and emergency DB I can't see why he wouldn't do that in the playoffs, assuming the rules don't preclude it, that would strike me as typical Belichick, finding a way to give his team an extra advantage within the rules of the game.

And in that situation, should the Patriots dominate any given opponent, with a win assured THEN one could expect him to entertain the notion of letting Troy have an additional curtain call.
