The Pats First 4 Picks In the '05 Draft are now Starters

I've Just noticed that the Pats first 4 Picks in that draft are now starting for them

1st Round: Logan Mankins OG (32nd Pick)
3rd Round: Ellis Hobbs CB (84th Pick)
3rd Round: Nick Kaczur OT (100th Pick)
4th Round: James Sanders FS (133rd Pick)

Hobbs is too up and down. Hes great at times..average others. I'll keep him and let him develop even though i've criticized him a few times. Kaczur..we could do a LOT better. I also think Light's spot can be improved or restructure contract and go play right side. Im not happy with our tackles but hey..maybe its simply because seeing anyone close to Brady makes me have a heartattack

I like Hobbs and think he's due for a huge pick in the playoffs. Kaczur is serviceable, and to get a tackle in the 3rd rd who can start left or right is a major steal.

By this time next season, IMO people will be saying the similar things about the 2006 draft. Maroney will be running wild, Jackson will be on the field in the spread, Thomas will be recovered and making an impact, not to mention Gostkowski, LK Smith and Willie Andrews. Only at the 3 year mark can you evaluate a draft. For some positions like WR and Qb it can take 4 years.

A couple of weeks ago when the NFLN showed the '05 Pats/Steelers Replay, Kaczur got his first action when Matt Light went down-was surprising how well he held up that day, especially protecting Brady's blind-side.

This team doesn't have any positions of 'need' except linebacker, and that position seems to be one that Belioli prefers filling via veterans. If they let their franchised cornerback go, there would be an issue at the corner. If not, it's all just resigning and maybe pulling in one inside LB.

Have to wonder if the O Line has looked worse with the injuries to Morris, Watson, Brady and Thomas.. there will be lapses in any game.. it is not a trend, 3 of them are going to the probowl.. the glass is 7/8 full.

Mankins is the best player of the bunch, with Sanders steadily becoming a very good player. The jury is out on Hobbs' future. He's ok, but really struggles at times. Kaczur's a solid guy to have on your team as he can play both tackle positions fairly well. He won't be mistaken for Orlando Pace, but he's a decent player who's getting better.

Kaczur best position is a position that he has never played, IMO. He is or would be a very good Guard, but we are stocked everywhere, and he is an acceptable ROT and swing LOT. If Steven Neals shoulder is a chronic diasability, the Pats could draft a tackle and move K to Guard. An unappreciate talent is Wesly Britt. He would be a starter at either LOT or ROT on a lot of teams in the NFL, IMHO. Here he is #4 tackle and # 8 overall of an 8 man oline.

I remember, years ago, hearing people say how the most important picks tend to be in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th round because it's those players that fill roles on good teams. The idea is that your top 2 picks should be starters & key players. If you look at this team, and how it drafts, you can see where that logic applies. The guys the Pats draft at the end of the first day, and beginning of the second day, usually tend to become solid contributors, and even studs.

I expect Chad Jackson & Dave Thomas to be pretty important next year. Maroney has already made strides and appears to be on the path to being a top-notch RB. Meriweather could be a starting S or CB next season, depending upon need. So, 06 & 07 draftees are going to make a lot of contributions in the next few seasons.

Two players from the 2007 draft have already excelled. Wes Welker caught 101 passes so far for the Patriots,and has over a 1000 yards. He was a #2 draft pick and I believe also a #7. A second day pick did pretty well too. He has caught 1400 yards of passes and is one TD away from tying the all time record for TDs in a season by a WR. Randy Moss was indeed a pretty good fourth round pick, too for a future HOF WR just entering the prime of his career.

Even if no body else makes it, the 2007 draft was a spectacular success. However, Meriwether shows signs of developing as well, and we shall see about the carryover SF pick this year as well.

I agree that 2005 was a great draft. We all forget that Kaycur starting at LT in his rokie year, and did rather well. While I agree that we cna always use an upgrade, have a probowler and three addition starters is great.

BTW, the 2005 draft also brought us our backup QB, Matt Cassel. Whatever you think of him, this was certainly a good use of a draft choice. For me, he is an OK #3 QB, which is fine for the 7th round. We also drafted Claridge, a fine LB prospect, whose injuries took their toll.

I agree that 2006 may end up being a solid draft. It is indeed to early to tell. However, there are SEVEN that may contribute in the future.

It is very early, but I will go on record. We chose 9 times in 2007, and basically came up empty. IMHO, we did much better in other years. Overall, our draft strategy is great. We move picks from year to year, and we trade them. But in the end, we make draft choices on Draft Day. In 2007, we chose NINE times. What do we have left after LESS than a year? We have Meriweather and couple of players who we redshirted on IR. Lua wouldn't have made the team. To the team's credit, the front office knew that this draft sucked. We ended up moving a couple of picks into 2008 and picking Meriweather. The jets had the same opinion of the draft and traded everything for a couple of solid players we wanted. We both did well.

Yeah, but there were so few holes on this team going into camp and into the draft that a lot of those picks were bound to end up cuts. Meriweather might turn into a beast, and then when you combine that with the Welker, Moss & SF trades, the 07 draft looks nasty. I also think Mike Richardson might turn into something serviceable, looked good in preseason.
