How bad is Eli Manning?

This town also roasted Phil Simms in the first 4-5 years of his career, and all turned out well

And for the record, in Simms first 4-5 years, he could not hold Eli Mannings jock strap. Eli is Peytons brother, he was the top pick in the draft, and he plays in the #1 market. You can imagine all those factors hold him to an entirely different level of expectations then just about any other QB in the league. Hes probably the most scrutinized QB to ever play in the NFL

One interesting point the fans and host on WFAN were discussing last night was whether Eli REALLY loves playing football and is committed to improving. The host -- Steve whatshisname -- said Eli isn't even as good as his father, and isn't much of a leader. The way they typified him reminded me a bit of Bledsoe -- good athlete but doesn't really have that burning passion for the game.

Thats definitely a reallistic statement

Combine all the factors in his entrance into the league, and no one has played under a bigger microscope. He was the top pick, he told SD to go screw themselves, he plays in the biggest media market, and his brother is on his way to owning every career passing record imaginable.

No one else even comes close. the microscope he plays under dwarfs that of any other QB who has ever entered the league

Eli isn't the only QB who has only faced pressure. Elway pulled the same crap on draft day and he was a stud in Denver. Brady took the job away from the one of the most beloved QB's in Pats history, the media and entire region put Brady under a microscope and he delivered.

Eli is a pansy who can't play in non-pristine weather, and who could have played in perfect weather in San Diego if he wasn't such an arse.

The truth is, Eli benefits enormously from his family name. If he were not named "manning" I guarantee he would not start another game for the NYG. He would have been benched a long time ago. No Qb with 19 INT, 12 fumbles and a passer rating of 70 in his 4th season remains a starting QB in the NFL.

The guy plays every week. Hes played through a separated throwing shoulder, an injury that should have kept him out a month. He played with an elbow injury in 2005. Hes never missed a start due to injury, at any level, high school, college, or pro. I dont believe he doesnt "want" to play football. People read too much into body language. Because hes not screaming in peoples faces he somehow isnt competing. Its all about results. If he performs better no one is saying anything about the gomer pile facial expressions

So the guy has the 5th most TD passes in the NFL since 2005 and the team has made the playoffs every year as the starter, but he wouldnt be starting if his name wasn;t Manning? I think thats nonsense. The Manning name hurts him more then anything. Hes held to a much much higher standard. You have people throwing the bust word around like crazy. Alex Smith is a bust. Akili Smith is a bust. Ryan Leaf was a bust. A guy who has thrown 67 TD passes the last 3 years and has taken the team to the playoffs 3 times isnt a bust.

There is no middle ground because of his name. Either he has to be as good as his brother or he is a failure in manys eyes. He cant simply be a solid QB who has some good qualities and wins games

he's bad enough for his team to be heading to the playoffs.

You cannot compare the microscope Elway was under to Eli. Eli is playing in the biggest media market. Elway was playing in Denver in the early to mid 80s at a time when the explosion of mass media was not nearly where it is now. And his brother wasnt a hall of famer

And dont compare Brady and his expectations to Eli. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick, If Tom Brady sucked and was out of the league by his 2nd year no one would have batted an eye, and no one outside of the New England area would have come down hard on him at all. He didnt have nearly Eli's expectations

Bledsoe was the same way -- played through a separated shoulder, a pin in his finger, etc. He was tough as nails and could fire the ball, but never really had a huge fire in his belly. I'm wondering how much of Eli is about doing what a Manning is "expected" to do. Seems a lot of people in your neighborhood are questioning him on that level.

I don't like Rivers, but over the last 2 season he has outplayed Eli by every meaningful measure of Qb play: wins, completion %, TD to INT ratio, passer rating, etc. Most importantly, despite acting like a jerk, which Eli is not, Rivers plays with courage. If you watched him limp through the Titan game taken numerous vicious hits, you would agree. As far as Merriman goes, you would be proclaiming him the 2nd coming of LT if he played for the G-men. I don't dislike Eli, I actually root for him to do well, since the G-men are my dad's team. That makes it so much worse. But you have to face facts, and not be fooled by a decent game here or there. The sooner the giant front office and their fans realize Eli must go the better the franchise will be. Otherwise you will extend misery out for another 5 years, and then have to rebuild for another 5 years to reach SB nirvana.

Rivers plays in a different and far more simplified offense. He also has the benefit of playing in good weather basically all the time. Take a look at Elis numbers when the temp is over 70 degrees. They are great

Secondly, dont tell me about courage. Eli played this season with a separated throwing shoulder, an injury that was supposed to keep him out a month. A game at philly last year Eli gets pounded for 8 sacks and takes the Giants back from a 24-7 deficit in the 4th quarter to win a game. He kept getting back up, and kept on firing

And Merriman wouldnt have played for the GMEN under any circumstances. Why would the Giants draft a 34 outside LB? He certainly couldnt play DE. Hes a 1 trick pony, he does that trick well, but its not a fit for the Giants at all. They already lead the league in sacks without him

The "high standard" he's being held to is not being the worst starting Qb in the NFL. Right now, he's exceeding those expectations by beating out VY and Tarvaris Jackson by an eyelash. Congratulations. I realize you've invested emotionally in this player, but you;ve got to cut your losses. It's like a relationship with a woman: She's sleeping around town, farting under the covers and cursing at your mother, but you're clinging to her out of habit. Free yourself!

If Eli is the worst starting QB in the NFL then explain to me how only 4 guys have thrown more TD passes since the start of the 2005 season, only 6-7 have thrown for more yards, and only 3 other guys have taken teams to the playoffs 3 years in a row

And Eli Is The Reason The Giants Havent Won A Super Bowl

Say What You Want About Kerry Collins But At Least He Got Us To The Damn Dance Eli Can't Even Win A Playoff Game

I Think The Giants Will Beat Tampa Bay But If Eli Somehow Manages To **** That **** Up I Wont Be Surprised

Did You Watch The Game Against The Bills Eli Was ******* Horrible He Somehow Managed To Fumble The Ball When There Was No Pressure On Two Separate Occassions

If Kerry Collins Had The Talent Eli Had He Would Have Won A Superbowl By Now

Eli Throws The Ball Too High For The Tallest Lankiest Wr In The ******* Nfl In Plaxico Burress

Every Single Year Eli Gets A Pass Because His Name Is Manning But In The End He Will Never Be The Franchise Qb He Was Supposed To Be AND THAT MEANS HES A BUST!

You want a reason the Giants havent won a superbowl?

2005- 14th in the NFL in pts allowed
2006- 26th in the NFL in pts allowed
2007- 14th in the NFL in pts allowed

The Giants defense has been average to bad during his time here. Just now under Spagnuolo are they starting to get it together. Theyve made the playoffs on the backs of their offense, not the defense

Dont compare these teams to Kerry Collins in 2000 when the Giants were top 5 in the NFL in pts allowed and middle of the pack in scoring. The Giants scored more points with Eli in 2005, 2006 and 2007 then they ever scored with Collins as the QB, in any of his 5 seasons

Honest question:

Is Eli Manning scrutinized more than say, Donovan McNabb?

I mean, I don't live in NYC or Philly, but it would seem that Philly fans care (obsessively) about football, and only football... with New York, it just seems to be primarily baseball.

McNabb has won and has been criticized since day 1. That's just my opinion.

Eli has a lot of expectations because of his name and where he plays, but when it comes to football, New York does not top the list in my mind for geographic markets.

NY is definitely more of a baseball town then football. But there are 5x as many people in NY then Philadelphia. Even the 2nd most popular sport in the area can generate more interest and scrutiny then the most popular sport in other towns. Theyve sold the building out every game theyve ever played in the 32 years at Giants Stadium. People here care about football. It does not fly under the radar

See, I was not aware of that. Living in Mass, where baseball is and has been the toast of the town, I guess I can relate since the situation we both live in is similar (with the Giants having the lmuch-longer history).

I would just say that McNabb comes under criticism more often because of the frequent coverage in the national media.

I was just wondering.
