Eagles cornerback points finger at coaching staff

Column by Kevin Roberts

The Eagles were tight this season. They played tight, and thus poorly, when they found themselves in a must-win game. It started with the coaches, and trickled down to the players.

And now that the pressure is off, and everybody is loose, the Eagles are playing better and they look pretty good.

This was the explanation Sheldon Brown offered to reporters after Sunday's game. It's a jarring assessment, because it speaks to all the worst things about a team and a coach and group of players who will sit at home during the playoffs, wondering what might have been.

Brown was talking about how the Eagles were loose Sunday in an impressive 38-23 win over New Orleans -- a team that absolutely had something to play for. The Eagles, who had nothing to play for, turned in one of their best performances of the year.

And, why now? Where was this when the Eagles could have used it?

"We all played tight -- you know what I mean?" Brown told reporters Sunday. "The last two weeks it was like: Let's just go play ball. We should have had that attitude from day one."

Someone asked Brown why that didn't happen.

"It's a trickle-down effect," Brown said. "If the coaches feel tight, it trickles down to the players. They're like: Oh, I can't make a mistake. I can't make a mistake.

"Now the coaches are relaxed, the players are relaxed and we're having fun playing and that's how it's always been since I've been here. I don't know why it wasn't that way from the beginning."

We can debate the way this team has performed in big games, pressure games, when they were an elite-level team from 2001-2004. But the idea that Andy Reid has squeezed his team until it folded under the pressure has never been part of the discussion.

Reid has had a trying and difficult year personally, and it's sort of hung over everything. The Donovan McNabb soap opera has sort of hung over everything.

There was a lot of stuff muddying the waters this season -- everybody looking sideways at the head coach and the quarterback. That's draining, an oh-gosh-what-now feeling that gets in the way. And maybe that did create a pretty tight atmosphere.

In fairness, this is just theory -- and it certainly can come across as an excuse. The head coach gives off a vibe (or whatever you want to call it) and teams typically take on the personality of the guy in charge. If Reid was edgy and anxious this season, yeah -- that could trickle down into the locker room.

But the players can always just go play better.

Still, how many times have the Eagles faced an absolute must-win game this season and responded with a strong, all-around game? You'd have to say just twice -- a 33-25 win over the Redskins in Washington and the blowout over Detroit (mitigating factor -- they were the Lions).

No one expected the Eagles to compete with the Patriots, and they played a strong game but lost. Then in two definitive save-the-season games against Seattle and the Giants Dec. 2-9, the Eagles lost two heartbreakers.

It's been that kind of season. It's useless to look at what might have been -- there's no money in it. But it's hard not to.

Sheldon Brown is a scrub. Dont listen to what any e-girl has to say the boys run them

To be kind, it's been a very dysfunctional year in Philly. Aside from the TO fiasco several years ago, it appeared that the Eagles were a well run , well oiled machine that always competed at the highest levels. This year, the wheels fell off that bus and it's like the rats abandoning ship......... If McNabb is traded, wait for it to get very ugly and in predictable ways....

Cowboys run them? 10-6, right?

hahaha lets ignore the game in philly and focus on the lil early christmas present and btw, what did that "WIN" do for their season, WILDCARD contention, or pretty much confirm a position on the couch after this weekend?

putting brown's comments aside, the eagles are an example of how fragile success in the nfl can be. this is a team that went to four or five NFC championship games and one SB. then, the a season lost to the post SB saga of TO (started by his remarks about McNabb's performance in that game), the mcnabb injuries, all topped off this year by Andy Reid's very public family breakdown.

Lurie is one of the classiest owners in the NFL and deserves better, but it's time for him to look to the future. i'd let mcnabb move on and it's probably time to let andy reid take a year off and then look for other opportunities. then, a three to five year rebuild.

A division winner from the year prior and what will be a 7-9 team at worst needs to gut everything and take a 4 year plan to rebuild?

Reid is still a very good coach and a healthy McNabb can be a very good QB. They don't need to rebuild, they need a healthy QB and a couple players here and there to get back into contention in the NFC.

If Reid needs time off for his family that's another thing, but they don't need to tear apart the organization because of this year.

They also need quality receivers on offense.

The Eagles have pretty much sucked consistently for 3 years now, outside of 1 hot month at the end of last season with Jeff Garcia at QB. That hot month is the only reason they havent missed the playoffs 3 consecutive years now

They also need quality receivers on offense.

that's the yearly mantra around here and the response from the Eagles FO is that we're satisfied with what we've got. The year they had TO, they went to the Super Bowl but at a price.....Curtis is an upgrade but they need a legit #1....
I guess they soured after the Freddie Mitchell experience.

the problem with the eagles is they let guys like that run their mouths....

Rush was right.

I have a problem with their over rated QB.

This is Bledsoe revisited. They are inconsistent because their QB is inconsistent and has accuracy problems.

They could use some receivers, for sure, but ultimately, McNabb will only take them so far before he chokes.

As I said before, it is going to get ugly when he leaves town via trade or being cut. The Eagles, as a rule get rid of players when they turn 30....the age when BB linebackers come of age and McNabb is soon approaching that if not already and combined with a ballooning cap number, he's history. But, he will get a few parting shots on his way out of town. The issue with Pam Oliver is just the tip of the iceberg and add in Philly media.........stand back and watch....

i grew up in philly (my first NFL game was to watch the 1960 Championship Team, the last Eagles' NFL champion and the only team to beat a Lombardi team in the NFL championship game) and have followed the team as closely as time allows.

it's time for the franchise to realize that McNabb, as good as he was and for whatever reasons it hasn't happened these last three years (including both TO and injuries), is not going to lead them to the promised land. they were a very fine team earlier in the decade, suffered terribly from the TO mess after the SB loss and just haven't gotten on track again. I may be wrong about Reid, but, putting aside his personal problems, I generally believe in "courses for horses" and mcnabb was his ticket. it's time to turn the page in philadelphia.
