Kerry presses NFL
Link|Comments (40) By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 24, 2007 08:34 AM
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has appealed to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to take action to ensure that all Patriots fans in New England, and across the country, will have the chance to view the team's season finale against the Giants.

The game is scheduled to be broadcast on NFL Network. WCVB in Boston (Channel 5) will also carry the game, but that still means parts of New England won't be able to see it.

“In just five days, the Patriots will try to become the first team since Don Shula’s legendary ‘72 Dolphins to finish the regular season undefeated, but huge numbers of Pats fans today wouldn’t be able to see the game. Unless immediate action is taken, thousands of fans outside the Boston area will not even have access to the broadcast,” Kerry said in a press release.

“If this isn’t fixed in a hurry, it speaks volumes about how some big interests see the fans. I hope the NFL sees the error of its ways and allows every ‘twelfth man’ to see this unprecedented event.”

Full text of Kerry's letter can be found by clicking the link below.

Forget about homlessness, forget about genocide, or the war in Iraq, or orphans. Who cares that the environment is going down the tubes?

Kerry chooses a legit cause worthy of his time. Never mind that people could just buy Directv. It's pretty sad that the government has to intervene on this.

Not have access. Ha ha. Plenty of bars/restaurants will happily give anyone access.

It is what it is. The NFL is a corporation that has a product to sell. They don't have to let people watch their game's for free. If they want to be greedy, they can.

Best thing he's ever done.

The Government regulates businesses. The NFL is a business. The fact that the NFL has an antitrust exemption means that if the NFL abuses that power that it IS the govt's business.

true, it's not like Bill Gates has ever dominated a market or Walmart has ever controlled a market also.

the fact is people are mad because it inconveniences them. they don't want to go to a bar or restauarant or buy direct tv.

homelessness doesn't bother people until it's in your neighborhood or you become homeless.

Kerry should do something legit like increase recycling or get rid of tolls. Can't believe he took up this cause for a few votes.

our world will be a better place to live and work if our government really pays attention to our concerns.

I hope Kerry will write a letter to SS office or unemployment office for us when we need help. Do you believe that Kerry actually worries about our football game when he and other don't care about our healthcare and wages.?

what's up with Kenedy nowday.? If he writes a letter to NFL commission, i'm sure this football coverage will be resolved quickly. Kerry and Kenedy need to team up.

The NFL has a special EXEMPTION from the law. Wal-Mart and Microsoft don't. Wal-Mart dominates markets but is not alleged to do anything illegal. It's just good at what it does I guess.

It's a red herring to bring up other companies. The NFL has a special exemption. It agrees to do certain things for that.

Kerry pursuing this doesn't mean he isn't persuing "recycling" or whatever. Tolls?

What you're doing is making a false dichotomy. He either pursues this or pursues other things. He can do both.

And yeah, "solve homelesssness". He'll pass a law, creating a 'program' that will do just that. So simple! Why don't you run for senate?

This should be no surprise to anybody that follows the corruption in the MA congressional delegation. Who is the 4th largest contributor to Kerry's 2008 re-election campaign ? Time Warner, who owns dozens of cable companies:

They were the #5 single largest contributor to Kerry in the 2004 election:

No flipping here .... at least when Kerry's bought, he stays bought.

LOL. when you hear a politician, there is always money behind what he says...

Asking a New England politician to not come out against Pats fans missing an important game is like telling Brady he can't hit Moss even though Moss is standing alone in the end zone. Because its too easy. He has to do the sporting thing and force one into Gaffney even though he's triple covered.

Congressmen and Senators do an enormous amount of work that never gets noticed. They have to go after easy ones like this one just to be noticed.

i'd say more like your everyday life. I don't the world would be for the betterment of mankind if everyone can watch a football game...lol

I would but I have no money and I won't sell my soul.
