the phin TD where he got beat on a sideline out..there were two Patriot secondary players about ten yards in front covering NOBODY...did you see that?...I picked up on it on replay...Hobbs took the post away but had no help to the sideline...I think it was a busted coverage

I think Hobbs is a corner thats gonna win some battles but also lose some.. in other words good but not great.

It's hard to judge as we do not know all the D assignments, on the TD was looking for a safety, but did not see one.. he makes a lot of good plays and is a team player playing on a team defense.

I've posted a question about Hobbs a couple of weeks ago. My biggest issue with him is that he hesitates or seems apprehensive about tackling. Last night he showed that same characteristic again. And seems to get beat several times also. I don't know if he's peaked or in some type of slump this year, but he is costing our defense.

I think we need to make sure that Asante is resigned (within reason) and either draft a corner or grab one in FA. I am scared to death of him being the #1 corner on this team.

At this stage in his career, Ellis Hobbs is exactly where Asante Samuel was at the same time. Remember that Samuel was considered a decent nickel back a couple years ago, and last season had a breakout year that caused many to wonder whether that was just an anomaly, myself included. Ellis is an aggressive, hungry, and committed CB with a career progression that's still on the upside. He's handled himself well this season, and like other players, has had some flaws in his game from time to time that he's corrected. He's going to be fine.

This is exactly right--I think some have the idea that Samuel was considered elite years ago, which is definitely not the case. It takes most guys a couple years starting at least to get to the level they want to be at. If anything, Hobbs is ahead of where Samuel was at the same point in his career.

nothing wrong with ellis. he is a decent #2, and he will step up to a serviceable #1 next year.

He is average at best, I would rather see Gay starting at the #2 spot. He gets burned way too many times for TD's.

I may be wrong here but I don't think the TD he gave up was all Hobb's fault. I think Merriweather was suppose to cover deep out where as Hobb's primary role was slant in. Merriweather looked like he bit on playaction and was way out of position.

But I would think Hobb's is at little above average. He doesn't have ints but he always is around the ball and does break up his share of passes. If qbs throw enough pass towards any CBs direction, they are bound to make some completion. With Samuels on other side and him having rep as top CB, Hobbs gets picked on far more than average NFL CBs, thus making him look pretty bad at times.

Hobbs is regressing as a player. I used to think he could be a very good player, and had gotten into arguments with some friends who thought he stunk. He played well in the AFCCG last year, but I think that's masked some of his deficincies. I've never seen a corner play so far off a reciever at the line of scrimage. He seems to get toasted a lot, and never looks very fluid when the ball is thrown to his reciever. He's average at best.

Sorry but I can't drink the koolaid on this one. Hobbs looks like a mediocre corner that gets burned fairly frequently. Maybe there's a reason that defenses decide to test Hobbs instead of Samuel... it's called attacking the weakest link in the defense. Sometimes I wonder if Gay wouldn't fare better out there. The Pats need to sign a decent FA corner or draft one to develop in 2008.

I think Hobbs is a solid #2 corner. He's good in coverage and thats the most important thing. He has some lapses, but what corner doesn't ?

If I have a been with him its that he could be better against the run. But the Hobbs bashers should realize there are plenty of plays where the coverage is tight on his side of the field. Do you think all of our sacks are due to pash rush? I would say a good percentage of them are coverage sacks, and I don't see Hobbs getting a lot of help in coverage, none more than anyone else would on this defense.

A good way to rate anyone is to imagine if he was available on the open
market & speculate how many teams would jump on him. I would say quite a
few. He is young and it's frustrating to see him get beat (badly some times) but
the last time I looked young corners tend to get treated badly in the NFL.

Sure you did - you saw Asante Samuel playing that far off and getting abused in 2005 until they replaced Starks with that rookie corner Hobbs and the secondary started to perform better...you've just let his 2006 4th year performance blank out the bad Asante memories.

BTW they play the scheme they are told to. If you have a problem with that, your problem is with Pees and Belichick. Ellis takes a lot of hits on here for being the last line of defense when 2 or 3 other guys blow assignments or because zebras can't decide amongst themselves what constitutes PI from one game to the next.
