Why doesn't 12-4 Jacksonville go to Indy in the divisional round?

It's my understanding that teams are reseeded following the wild card round based purely on won loss record. IOW, if #5 seed Jacksonville finishes the season at 12-4, they would go to Indy in the divisional playoffs provided they win their wild card game.

This seems to contradict Peter King's statement in his MMQB:

San Diego 33, Denver 30. Here's what San Diego faces: They win out, and they're the third seed. Significant, because the Chargers would face a lesser team than Jacksonville (Cleveland or Tennessee) in the wild-card round, then have a divisional game at Indy instead of New England. Whereas the fourth seed, Pittsburgh, has Jacksonville coming to town (and the Jags have a three-game winning streak over the Steelers), with the winner traveling to New England the following week. I'm going all out to win this one if I'm the Chargers.

TEAMS ARE NOT RESEEDED EVER!!!!

Once the playoffs start whatever seed they were in the
begining remains throughout the playoffs.

Peter King is correct.

In the divisional playoffs, the No. 1 seed is assured of playing the lowest-seeded Wild Card survivor. There are no restrictions on intra-division games and the higher seed of any matchup will have home-field advantage.

I believe you are wrong.

EDIT: I see now that Pittsburgh at 11-5 was forced to play at #1 seed Indy in 2005, and at 10-6 played at #2 Denver in the divisional round. You are right, thanks for clearing that up.

Another reason to play for the 3 seed is in the unlikely event that the top 2 seeds lose their games the next week and you win, you then have the AFCCG in your house.

Please use past history to back up your belief.

NE will play either the 4th,5th or 6th seed in their first playoff game. As #1 seed the are gauranteed to play the lowest seeded team.

Pats will play the lowest remaining seed
after the wildcard round.!!

If seeds 5 & 6 both lost NE would play seed #4...

Wildcard round
Seed 1 bye
Seed 2 bye
Seed 6 @ 3
Seed 5 @ 4

NE will play either the 4th,5th or 6th seed in their first playoff game. As #1 seed the are gauranteed to play the lowest seeded team.

The seeds do not change. However, the playoffs are not a typical "March Madness" playoff bracket. After wildcard weekend, seed #1 plays the lowest remaining seed and seed #2 plays the highest remaining seed. This means that #1 NE could play any of seeds 4-6 and #2 IND could play any of seeds 3-5.

King is assuming that the 3 and 4 seeds both win and move on......That is where he is in error. If the 5 and 6 seeds both win in the wild card round, the 5 seed Jax would go to Indy and the 6 seed Browns / Titans would go to New England

I think he is speaking from a "Charger" standpoint when talking about the Chargers and from a "Steeler" standpoint when talking about the Steelers. He assumes both teams would win and then move to NE/IND, which is probably the belief in both those teams' locker rooms and fan bases.

Chargers don't have a choice but to go all out since the Steelers game got moved to 4:15 yesterday.

The 4 division winners are always seeded before any wildcard teams. Remember when a 12-4 Jacksonville visited the 10-6 Patriots in the wildcards a few years ago?

Then the divisional playoff games are re-seeded, contrary to an earlier post.

They are reseeded in the sense that when there's an upset, they don't necessarily stay in the same "bracket".

Jags are 5th because they didn't win their division, so the seeding looks like it will be NE-Indy-SD-Pitt-Jags-Tenn, though Cleveland could end up 6th.

- #3 SD would play #6 Tenn or Cle. SD probably wins.

- #4 Pitt would play #5 Jags. Jags probably win.

- that leaves you with seeds 1, 2, 3, and 5 still alive. #1 NE would play #5 Jags, and #2 Indy vs #3 SD.

However, if SD is upset in the WC game by either TN or CL, then it's all different, because the remainings seeds are 1, 2, 4 or 5, and 6. The Pats would play #6 TN or CL in that case.

That would be great not only because we'd be playing TN or CL, but it would also mean that Indy has to play Jacksonville or Pitt.
