quote: "Bill Belichick's Patriots will likely make history by posting a perfect regular-season record (at least). And Brad Childress, Romeo Crennel, Jack Del Rio and Mike McCarthy have done "the most with the least." But no head coach has done a better job through adverse circumstances than Dungy, whose Colts were 10 minutes against New England and a last-second missed field goal against San Diego from being 14-0 themselves."

there is soooooo much wrong with this entire paragraph, im just furious this clown has a job...i cant even think straight.

whats stuck up your hole, man. did someone rape you last night?

Smith is right; despite all of their key injuries, the Colts are 10 minutes away (or better yet, one defensive stand) and a chip shot field goal away from 14-0, on the way to 16-0. And if you mention this to any Colts fan, they will agree 1000% with you.

Funny though; if you say the Patriots were a couple of key injuries and one first down, OR, one defensive stand, ie, 59 seconds away from yet another Super Bowl win to those same Colts fans, they will disagree with you 1000%.

Funny how that works out.......................

I love it when you look at a teams losses and point out the woulda, shoulda and coulda's. But, don't say the same thing about a lot of their wins this year. Maybe with some decent calls Jax beats them, maybe with a fortunate bounce KC beats them. Maybe, Oakland beats them if the refs call that PI on Hayden on Oaklants last play. Pinned wr's arm down before ball arrived. Also, won by 2 at Tennessee. Vince Young had the ball late in the game near mid-field before Colts stopped them.

...and 6 picks in a game from being 14-0 too! This argument may hold up if the Colts had only one loss this season - but they have 2 so it's ridiculous.

Woulda coulda shoulda......at the end of the day WHO actually is 14-0 ???

I like Smith but I disagree with him here. In years past Dungy was a shoe-in for 'coach of the year' when the dolts were still undefeated, and that's all the media would talk about....how Dungy did a masterful job of keeping his team focused despite being undefeated. Those where the same years where NE had all the injuries and kept on winning. NE can go 19-0 and win everything and BB won't win the 'coach of the year' award because the media hates him. With all that said though, who cares....let's just keep winning and Dungy can polish his trophy while watching us hoist the Lombardi! (on a side note RAC deserves it more than Dungy!)

You're furious?
What did he say that's wrong?
Seriously, I can't see anything you can be "furious" about.

Why is it that when someone writes an article that doesn't favor the Pats or bow down to the Pats or show some sort of allegiance to the Patriots, it automatically makes them "idiots". Michael Smith is NOT an idiot and is a very talented writer, especially with the recent drain of writing talent in Boston in the past couple of years. Do writers ALWAYS have to favor the Patriots, even if they live in the area? NO. I disagree with Smith's article, but that's the whole point, to read it and form an opinion yourself. I just don't get why these people are labeled "idiots". Disagree, sure. Idiots, hardly. Get over it.

People were calling for Brad Childress's head before they picked up a few wins, said he wouldn't even last the season... funny how things change.

The statement he made about the Colts is true, as far as I know. they've overcome injuries to key players.

As far as coach of the year, I really think that's a joke anyway. It usually goes to some guy with one good year following a crappy one.

If it was really for best coach, BB would have won at least three or four.

it just really sticks in my craw that dungy is so glorified by everyone in the entire media, while bill gets shat on week after week. im just tired of the spygate stuff man; it really stresses me out.

this should read; "but no head coach has done a better job through adverse circumstances than bill belichick".
misc injuries to players who's names dont end in "manning" dont count as adverse circumstances dungy. spygate is an adverse circumstance.

"Adverse" circumstances you needlessly create yourself should perhaps not be factored into deciding how well a job a coach has done...

He is a hater.....face it....he is in good company these days........
jealous MUTHAFU##ER!!!!

 @ just 10 minutes away.

The Cowboys were just 2 quarters away of beating us as well.

Also Smith sucks on those on-sight reports on ESPN, he sounds so unnatural.

But seriously though....they played US and lost.....and SD and lost......(Don't give me the whiny....."well if it weren't for a missed last minute FG"....NO....if you had done the right things ALL FUGGING game....You would have Won douche bag!!!"!.....IN all seriousness, what other teams that are GOOD out there right now have they played and beaten? .......I respect the Jags alot....but I do not see them as a top tier team with Garrard as their QB........He is OK....but prone to big time mistakes.........Colts have had a pretty soft schedule and well laid out.......In all seriousness, BB is the coach of the year....because he and the Pats have overcome adversity and made history (I know next week is sweet 16.....but seriously.....NO team has ever won 15 straight games in a regular season......NEW RECORD! (I know....another one....ho hum!)

I've always thought that comments about "this close" in a losing game were mostly worthless. But this is what many Patriots fans have harped about the loss to Indy last January. So Smith is using the same logic that a lot of Patriots fans have used. They're all wrong. If you lose, you lost - period.

I think Smith is correct that other coaches, especially Dungy and McCarthy, have done a lot with "less", so to speak. The Pats are arguably the most talented team top to bottom, and they have been relatively healthy compared to the Colts.

That being said, who gets credit for building the most talented team, and keeping it focused on the most difficult mission ever? It's amazing to me that Bill's job to keep the team focused and "up" is overlooked constantly. Many other teams lost their focus and failed to do what this team has done. So why doesn't that rate some newsprint?

No one year should be seen in isolation in my opinion. This team has been in the stages of being built for several years and it's just coming to fruiition. Who was most responsible for that? How can he not just be a slam dunk for COY?

Smith is cherry-picking, but if he gets real he'll have to look at how difficult Bill's job was this year. It was more difficult than keeping a team together through injuries, in my opinion.
