Thanks to WMUR channel 9 for negotiating the last game of the season with the NFL network. Unfortunately, most MA over the air stations will be blacked out so if you can't make the festivities in Foxboro you are out of luck. Let's hope next year we don't have to sweat this out again.

Why would most Boston channels be blacked out anymore then a normal NFL game.

I thought the local affiliate that carried the NFL in this case i guess FOX would be the carrier as it is in an NFL city home game......And Fox is on all cable systems i am aware of.

In this case even though it is an NFLN game it still gets broadcast over the air in the teams home market and that would include the NFL channel in NY that carries Giants games or am i missing something being exclusively on dish.

The last time I looked it up, WCVB Boston was to have the game. Is this still accurate?

Very odd the NFL will not give the same consideration to Providence TV since the vast majority of Patriot ticket holders come from south of Boston with a high number living in Rhode Island and most visiting teams fly into/out of RI and stay in Providence.
Odd the NFL would consider New Hampshire hometown territory and could get the game but not Rhode Island.
Patriots are much more closely aligned with Rhode Island than New Hampshire.
BTW not sour grapes on my part. I have the NFL network on my cable so I'll see the game. Just a strange decision by the NFL based on the actual demographics of Patriot nation.

The NFL will have to figure this out for next year, as NFLN becomes more and more popular. In the meantime, individuals and individual channels will need to do what they need to do. If your read carefully, it is not a matter off the NFL favoring NH, it is a matter of WMUR doing its job as it always has done. It is only VHF channel in NH, and has often made deals with various networks to get us coverage. This has been the case, for example, when the game was on ESPN, which many NH folks do not get. So, this time WMUR negotiated with the NFL, while the RI stations whined about it.

A fan does what he need to do. I recall wanting to watch Olympic coverage, only to find it blacked out on Channel 5 and 9 for some local event. I ended up getting a Chicago channel from DISH for a month.

Thanks to some weird geographical thinking by Neilsen, WMUR is considered a Boston market station; while the RI stations are by themselves. It's a loophole and they took advantage of it.

So Comcast 'Boston' customers in NH who get Boston's Channel 5 will get the game except in the excluded areas. I verified this via Comcast's TV planner where you can enter your zipcode.

NH Channel 9 if carried by your cable company (Comcast verified) will also show the game. Boston 5 and NH 9 are stations that would be BLACKED OUT if there was not a sellout at Gillette. The Providence RI stations would NOT be blacked out were there a sellout. Win some, lose some.

It is wierd that Providence is considered a TV market? Southern NH has been a suburb of Boston for decades. This is not an invention of the NFL. I think it is wierd that the patriots are considered a Boston team. That is the heart of the matter. If the patriots were considered a Providence team, we would have acompletely different set of issues. The NFL rules indeed recognize TV markets, and the patriots are part of the Boston market.

Who took advantage? RI used to get the patriot games when the patriots were blacked out on channel 5 and 9 because the games weren't sold out.

The December 29th game can still be found on the NFL Network on MetroCast Digital Basic service. If you would like to sign up for MetroCast Digital Service, call today and we will be happy to install you in time for the big game.

You won't believe how much the Giants are hated in my family, except my older brother who is a Giants fan. I had this one circled when the schedule came out and plans were made. Now it turns out to be somewhat meaningless and I won't get on my own TV.:enranged::enranged:

I bet it is way less than many of the other pay-per-view sports events that people willingly pay for. I uspect you just wanted to go the pub, since the game is meaningless.

No I refuse to pay those people any more for a bunch of worthless channels just to get one. I would be willing to pay for the channels that I want. I'll gladly give back 15 channels that I have now for the NFLN.

But the NLF has anything but clean hands in this. My anger is not directed at the cable company alone. Since when is New England metro Boston? They can black out the rest of the world but show the New England Patriots to New England.

It's just like when a game is on ESPN... because the primary carrier is cable-only, over-the-air stations in each team's hometown bid on the rights to the game. It is completely independent of the normal CBS/FOX network contract rules.

The problem is that only the winning bidder over-the-air station, in the *Primary* market for each team, can show the game. And the game can not be shown at all in secondary markets, like Providence, even if the station from the primary market (WCVB in this case) is carried on secondary market cable systems.

If Providence does not get the game, I blame in part Bob Kraft. He has influence and is not standing up for his core fans... he is basically halfway between Providence and Boston. If Green Bay can have dual primary markets then Kraft needs to lobby for the Patriots to have dual primary markets.

But if all you need is to get digital basic and he doesn't have it, then he must not have digital cable. Getting digital cable may well not be a simple "get it then cancel" deal, when I upgraded to digital cable I needed a visit from the service tech to swap out the cable boxes. You're not going to get it for one week cheaply.
