Would a perfect regular season be more memorable than winning the Super Bowl?

Don't get me wrong - I want the Pats to win the SB, but don't you think 15 years from now most people would still be talking about a perfect 16-0 season more than they would remember who won a Super Bowl 15 years ago? A perfect 16-0 regular season is much more rare than winning a Super Bowl and may be more memorable long term. But lets still do both :)

Nope, it would only become one of those factors you could use in a Brady vs Manning argument. It's like Colts fans bragging about how they're undefeated in September. Nobody cares. You have to win it all in my opinion.

Idiocy.

Regular season is MEANINGLESS except for winning HFA in the playoffs. If you are 16-0 and then lose even in the SB, you are still LOSERS. Only thing that matters is the SB.

I'd rather go 11-5 and win the SB than 16-0 and not.

Teams play to win the Super Bowl. Period.

Don't get me wrong, 16 and 0 would be awesome, but if the team doesn't win SB #4, big deal.

No denying that going 16-0 is a much rarer event than winning a super bowl. A team wins the super bowl every single season played whereas it's extremely rare for a team to not lose a game in the regular season.

Honestly, given the fact the Patriots have already won 3 super bowls I'd probably remember a no loss season more than another super bowl win when all is said and done. And, no I'm not saying I'd prefer a no loss regular season over another super bowl win.

There is no question that Patriots would want to go into the postseason with at least a 2 game winning streak no matter what their position is going into the late stretch. So the goal of doing well in the post season requires that they win their last 2 games so there is no decision to make from a Patriots stand point this year that is different from any other year of super bowl runs.

You're right in that years from now they would still be talking about the undefeated season, but it'd only memorable in a positive way if they won it all. You definitely wouldn't want to be remembered as the undefeated regular season team that lost in the playoffs.

I don't understand you people. An undefeated/perfect season means winning EVERY game, regular season and playoff. Its not the 16-0 thats impressive, its the 19-0. 16-0 doesn't mean anything without a trophy. Thats why going 16-0 isn't an undefeated or perfect season yet. jeez

No.....TROLL!!!!!!!!

i would be memorable and very embarrassing to be undefeated in the regular season and lose in the playoffs.

The most impressive thing a team can do is to go undefeated (19-0). The next most impressive thing would be to blowout all the oppenents faced in the playoffs. Hopefully we will accomplish both feats.

That's why there are a lot of pansies out there that want NE to drop one to Miami or the Giants so, if a playoff loss were to happen, it wouldn't be as devastating.

you're right. we'll be in the thick of the playoffs in a few weeks

It would be relevant from a statistical standpoint because it has never been done before. Like Brady and Randy Moss shooting for new TD passing and receiving records or the offense setting a new league scoring record. It isn't as important as the Super Bowl victory, but it ISN'T meaningless either. I suppose it is as meaningless as every other significant football record.

Oh no not this again ;-)

I agree. A 16-0 season and playoff loss w/o a SB win would be mostly remembered as a failure.

Of COURSE an undefeated regular season will be remembered more than winning the Super Bowl...

...for ALL of the wrong reasons. Fans of other teams will take jabs for years if this team doesn't finish the job with an undefeated postseason as well.

Need to remove the regular season qualifier. The Pats must have a perfect season to be remembered the right way.

Chris

How could 19-0 get overlooked by 16-0. Forget the regular season. If you win every regular season game, your season ain't over. Winning all 16 regular season games isn't undefeated or perfect, because you still have 3 more. 19-0 should be the ONLY undefeated talk. This 16-0 stuff is irrelevant, its no different than saying 13-0 or 2-0 is undefeated. It all comes down to winning them all. If we win them all, ALL, then that will be impressive. If people talk about a regular season sweep, it would probably mean we lost a playoff game. No one would talk about 16-0 over 19-0 if we win the SB. No one.

Looking over all the responses, while I agree that it would be a very bitter pill to swallow if the Pats didn't win a Super Bowl, I wouldn't discount the accomplishment of a perfect regular season.

I thought it was impressive last year that San Diego lost just 2 games by 3 points each - i.e. they were 6 points shy of a perfect season.

I'd have to say its even more impressive than that to win 16 games in a regular season.

If I had to choose between a perfect regular season and another Super Bowl ring, the choice is obvious, but I wouldn't be as quick to throw out a 16-0 regular season as a wasted season even if we didn't win the SB.

The comparison is wrong. It is not which is more rare, a perfect regular season vs a Super Bowl. It is a perfect regular season vs four Super Bowls in seven years. I believe in the history of the NFL only San Francisco has bested that feat. That is also rare.
