Rising Stars of the Draft

I though this was interesting... "The 2008 draft is looking like it could be a very good one, especially if many of the top juniors eligible to leave school this winter indeed opt to turn pro this year."

It does appear a little weak at the top but has solid depth. With at least 4 picks in the top 100 the Patriots should be able to get younger and faster on D and add depth. Ironic that there is no truly dominant player in the 1 year we pick near the top.

Even if it meant sitting on their hands and passing I can't see anyway the pick in the top 5 unless the are in love with McFadden.

If we can just stay at #2 I see no way we won't be able to trade down. Belichick will take less value than the chart says if necessary - and we would only need two hot commodities. McFadden is almost certainly one. Who else will be a "rising star" to the top ? Too early to say but who are they usually ? Linemen, Pass Rushers, QBs. Out of Dorsey, C. Long, J. Long, Gholston and the group of QB there is a strong chance that 2-3 will emerge as big time guys giving us the trade down market.

McKelvin is definitely worth watching. To say that Cherilus had "off field issues" is a bit much. The guy broke up a bar fight, and no charges were brought. Maybe there's more there, but from what I've read/heard he's a good guy.

Would it surprise anybody if Joe Flacco were to become the best NFL quarterback in the draft?

It could be just one hot commodity, as long as there are multiple suitors!

Nothing would surprise me with NFL quarterbacks at this point (including the Pats taking one in the 3rd round.)

I could even see the Pats taking a TE or two in this draft.

I'm not sure about two, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they selected one TE within the first 3-4 rounds.

Do they really have to? David Thomas will be off of IR by next year. Let's not forget him. Next year will be kind of like his 2nd year.

I still like Carlson of ND. His stock is down due to crappy Qbs. Rd 2.

Charlie Weiss is going to give BB the total inside scoop on Carlson, but the guy I like is Kellen Davis of Michigan State. Besides catching and blocking he has also played a little DE for the Spartans.

BB loves versatility.

CB Patrick Lee, 5-11, 200, 4.42, Auburn… Never played much prior to this season, but has emerged in recent weeks as yet another good cover corner in a class which appears to be deep in good cover corners meaning teams looking to upgrade at CB at this year’s draft need not force a pick in the opening round but may be able to wain until even the 3rd-4th round area to get a player the quality of a Lee.

Have not heard this about the later roundds.

I think Lee's going to shoot up the boards. Possibly a top 50 pick. That being said, I'm OK with Belichick drafting him on Day One. If I'm not mistaken, he returns kicks too.

Does BB covert good "cover corners"?

I do not think so. I think BB coverts corners are quick twitch, disciplined in zone coverage, excellent ball skills and most importantly that can tackle.

In this defense BB does not play much man coverage.

I think BB will look at Jenkins and Williams of South Florida. Jenkins is probably the best combination of all of the above in this draft. And Lowery of San Jose State because he has the best ball skills in the draft.
There are probably another half dozen that fit the profile to some extent as well.
If we keep 4 day 1 picks, I would not be surprised to see BB take 2 DB, 1 TE or RB and 1 DL/LB hybrid.

McKelvin fits that bill, and he has return ability. As of today my draft would be

1. Gholston OLB
2. Carlson TE
3a. Beau Bell ILB
3b. Leodis McKelvin CB

I can see Gholston at 5. Especially, if his numbers are off of the charts at his workouts. But, no cb until 95? Not a knock on Carlson and Bell. But, I don't think we can wait for a cb. I think Asante will walk. I don't think we can wait that long to draft a cb. I can see 2 cb's in the first 3 rounds. I'm anxious to see Ohio St/LSU game. Might give us a good read on Gholston and M.Jenkins - CB.

I think they could resign Randall Gay for a relatively reasonable price and go with Hobbs, Gay and Richardson, who was redshirted but showed alot of promise in the preaseason. As far as the draft gows, it was unrealistic of me to pick Leodis McKelvin in the 3rd round. He'll probably go in the late 1st early 2nd. So I'd take cb Trae Williams of S Florida in the 3rd.

Hey Pony that is an exciting first day haul. I would not be disappointed if it dropped like that.

I'm hoping Bell can run under 4.7 in order to get on BB's radar screen.

Gholston had an awesome game against J Long and Michigan. That opened my eyes to him a bit.
