Polian approach vs. BB philosophy

See the excerpt below from the recent Polian corner on Colts.com. I highlighted a couple of phrases below from his first answer.
A couple of things struck me:

(1) We all know he's a whiner, but the comment about "rules stacked against" Indy is over-the-top and unprofessional, esp for a guy who is parades his competition committee role.

(2) More importantly, I don't think it's smart strategically to ever publically suggest these excuses are present. I understand the context --Polian was paying his team a compliment, that they didn't accept excuses. It just makes me appreciate BB's philosophy even more. He would never actually say these things this way, not even close. He would never complain about injuries, schedules, and I would be my last dollar he doesn't believe in "fate" for a football team. Certainly he would never say the rules were stacked against him. I think it's stronger just to be that way. Polian's approach reminds me of companies that are always publically talking about their values and culture.

quite a number actually. as examples:

1) that the Colt's opponent can have 11 men on the field

2) that the Colt's opponent gets four downs

3) that the Colt's opponent doesn't have to go 15 yard for a first down

4) that the Colt's opponent doesn't have to kick off from their goal line

I don't know exactly what he meant. Colts.com certainly wasn't going to do the follow up inquiry...

I guess giving him the benefit of the doubt, he might have generally meant all the NFL rules to ensure parity--winners play tougher schedules, draft lower, etc--those types of "rules".

I never would have noticed this as much until the last few years of learning to appreciate and understand BB's approach. Now, I think Polian talks too much for Indy's own good.

I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say where the rules are stacked against you clinching the division 5 times. the question was about winning the division 5 times

Same rules that are stacked against the Pats doing that as well.

The NFL rules are designed against a team winning the division 5 years in a row, which is what makes the Pats and Colts dynasties so impressive.

I could be wrong but it sounds like he is saying the rules are stacked against you in maintaining a winning team on a consistant basis.

edit to add: I guess I should have read the whole thread before responding, most of you have pretty well said the same thing I did. I admit he is a tool with a big mouth and should just STFU most of the time.

I'm a Pats fan but agree with this take on the quote. I think Polian meant this statement was geared towards the fact that the salary cap and draft order makes it very hard for teams to compete year in and year out.

Lord, you patsfans take every little comment and run with it. Relax, take that chip off your shoulder and enjoy your record setting undefeated team instead of trying to make a mountain out of every molehill you see.

The douche should have stated it differently if he didn't want to come off like a douche. There's nothing that annoys more than someone patting themselves on the back and complaining about something at the same time. The rules are not stacked against the Colts.

The Colts are not a dynasty, BTW. They are a good team that has a had a good run. Two wins does not make a dynasty, let alone one.

If you get upset so easily maybe you shouldn't go out of your way to subject yourself to every little thing Polian says. I'm sure he cares that you think he should phrase things differently and all though.

How am I upset? He's annoying and his remarks smack of douchebaggery. That does not make me upset. That's not a petition for him to change his ways; I don't care if he does or not. It's simply an observation and if he wasn't the GM for the Colts many Colts fans (who just love being a nicer team than everyone else) would feel the same way. Piss off.

You do know that Pats have homefield throughout the play-offs.

That'll help you next year during the regular season when the Pats come to Indy.

Polian has distorted the rules of the Game to make a great passing attack have much more ability to dominate and win every week. the penalties for contact and Pi are much more common than heretofore.

Proof of the statement. Air Coreyell never won a Super bowl. The "Greatest Show on Turf" won exactly once.

As Polian exerted his influence, on the Competition committee, the Colts have been competitive every year with a disaster as a Defense, until last year when they parleyed a great passing offense and a merely respectable Defense for a few weeks, to win a Super bowl.

Belichick is not a fool. He views the world realistically. He would rather join them than fight them. Or simply lose and rage about the unfairness of it all. Belichick instead constructed a great passing Offense and is producing an undefeated team, that some are saying is the "best", whatever that is, of all time.

The majority of Super bowl winning teams over the years have had very good defenses and balanced offenses that could both run and pass with a preference for rushing. Not anymore. The great balanced teams are merely mediocre in the present environment dictated by the Rules of today. Look at the Steelers and Jags.

The last time this occurred was in the first few years of the AFL in the 1960s, when that league was trying to get noticed; and just did not have enough defensive players to make a difference.

I get sensitive about 141 penalty yards to 25.

And yes, turning up the heat did help the Colt because most of the Pats had or were getting over the flu.
