This is just wrong. Please stop repeating it. The league sent out memos before BOTH the 2006 and 2007 seasons. (Admittedly it wasn't three days before the start of THIS season, but you're calling a guy on misinformation by providing additional misinformation)

You're wrong. The official NFL statement regarding the Pats punishment indicated only Sept 6 2006. The presumption of 2007 was advanced in order to make the Pats look worse. I guess you bought it.

The problem is, the article first appeared on Patriots.com, but now is absent from the archives. The NFL.com archives are a labyrinth, an example of poor work, and the AP copy referencing the NFL press release only excerpts from that statement, and does not include the relevant portion. For whatever reason, that statement has been virtually buried. So give me some time.

Here is the official statement from Goodell issued on September 13, 2007. In it he announces the Patriots' punishment and clearly states that a memo regarding videotaping policies was sent out to teams on Sept 6 2006. No mention at all is made of Sept 6, 2007, which would have been relevant to the punishment.

Here is the subsequent ESPN copy based on the commissioner's statement, which either by mistake, or with the intention to paint the Pats in a worse light, substitutes Sept 6, 2007, for Sept 6, 2006. Notice that the ESPN version is verbatim of the official NFL statement, except for the subtle but significant change in dates from 2006 to 2007.

On Sept. 6, three days before this year's opener against the Jets, the NFL sent a memo to head coaches and general managers. I originally started this thread because, to me, this fact (2006 not 2007) has always been relevent. BB was not being arrogant (or stupid). He was pushing a competive edge. No different to me than continuing to "commit offensive holding" during a game if the refs aren't calling you for it.

As for confusion/interpretation about the videotaping rules, who isn't confused. Which one or ones do you look at (see Mike Reiss's comments below.) Some are enforced. Some are not. Now we learn that some can apparently be ignored if you get permission by the home team!!! What a joke! It's a mess! And every team breaks the bylaws every week!

Well, he said the Pats would sign Asante cheaply next year because Asante wasn't very good, and that after his one lucky year, Asante would implode and not do anything in 2007.

In fairness, he did say on the Two Loonies Fox (now Comcast) Sports Show, "I'll admit, Asante suprised me."
