FYI: Felger just stated on Patriots Game Day that BB was arrogant to put his cameraman on the Jets sideline just 3 days after the league memo came out. He still does not realize that the Anderson memo came out in 2006, not 2007.

As correctly reported by Mike Reiss several times:

In a memo to NFL head coaches and general managers on Sept. 6, 2006, NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson wrote: "Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches' booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

Michael, the league didn't enforce that memo FOR AN ENTIRE SEASON!!!

What a tool!!

I guarantee he knows it came out in 2006. I've emailed him the info at least 3 times.

Felger DOES know the truth. He is lying to manipulate public opinion and fit his agenda. If an informed person ever calls him on it, he can claim "confusion", and use his favorite mantra "It's just sports! Who cares?". This lie was started by ESPN and spread throughout the country and has yet to be corrected.

This is just wrong. Please stop repeating it. The league sent out memos before BOTH the 2006 and 2007 seasons. (Admittedly it wasn't three days before the start of THIS season, but you're calling a guy on misinformation by providing additional misinformation)

You're wrong. The official NFL statement regarding the Pats punishment indicated only Sept 6 2006. The presumption of 2007 was advanced in order to make the Pats look worse. I guess you bought it.

Everything about Felger is bent...moron can't even piss in the media correctly.

Someone needs to prove which one it is.

If you're correct, then this thread stays. If you're not, then this thread is trashed.

I'll give a few hours.

Hold on! Just got back. I'm looking. It's in Roger Goodell's complete official statement on the punishment. The problem is, the article first appeared on Patriots.com, but now is absent from the archives. The NFL.com archives are a labyrinth, an example of poor work, and the AP copy referencing the NFL press release only excerpts from that statement, and does not include the relevant portion. For whatever reason, that statement has been virtually buried. So give me some time.

That's good enough. Thread is saved.

("Yay!")

There's only 1 thing Felger can get straight and that's when he's watching Favre.

Here is the official statement from Goodell issued on September 13, 2007. In it he announces the Patriots' punishment and clearly states that a memo regarding videotaping policies was sent out to teams on Sept 6 2006. No mention at all is made of Sept 6, 2007, which would have been relevant to the punishment.

In a memo to NFL head coaches and general managers on September 6, 2006, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson said, “Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.”

Here is the subsequent ESPN copy based on the commissioner's statement, which either by mistake, or with the intention to paint the Pats in a worse light, substitutes Sept 6, 2007, for Sept 6, 2006. Notice that the ESPN version is verbatim of the official NFL statement, except for the subtle but significant change in dates from 2006 to 2007.

On Sept. 6, three days before this year's opener against the Jets, the NFL sent a memo to head coaches and general managers. In it, Ray Anderson, the league's executive vice president of football operations, wrote: "Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches' booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.

This ESPN copy proliferated via the AP, and became the source document in newspapers and websites around the country. IOW, the error of one incompetent or malicious copyboy became accepted as gospel and contributed to further smearing of the Patriot franchise, exaggerating the timing of the infraction for dramatic effect. This is an example of ESPN, and sports reportage, at its worst.

Further comments about this error can be found in the following thread:

I originally started this thread because, to me, this fact (2006 not 2007) has always been relevent. BB was not being arrogant (or stupid). He was pushing a competive edge. No different to me than continuing to "commit offensive holding" during a game if the refs aren't calling you for it.

As for confusion/interpretation about the videotaping rules, who isn't confused. Which one or ones do you look at (see Mike Reiss's comments below.) Some are enforced. Some are not. Now we learn that some can apparently be ignored if you get permission by the home team!!! What a joke! It's a mess! And every team breaks the bylaws every week!

==================================================

Mike Reiss: Here are some of the league's rules regarding videotaping procedures:

In the NFL's operations manual, it states that "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." Furthermore, all video shooting locations for coaching purposes "must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

In the league's Constitution & Bylaws, it reads: "Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game."

Don't forget, the Pats lost a FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK for this! Total BS!!

Felger was also the same rocket-scientist that insisted right after each one was signed, the day after, that they were collosal mistakes. Those signings were (Corey Dillon and Randy Moss). OK Mike, what else you got ?????

Well, he said the Pats would sign Asante cheaply next year because Asante wasn't very good, and that after his one lucky year, Asante would implode and not do anything in 2007.

In fairness, he did say on the Two Loonies Fox (now Comcast) Sports Show, "I'll admit, Asante suprised me."
