Why Moss Is More Impressive Than Jerry Rice

WHY MOSS IS MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN JERRY RICE (RE: TOUCHDOWN RECORDS)
1. Randy Moss is in mid-career and already has THREE 17+ touchdown seasons -- Jerry Rice is retired and had TWO 17+ touchdown seasons.
2. Moss has done this as a rookie.
3. Moss has done this under two different quarterbacks.
4. Moss has done this for two different teams.
5. Moss had to play against full-strength starters and did not enjoy playing in a strike season against replacements.
6. Moss has lead two teams to the #1 and #2 NFL Record for "Most Points Scored in a Season"
7. Moss has lead two teams to the #1 and #2 NFL Record for "Most Yards in a Season"
8. Moss had 10 touchdowns for 40 yards or more in 1998, his rookie year.
9. Moss has done it twice without a hall of fame QB.
10. Up until Brady this year, Moss has not played with a hall of fame QB at all, while Jerry Rice had a Hall of Fame QB every single one of his 16 seasons.*
11. Randy Moss is on pace to beat the single game touchdown record, his first time with a hall of fame QB.
*12. Both Randy Moss and Jerry Rice had unremarkable seasons with the Raiders.
13. Catching 22 touchdowns in a year when everyone else was busy looking for another job because they didn't know if the NFL would exist or not is not impressive.
14. In this day and age, scoring 17+ touchdowns even once is more impressive than Jerry Rice's 22 touchdown record.

Nice points. I would also add that he played with some average to terrible qbs in his years in Minnesota and Oakland (although he was injured in Oakland and the offensive line was abysmal so he didn't have good production).

1991 - Rice had 80/1206/14; Montana only played 11 games, attempted only 279 passes, and threw 17 TDs; Steve Bono and Bill Musgrave threw the 49ers' other 242 pass attempts and 12 TDs

1995- when Young was injured again, and Elvis Grbac threw 30 percent of the 49ers passes. Rice had 1848 receiving yards and 15 TDs

1996 - Rice had 108/1254/8; Young only played 12 games, attempted only 316 passes, and threw 14 TDs; Elvis Grbac and Jeff Brohm threw the 49ers' other 231 pass attempts and 9 TDs

In the cases above, not sure how to find game logs to compare his performance with the different QBs, but it seems pretty unlikely that he compiled a disproportionate amount of his statistics with Montana and Young as opposed to the other QBs.

2002 - Rice had 92/1211/7 at age 40; Rich Gannon was his QB with Oakland with a super Bowl appearance thrown
So, just because Rice was fortunate enough to play with two all time great QBs does not mean he wouldn't have been productive with other QBs.

As far as Rice's comments, I wish he had just said he'd congratulate Moss. No need to feel defensive about his accomplishments. Just because he said this doesn't mean there is a need to diminish Rice's accomplishments.

In 2004 AV had a QB rating of 122.9, PM had a QB rating of 121.1, BTW 9 other players had even higher QB ratings 4 having QB ratings of 158.3.

BTW this year 3 players have a higher QB rating than Tom, LT has a 158.3.

Now that you guys mention it, I'm pretty sure that Randy Moss has a higher passer rating than Rice. I was wondering when they would let him throw the ball. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Maybe they are holding back some more trick plays for the playoffs.

Why was 17 TDs arbitrarily chosen as the standard here?

Rice "only" had 2 17+ TD year....but how about 13 TD years? In his first 11 seasons in the league, he had 8 13 TD years to Moss's 5.

Why can't 13 be the number?

Rice was simply a better receiver who had a better career. Both are HoF WRs...

I think Moss is unbelievable but I dont think hes more impressive than Jerry Rice. The game has changed so much since the time of Jerry Rice. Its now a WR's game. Things have gotten so much easier with all the new rules. I guarantee you that if Rice was in his prime and playing today under a QB like Brady, you'd be tripping over your tongue when you read his stats after each week.

A. Rice played with multiple QBs too. OK, they were Montana and Young, but still ...

B. Rice didn't play against strike replacements. People weren't worried about their jobs; the strike was settled. The only difference the strike made is that guys were out of shape -- which was probably an advantage for notoriously hard worker Rice, who can presumed to have NOT been out of shape.

C. It's easier to get passing stats nowadays than it used to be. Saying the opposite is just silly.

And by the way, Candlestick Park (or whatever they call it now) is not a QB paradise, any more than the Northeast is.

Why is there an obsession by some people to say our guy is better than (insert name of hall of famer)? There are at least one or two threads like this every week. And Jerry Rice of all people this time, who is the undisputed greatest receiver of all-time and second best is not even close.
