Haren to Diamondbacks - implications for Sox

With Haren off the market seems to me that such a move could jump start the Santana talks again with both the Red Sox and the Yankees... with the Yankees now to be even MORE desperate now that Haren's gone (yes, Bedard is a possibility, but I wouldn't want to bank my season on Baltimore trading within the division)

For the Sox, Santana's a win win with a need for another ace caliber starter after next season - why not get one early and keep the Yankees weak.

For the Yankees, the price probably just went up for them with Haren gone - which is also good news for the Sox if they give up their young pitching

I don't know if the Yankees go back for Santana, they already gave a deadline which passed. If they go back again, after what happened with A-Rod, they pretty much lose all credibility whenever they say something.

I still think the Sox are in a good position, just offer Lester and those other less known minor leaguers and Crisp, don't budge on Ellsbury and see if the Twins will do it or not. If the Yanks bid over us, fine, they'll have to overpay.

The Yankees have already made it clear that adding Hughes in the first place was a mistake, and that they wont do it again. This is Cashman talking, not Hank, so I don't think thats an idle threat that Hank has already made himself well known for.

And the Sox have never stopped talking with the Twins, the Twins just keep on asking for more and aren't satisfied that the market for Santana isn't as enormous as they want. They're apparently asking for Buchholz in addition to the Ellsbury/Masterson/Lowrie offer. Considering that the jewel of the Haren trade (Carlos Gonzalez) was just ranked the 23rd best prospect in baseball, adding both Ellsbury (13th) and Buchholz (6th) into a package for Santana is overkill, and I'd take Lowrie and Masterson over the other guys in the Haren trade any day of the week. The fact Beane settled on quantity over quality can only help Boston.

I'm surprised that Haren was let go for such low level prospies.
He's got a controlled salary and had the AL's 3rd lowest ERA too.
That's a pretty darn good deal for a starting pitcher.

I can only assume Beane was motivated to sell high on Haren. He probably doesn't expect him to be great going forward.

As for the Santana talk, I am fine as long as I ignore the input of uninformed outsiders who need a story. I assume that the Sox are right around where they were a week ago. Minnesota can have Lester, Coco, Lowrie, and Masterson or Ellsbury, Lowrie, and Masterson. I assume that any talk about Buchholz is just a reporter feeling he needs to spice things up.

If you listen to reporters the Sox have been continually bidding against themselves, because that's a better story than the fact that the Sox are being patient because they have no holes and can be patient while the Twins are waiting for something to happen (Sox get impatient, Yankees re-enter things for whatever reason with a motivated offer, some other team gets involved).

I love the fact that a little waiting doesn't effect the thinking of Boston's front office. I'd have gotten impatient and told Minnesota to screw themselves by now. Others might have just given Minnesota what they wanted. Theo and Co. are thankfully much more responsible and won't be affected by a little waiting.

Everyone says the Red Sox are the frontrunners... but I'm with you. The Yankees are more desparate.

I'd agree if the Twins didn't covet Ellsbury, which they do. Considering Buchholz and Chamberlain aren't available, Ellsbury is supposedly the guy Minnesota most wants in a trade.
