OT: Clark Haggans UFA this offseason

Haggans, Steelers OLB will be an unrestricted free agent. He's 30, serviceable and a good rotational player. Wouldn't be surprised if the Pats look at him in addition to Victor Hobson of the Jets for LB depth. The Steelers may transition this offseason to the 4-3 Tampa 2 that Tomlin is familiar with.

He'd be a decent addition, but I really want the Pats to make a concerted run at SS Bob Sanders. From what I've read he'll be a FA. BB reported loved him before his draft, and it'd seriously hurt Indy while giving us an heir apparent to Rodney Harrison.

I'm not sure they can franchise Sanders. I may be wrong but I though he had voidable years on the end of his contract and a franchise tag can only be used if a player actually reaches to end of the contract. Patrick Kerney was in a similar situation last year.

Of course I might be wrong about Sanders having voidable years, in which case ignore all of the above.

Not sure if the list I read was acurate regarding offensive FA's but some names stand out at RB, Julius Jones and Chargers Turner, who IMO is a pretty impressive back. He just happens to be behind the best in the league. Do you think we'll look at any, Turner in particular or stick with what we've got?

You are wrong. See Freeney last year. He voided the last two years of his rookie deal and was then franchised.

If Harrison retires before 6/2/2008, the Colts would gain $1.2 million in cap space while taking a $10.8 million dead money hit in 2008.

If Harrison retires in 2008 and after 6/1/2008, the Colts would gain $7.6 million in cap space while taking a $4.4 million dead money hit in 200 and $6.4 million dead money cap hit in 2009.

the pats absoultely need speed at ILB. the defense would go up another level if they did. need some ILB's who can take on guards.

He would be a could pickup, my preference would be to draft someone but that is not the Patriots style.

Indy may not be able to franchise Sanders because Dallas Clark is a FA as well, and they would probably franchise him first.

Of course, if they are able to sign one of them before FA starts then the other will get the tag. I'm sure they will try to do that.

They also have some FA on the OL they will probably lose. I think both Jake Scott and Ryan Lilja are FA, and given their past history they are more likely to sign Sanders and Clark over those guys. They are bound to lose one while replacing the other through the draft.

I like Sanders, but the guy is injury prone. With his size and hard hitting style, it is safe to assume that could be a problem going forward eventhough he is having a relatively healthy year this year. The money he is going to get on the open market may be too much to make it worthwhile.

Haggans is tempting, but we need more help inside than outside. Do we move both AD and Vrabel inside if we get Haggans? Can Haggans play inside? Do we cut Colvin if we get Haggans?

I don't think Indy has a 1st round pick this year so if they are trying to replace an OL via the draft, it will be at best a low 2nd rounder.

So they take a net $9.6 million hit, and can choose to take it all in 2008 or split it between 2008 and 2009? Did I interpret your numbers right?

I absolutely loved Sanders in the draft, and was very disappointed when he went to the Colts. I've since cooled on him. He's still a top safety, but highly-hyped players almost always attract tons of money, and he isn't one of those guys who will take less to play for a contender - he has a ring.

He is better than Sanders, but the money it will cost to upgrade the position is too much. The same money spent on an ILB and/or CB will yield a much larger positive impact on the team.
