Remembering Katzenmoyer

Man,

Wasn't Katz let go because of a vertebrae injury? man, you can't judge a guy as a bust because he had a serious injury. Every frikkin' player has to worry about that one weird injury that could force him to retire.

Katzenmoyer was a good player, and might well have hit it big had he not been injured. Sometimes it's just the luck of the dice.....

I agree. High first round linebackers are few and far between. There is too much talent in the lower rounds and on the FA market.

High first round picks, IMO, are for skill positions - WR, RB, QB, CB.

1st round DE/DL or LB or OL have to be AMAZING and EXCEPTIONAL! I am not sure there are any of those in this year's draft.

We'd never spend a first on a DL. Once again, the expert speaks.

Funny, I always thought teams preferred DL, OL, and LBs as high picks. They're usually considered safe. Their bust quotient is significantly lower than their "skill position" counterparts.

By the way, could you tell me the last time a WR, RB, or CB was selected 1st overall?

Just so you don't bother looking, the answer is 12 years ago... Keyshawn Johnson... a year before that, it was Ki-Jana Carter... then, before that, Bo Jackson in 1986. So let's see, in more than 20 years of drafting, disregarding QBs, Armen's "skill positions" have been picked a grand total of 3 times as the first overall pick. Johnson was a good player, never exceptional... Carter may have been good but was injured before he had a chance... Bo never even played for the team he was drafted by. Great record there.

By the way... in 1986, while the Bucs were selecting Bo with the first pick, they could have had Leslie O'Neal, a Pro Bowl DE with the 8th pick, then took John Taylor in the 3rd. In 1995, instead of Ki-Jana Carter, the Bengals could have had Tony Boselli or Warren Sapp. Curtis Martin was selected in the 3rd round. Terrell Davis was selected in the 7th. In 1996, the Jets could've had Willie Anderson, Jon Ogden, or Simeon Rice... Terrell Owens was a 3rd round selection.

I think the Pats should look at Chris Long.....seems like the type of player that wants to be coached, and would be versatile in the 3-4.

safest 1st round bet is an OT (long?) since you get 12-15 years out of them...
a RB is only gonna give you 7-10 years.
DL also... dorsey will be our pick if he is there, i am convinced.
if dorsey goes #1, we take mcfadden,

or trade down... a move from #2 down to #10 (where we take connor) or so would net us a 1 next year, plus #10 in the 2nd, plus #10 in the 3rd.

we need 2-4 DB's (gay, rodney, wilson, samuel) and 2 LB's (tedy, seau)

of course, if we re-sign some guys (gay, wilson), that lessens the need... do any of you think that any one of rodney, tedy, and seau would stay after a perfect season? no way

i agree... and im sure they will... perfect bloodlines... perfect attitude... perfect 3-4 player... id guess he goes right around 3-7.

Drafting depends of who is available when your position comes up, not what you need. That is a philosophy that divides teams to this day. The Pats will definately target a guy they want or even a wish list, but when their position comes up they will likely draft the best guy on their board if they can't otherwise get the "guy" they wanted. So its not out of the realm of possibility that we will see a LB or even a RB drafted 1st if thats the way the cards fall in the draft.

Umm wasn't he a bust? Why wax poetic over a never was player?
There are better Pats linebackers to talk about. For example, Ted Johnson was a very good MLB in our system. He was limited, but the man could tackle anything and anyone that got in his grasp.

Trade down? It is expected that the Fins will take Dorsey #1 overall... Although the Fins have made some boneheaded moves in the draft so you never know for sure.

When a rebuilding team has several QBs, it means they have NO QB, per John Madden. Draft one. Ryan # 1.

Seriously!? I would think they'd take Brohm or Ryan. They need a quarterback down there, badly. I guess he wouldn't last beyond the Jets or Rams.

If he's still on the Board at #2, you think Belichick takes him?

Taking one of those QB would be a reach (right now). It may changes, of course.

My drafting knowledge is novice at best...but why not send Cassel and the #2pick (hopefully) to Miami for the #1. Then couldn't we trade the #1 down to a team that will sell the house for it? Some fool like Ditka who is willing trade his entire draft board plus next year's #1, etc.

Um, send our backup quarterback who knows the offense in and out to a division rival in order to move up one spot so that we can then trade down? I'm missing the logic here...

You guys thought Katz was a good player? Are we talking about the same guy that briefly played LB for us?

The Katz I remember was physically gifted and mentally worthless. Maybe he could have matured into a decent player if he ever learned the playbook. But what little I saw of the guy was enough to convince me he was clueless an assignment blown on almost every play that was not a straight ahead run between the tackles.

Hey somebody who remembers that Katzenmoyer was actually a bust. It's funny how fuzzy memory can revise history into something a lot rosier than it actually was.
