I have been thinking what team might be willing to trade for the SF#1 offering another pick and a veteran LB.

I thought maybe Atlanta But any opinions ???

If we can't get Matt Chatham back, that is a decent plan.

A semi-serious scenario would be to trade the pick for Suggs. Suggs is an UFA who will likely get franchised. If the Ravens franchise him we could trade the pick contingent on a long-term contract being signed.

Suggs is a probowl player in his prime (25 years old I believe), he will cost less than the #2 overall draft pick.

I know a plan where we can get both: We trade the pick to the Niners for Banta-Cain and the Jets (?) for Chatham. The Jets and Niners will work out a time-share where they jointly decide on the pick, and the drafted player plays 8 games for each team. He can only be traded with consent from both teams.

I think we should trade the pick for Eugene Lockhart and David Howard, two LB's with plenty of experience. Maybe we can get the trading partner to throw in a couple of picks and a veteran corner like Ron Francis to help ease the potential loss of Asante.

Seriously, any veteran LB that is young and good will not be traded for what we are offering, middle-aged and good will be too expensive, old and good duplicative (at best) of what we already have, and any age and not good available on the waiver wire sometime after the draft.

That just shows how out of whack the rookie salaries are. Doesn't show that Suggs is a bargain.

Technically you could sign any FA to a long term deal and not have to give up any picks.

Suggs and Baltimore's #1 isn't a bad trade, but it's not an exceptional one either. I think we can do better than that. If they threw in a #2 as well, maybe, but we're talking the 2nd pick in the draft here.

Sure they may make us take Carpenter to complete the deal.

This is a pretty funny thread - I realize most folks aren't serious here... but indeed the type of LB we to make an immediate impact probably isn't going to be found late in the 1st round, let alone the 2nd or 3rd.

There's guys there that can develop into great players - but any rookie, short of the very creme of the crop, won't be able to step in and make a major impact.

Trading for a veteran LB could make sense - but BB has struck out with veterans in the past as well - so nothing is certain there either.

Although I'm not sure of the mechanics of the trade, trading out of #2 to draft a solid LB mid to late 1st round to develop - ALONG with a trade of a fresher legged veteran, would be ideal. I'll leave the details of making that happen to someone else.

Yes, but maybe the pressure of the tag, and the hardship of having to play a year for $8,000,000+ gives the Patriots a liitle leverage.

Honestly I don't think they can afford Moss, a top free agent and a #2 overall pick.

Well to be fair, Ryans was a second rounder last year and has been an impact lb. Beason is doing well in Carolina was a mid-late 1st rounder. Lofa Tatupu was a early seconds rounder. Manny Lawson another late first rounder has done well in San-Fran before getting hurt. Harris who is doing well since entering the line-up in NY was a second rounder.
