I watched him yesterday in the Oaklnad-Green Bay game. I have to admit, I really liked the guy coming out of college and now I am so glad the Raiders took him over the Arizona QB and he did not fall to us. At this point, I think Buffalo fans should be extremely glad that the Bills took Whitner over this guy also.
Simply put, Huff played horrible. Maybe it was a 1 game abberation. Maybe he was playing injured, if he's not injured; then double ouch!

it wasnt a 1 game. he hasnt stood out..hasnt played to his capability.

Agree he's been horrible. I think Ryan might be mis-using him. Simplify his role a bit...he seems to have an awful lot of responsibility for a young player.

Al Davis still has alot to do with that D, which is why he always hires offensive head coaches. He meddles, and pushed Huff into that roving 'renegade" position at modified free safety too early as a rookie. Huff has enough athleticism and toughness to make it in the league. In time, and maybe with another team, he will blossom. It's only his 2nd season. Asomugha showed nothing his 1st 3 seasons and now he's a top 5 cb in the NFL.

thats why people around here should be patient with Jackson/Maroney/Meriweather..because were not like other teams that just throw young players in there and say "go play ball"..we develop them and use them when we really need them which ultimately, has them more prepared and play better in future

OR there is the real possibility that Buffalo lucked out and Whitner is simply the BETTER player. That point should also be considered.

I agree. Patience people.

Remember, Buffalo was criticized for taking Whitner so early, 8th overall IIRC. They called it a real reach at the time.

I was never high on Huff. I felt the guy that was overlooked on that team was Michael Griffin. He was the real MVP of the Longhorns secondary. Who is playing pretty well for the Tennessee Titans even though the team has not.

I'll take performance over hype any time. Whitner has fit Buffalo's defense like a glove. Huff is struggling. They were taken at back to back picks. Is it too hard to believe that Buffalo might have gotten the pick RIGHT and Oakland messed up?

When did Whitner become an all-pro? The guy's a decent starting safety, nothing more at this stage. As of now he's still a reach at #8.

hes actually a very good safety. from games i've seen and things i've heard

Griffin looks like he could grow into an above average DB in the Titans defense. I was imprssed with him when we faced him and the Titans in the preseason
I think Whitner is becoming a very good safety. He's playing on a young, beat up defense and missing FS Ko Simpson as well. I think if Buffalo's defense ever gets healthy and the young players mature a little, they could be in the top half of NFL defenses.

Between Game 1 and his rookie season, when Whitner picked off Brady, and this Sunday when he picked off Cleo Lemon, Whitner went 27 games without intercepting a pass. Until he picked off Cleo Lemon, Whitner had not got his hand on the football all season: 0 passes defensed. His only impact play of the season was a meaningless forced fumble in the 56-10 blowout vs the Pats. Whitner is a solid player in run support. He does not make game changing plays. As of now, he is not an impact player, and when you're drafted in the top 10 and you're not an impact player IMO that's a reach.

he wasnt drafted as a ball hawk. hes a physical, smart, sound player.

I'm not sure you can say that Whitner is a liability in the passing game when the corners and FS are so poorous. It is very easy for a QB to throw from him with so many others wide open.

A top 10 pick should be an elite talent. At this stage, Whitner is a solid starting safety who hasn't yet shown game changing ability. He's been very durable which is a big plus for the position. It's only his 2nd season, so hopefully he'll improve. But IMO he hasn't done nearly enough to vindicate Marv Levy for drafting him #8. An argument can be made that Bernard Pollard, Calvin Lowry, Antoine Bethea, Dawan Landry and Jarrad Page have all been just as good as the #8 overall pick. The fact that Whitner has ouplayed Huff speaks to Huffs' struggles thus far, not Whitner's excellence.

Agreed. I still maintain that had Griffin fell to the NE, they would have selected him over Merriweather.
