Statistical Notebook - Tom Brady

I thought I would compile some mostly career statistical facts about Tom Brady. Not that he cares about numbers (or at least publicly admits it), but someday we will all be marveling at what he accomplished. In fact, already, after only 7.5 years in the league (6.5 as a starter), he is starting to enter the all-time leaderboards in several career passing categories.

But first, a statistical oddity:

Tom Brady's next touchdown pass will tie him with Babe Parilli in two categories:

Most touchdown passes by a Patriots quarterback, season: 31
Most touchdown passes, NFL career: 178

NFL leaderboards

Completions, career: 45th
Touchdowns, career: 42nd

Barring the unspeakable "I" word, , he will be climbing rapidly in these and other categories. For example, if he throws another 20 TD passes this year he will not only break Manning's single season record, but will end the year at #28 on the all time list.

Similarly, he is now only 1,211 yards short of #50 on the all-time passing yards list - a figure he should reach in about 4 games at the rate he is going.

We all gotta be in awe of this guy, we may never see someone this good qb'ing this team ever... amazingly he just seems to be getting better, he will pass all of the pats records and finish at least in the top 5 all time qb's when he retires.

• Brady extended his Patriots season TD pass record to 45.
• Brady's 45 TD passes is the 3rd highest NFL season total, trailing Dan Marino (48) and Peyton Manning (49). He now needs only 5 more in 3 games to break the record.
• Brady extended his Patriots career TD pass record to 192.
• Brady passed the 4,000 yard mark for the second time in his career. The only other Patriot QB to pass for 4,000 yards in a season is Drew Bledsoe, who also did it twice.
• Brady passed for over 300 yards for the sixth time this season and 21st time in his career.
• Brady also has a chance to set the record for most passing yards in a season, needing 990 yards over the next three games to break Dan Marino's mark of 5,084 (1984).
• Brady now has 4,095 passing yards on the season, which is the 3rd highest season passing total in Patriots history. He needs only 16 yards to break his own mark set in 2005 for 2nd place, and 461 yards to pass Drew Bledsoe's team record of 4,555 set in 1994.

Thanks for the research. One other record is Patriots passing yards in a season which IIRC is 4555 in 1994 by Bledsoe, which brady would get with about 540 more yds or so.......

Sorry I was a bit slow to get my update in this week. It was a combination of being busy getting ready for the holiday festivities and not being very excited about Brady's stats last week - not that they matter at all as long as the Pats win ... anyway, without further ado:

Update following 2007 week 15 (game 14), 12/16/2007 (Monday night. results: Jets 10 @ Pats 20. Pats 14-0):

• It was an off week for Brady as he failed to throw a TD pass for the first time this season. The weather conditions certainly affected the passing game - it was 34 degrees at game time with freezing rain and 25 MPH winds with higher gusts.
• It was also Brady's poorest performance of the year in terms of passing yards - he had only 140.
• Brady now has only the slimmest chance to set the record for most passing yards in a season, still needing 850 yards in two games to break Dan Marino's mark of 5,084 (1984).
• Brady now has 4,235 passing yards on the season, which is the 2nd highest season total in Patriots history. He needs 321 yards to pass Drew Bledsoe's team record of 4,555 set in 1994.

• Brady rebounded from his statistically poor performance of a week ago by throwing 3 first half TD passes against the Dolphins.
• In the second half he threw 0 TD passes and 2 INTs (one on a deflection) as he appeared to be trying to force the ball to Randy Moss, probably to help Randy break the NFL record of 22 TD passes in a season set by Jerry Rice.
• Brady is now tied for 2nd place (with Dan Marino 1984) on the NFL season TD pass leaderboard, and one shy of tying Peyton Manning (2004) for first.
• Brady now has 4,450 passing yards on the season, which is the 2nd highest season total in Patriots history. He needs only 105 yards to pass Drew Bledsoe's team record of 4,555 set in 1994.

• Brady threw two TD passes, setting a new NFL record for TD passes in a season with 50, vs. only 8 INTs. He surpassed Peyton Manning, who held the previous record with 49.
• On the same play that resulted in Brady breaking the TD pass record, Randy Moss broke Jerry Rice's NFL record for TD receptions in a season - Moss has 23.
• Brady finished the season with 4,806 passing yards on the season, which is the highest season total in Patriots history and the 3rd highest total in NFL history (Dan Marino 5,084, Kurt Warner 4,830).
• Brady's passer rating for the season was 117.2, the second highest rating in NFL history.

• I haven't done this for a few weeks due to being busy and to Brady's poor start coming back from the knee injury, but boy is he back now! Last week he broke an NFL record by throwing 5 TD passes in one quarter as the Pats beat the Titans 59-0! Over the past 2 weeks they have outscored their opponents 94-7!
