Still waiting for classic Seymour: Hard to believe, since some people regard Richard Seymour as the best defensive lineman in the league, but Patriots coaches and club officials are less than thrilled by the performance of the five-time Pro Bowl performer in the five games in which he has played.

Seymour has just 11 tackles, has yet to notch a sack, and isn't close to the dominant form he's displayed in the past. The seven-year veteran began the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after offseason knee surgery, and there were a few reports, which proved erroneous, that he would not play at all in 2007. Given the cryptic manner in which the Pats' organization deals with injuries, the extent of the knee damage and the type of surgery required has never been revealed, either by Seymour, his representatives, or club officials. And it's not known if it's the residual effects of the knee injury that are restricting Seymour.

But whatever the reason, Seymour isn't playing up to his standards, or those expected of him by his employers. One of Seymour's strong suits is his versatility, the ability to play end in the Pats' base 3-4 front, then to slide down inside to tackle on passing downs, or when New England changes into a four-man front, as it did frequently against Baltimore on Monday night.

But Seymour hasn't been very effective in either role so far this season. And in the Monday night victory at Baltimore, in which the Ravens' line carved open big holes for tailback Willis McGahee, the veteran lineman too often lost gap integrity. New England understands that Seymour probably won't be 100 percent recovered this season. But the Pats are paying their 2001 first-round pick a lot of money -- one survey tabbed him as the NFL's highest paid player in terms of total compensation for 2006 -- and they want to see a little more return on their investment.

in Seymour i still believe...

Trade him! (and Maroney)

Why pay these salaries when you have a better backup in Green and even in Morris at RB???

Trade him, give the money to Moss and your first round draft pick!

Since I'm not an "ESPN insider" I was unable to read the article in total. The portion quoted above is typical, however, in that there are no team sources identified or quotes to confirm what Pasquarelli is saying. Without attribution or confirmation from team or payer representatives, this is all Len's speculation. While I understand how he arrived at this conclusion, it still provides no factual evidence. In other words, this is just another BS editorial skirting the team's no tell policy and inferring that the author has inside information when in reality, he has no information that's not readily available to anyone inside or outside of pro football. Any one of the posters on this board could have written this article (and probably have done a better job).

More pablum for the masses . . . . Take it for what it's worth . . .

I hope Seymour steps up vs the Steelers. We will need him at his best to shut down Willie Parker. The Pats run D had a meltdown vs the Ravens and they can't afford to do that vs Pitt.

Seymour is what 4-5 games into this season after injury. His body is still in preseason mode. Give him time to get it together.

Gezzzzz the fans want instant perfection......Mariney, Merriweather, Jackson

BE PATIENT !

Meanwhile, the article is COMPLETELY accurate. Seymour has been PUTRID this season. I'm no Pastabelli fan but there's nothing wrong in that article, IMO. Seymour's been a ghost.

Would you guess this might have something to do with the Pat's first round pick? Santonio Thomas played RDE quite well against the run, while Green clearly excels against the pass. However it takes a very elite RDE to do both well in the 3-4, the kind of player the Pat's would draft with a mid-to-high first round pick.

Is this all a result of Seymour playing fullback and getting hurt on a goaline play?

Nothing wrong with admitting that Seymour's not playing up to expectation. He'd be the first to admit it. The past 2 weeks specifically, he's been matched up against Jon Ogden, probably the biggest LT in the league and like Seymour, a certain HOFer, and Shaun Williams, probably the best LG in the NFL. That's 2 tough matchups and they likely wont get any tougher than those 2 for Seymour. He'll be matched up on Faneca, who's a little old and nowhere near the player he once was. Should be an interesting matchup.

But on Seymour in general terms going forward into next year and beyond, the guy's been nothing but a gladiator in leading this team to 3 World Titles. Ill go to bat for this guy to the bitter end. Cut him some slack fellas. Please.

I love Seymour but he needs to play better. I feel the he has had enough time return to his old self again. I hope that todays game is game that the real Seymour shows up.

Hasn't been the same since.

Richard Seymour has nothing to gain from playing hard. His contract is

not up until the end of 2009. I expect him to have a super year in 2009

so as to get a huge contract for 2010. I imagine he is seething that

his contract is not as good as Dwight Freeny's contract. I expect him

to be a hold out from training camp in the near future to get the Pats

to add a million or two to his existing contract and then leave for free

agency in 2010.

I would greatly doubt this. The Pats have shown a willingness to take a hard line in virtually all cases, Seymour's first holdout one of the rare exceptions. His play wouldn't give him any leverage to do it again at this point.

I don't think there's any question, though, the Pats should and will draft for the front 7 in the draft--if I had to guess, I think they'll use the pick rather than trade it, as commonly supposed, in order to get an elite D player.
