With their star RB and dominant running game. Do you think the vikings will trade up and leap frog atlanta to grab matt Ryan?

Right now the mock draft has the dolphins then us then the falcons.

Tavaris Jackson was a late 2nd rounder early 3rd rounder. So its not like they wasted a 1st round pick on him. Right now the Vikings are 31st in the league in passing yards. So they need to be able to throw the ball. Their total yards and pts are ranked at 10th, so once you just improve the passing yards the vikings could easily be 9-3, instread of 6-6.

Their WR corp is full of average players.
Randy moss could sign with the vikings again and if Matt Ryan plays well enough in his rookie year combined with a dominant running game the vikings could have a shot for the playoffs and be strong for the future.

Adrian Peterson has a very good potential to be the tom brady of the NFC.

Vikes see Jackson as their QB of the future. He's been improving of late.

^
the vikes are 31st in passing yards, so yeah a lot of room to improve.

a 1st round top 3 pick < 2nd 32 pick QB that is improving lately?

If the vikes can find a free agent QB they might just go that route. Their WR core is so crappy. So they have to look at the draft, because going heavy hunting in the NFL free agent market is hard.

I agree with Tunescribe here, Jackson has been playing pretty well lately. Other teams certainly have more glaring needs at QB than the Vikes, and the Vikes have needs in other places too (WRs and DBs comes to mind).

Is Ryan rated that highly as an NFL prospect?

Mods - Please move this to a place where people actually freaking care what the Vikes do

Alll This draft talk in december is totally moronic and really has no place in the main forum right now.

Comparing a RB Adrian Peterson to a QB Tom Brady??? :bricks: :bricks: :bricks:

Right. Where does Ryan now stack up to Brian Brohm, Chase Daniel, and Colt Brennan? Is he rated over them at this point?

i think they are gonna pass on QB early because Jackson has played a lot better recent weeks and the team is like 6-2 when he starts or some good record

Matt Ryan and Brian Brohm are considered the top two qbs available. They're both expexted to be top-10 picks. Andre Woodson and Colt Brennan are considered potential first rounders as well...

IMO cold weather cities will be drawn to Ryan, because he has played so many games in crappy weather for a blue collar team and has been unfazed. This will make him a very attractive candidate at QB for Baltimore, Chicago and KC. IMO Carolina will also be very interested. He is very tough mentally, which will appeal to Fox.

Carolina should be interested. Don't see Vikings making a big splash. Plus, as the Vikes play better and better. That pick will drop to about 20. Don't want to go that low. Carolina may not win another game. Should be desperate for a qb. Not sure what Baltimore is going to do about their situation. Agree about KC and Chi. I would think Chicago wants a vet. D.McNabb maybe?? D.Anderson also a restricted fa at the end of the year. Someone could make a big splash for him.

Don't think anyone trades up for him. He isn't clearly better than about 4 other guys, one of whom will be available to the Vikings where they are, most likely.

I personally don't think he's anything special.

Plus if they pick him #2, they have to pay him 8M per year. Kind of puts a big burden on the team financially.

Anyone picked #2 basically has to be an all-pro can't miss player. Which is why it's kind of ridiculous.

We could see a couple of trade downs though. We might be able to move down to 5-6 if someone likes D.McFadden. Then, if Brohm goes to Atlanta. Somebody else may not want to wait to see if Ryan drops to them. Carolina maybe?? I agree with you that I don't see someone trading up to 2 for a qb this year. But, another poster mentioned multiple trades down. Seems plausible.

the vikings dont have crappy dbs, windfield is pretty good. Both of their safeties are also good. They play 4-3 so they lack mlb and ends.

They have sound defence for the NFC and also a great running game all the need is a high calibre QB. If the patriots go undefeated then pioli will most likely trade down and a lot of teams know this, so the vikings with a sound running game and defence will mostlike trade up to go for the gusto.

Remember the steelers won the superbowl with a power running game and a mobile young QB that was able to manage the game and not make mistakes.

That was a few years back, the vikings could be that team next year. They have good safeties and dbs. Both their DT are good. They suck at QB and WR that is why they are 31st in the leage in pass yards, yet they are like 12 in totals offensive yards and 10th in defence.

10th in defence, is what 5 afc 5 nfc teams. guess what, the viking with their defense could easily be a playoff team next tear. Or they could wait for a high 3rd round pick to develope.

I said potential I never said he is brady, or compared him to brady. Brady has been proven peterson has not, but with his raw skills and talent he can be the tom brady of the NFC, meaning the impact player that no other team has in the NFC.

And I thought I was slo.

ok so he is proven. Childress has a chance to put his stamp on the vikings if he can bring in his own 1st round QB and 1st round running back.

How long you want to wait? If they were like 15th or 20, then yeah, but 31st!?!

With such a threat in the running game why can the play action bomb be used to gain huge yards? Maybe jackson sucks at the deep ball.

You could very well be right about Ryan being nothing special. I've watched him alot and one thing I can say about him is he's used to experiencing pressure, causing him to throw from different arm slots into small windows. This is exactly what NFL Qbs experience, which gives Ryan a leg up on QBs from better programs, who have very good protection and elite skill position athletes surrounding them. Another thing I like about Ryan is his height, quick release and quick decision making. He sees the field well, gets the ball out in a blink and is decisive. He can take a beating, is a humble studious guy and his mates love him. He has good mechanics, but is not mechanical. Haven't seen alot of Brohm, so I can;t say if Ryan is better than Brohm. Watched Woodson alot. Kind of reminds me of Jason Campbell. Better arm, a bit more mechanical than Ryan with a slower release.

Why are you 31st in the league in passing??

other teams: because we cant run the ball and their DBs and LBs play deep.

Vikings: We can run the ball their dbs and Lbs play closer to the line but our WR and QB sucks that is why we are 31st in the leage in passing yards, yet we jump 20 spots!! when it comes to total yards per game, due to our monster running game.

The Vikes problem is Jackson has noone to throw to. I know Sidney Rice has improved his game, but QBs need WRs that can catch. In fact, the last decent WR the Vikes had was some guy named Randy Moss. If the Vikings needed to draft something, they need to draft a DeSean Jackson.
