Here are some facts regarding our running game:

Here’s how the ground games of the only five teams that matter stack up against each other:

NFL's BIG FIVE on the GROUND
Team Attempts YPA First Downs % Firsts* TDs Fumbles % Run
Pittsburgh 405 4.10 77 19.0 7 6 52.87
Indy 358 3.97 98 27.4 15 1 45.60
Dallas 335 4.36 70 20.9 11 3 45.70
NE 356 4.09 103 28.9 13 2 43.95
Green Bay 270 3.79 46 17.0 9 3 35.81

* Percentage of run plays that result in a first down

Among the five best offenses in football, the Patriots rank:
No. 3 in rush attempts
No. 3 in yards per rush attempt
No. 1 in rushing first downs
No. 1 in the percentage of runs for a first down
No. 2 in rushing TDs
No. 2 in fewest fumbles
No. 4 in percentage of run plays

most of these tools are busy being awed by Moss-Welker-Stall-Watson that they forget the COLD HARD FACTS.

Good summary

Thanks for the link. Once again, CHFF puts the truth in its rightful place. Still don't think it's enough to stop the "Maroney's A Bust" or "The OL Sucks" threads, but why would anyone want the facts to get in the way of a good rant!

It would be curious to see how these numbers were before and after Morris' injury. It seems like we have run it less since he was put on IR, but that stats could tell a different story.

Good thread, nice to see some facts on this whole subject.. I think the Pats are something like #8 in rushing in the whole league.

Just confirmed it. Pats are at #8 with just one less rushing yard than the Cowboys at #7 (we average about 2 more attempts per game than them, however).

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I didn't really think that our rushing game was top 10 worthy. Pretty cool.

I wouldn't say no rushing game, I'd say an unreliable one. if sammy morris was still here we'd be comfortable. faulk runs well but lacks bigtime durability. everyone is panicking because of maroney.

he hasn't produced in bigtime games and until he does he'll lack the confidence of thr fans.

It seems to me we run the ball well from the shotgun with four to six men in the box.

I disagree, watch the tape. The Pats don't seem to get a consistant 3 4 5 yards a carry. It seem more like 2 yards, then one for a loss, then a 9 yarder that skews the average to 4.1 yards a carry.

The run game is lacking regardless of what "average yards per carry" says. If the run game is so great how come the pats almost never punch it in on the goal line?

I think you're right. the line needs to restablish the mentality that they are going to maul.

I wonder how long till this thread becomesan attempted Maroney bashing thread

A couple weeks ago the Pats were #4 behind Minnesota, Pitt, & Jax.

ya and a few weeks back the Pats had sammy morris. the stats are distorted because of early season production and we can't forget brady's long scrambles

If we gained 9 yards on every 3rd rushing play, we would have the best running game ever.
There is not a team in the NFL that gets 3,4,5 yards every running play. IIRC, the last time I research it 50% of all running plays went for 2 yards of less.

(By the way, 2+9+'one for a loss' works out to 3.3 at best)

Wait a minute. Did you just say that the Patriots rushing stats are overstated because of our awesome QB running?

i knew that would get someone's attention. it was tongue in cheek

Unfortunately, the New England Patriots pass run ratio in the last two games has been remarkedly skewed as the statistics below illustrate:

Patriots offense vs Eagles
57 pass attempts (includes sacks)
16 rush attempts

Patriots offense vs Ravens
41 pass attempts (includes sacks)
24 rush attempts

I think it's been pretty situational since sammy went down, but it's a fine line between excuses and reasons.
I don't have much opinion about the pitt game, but I'd expect some pretty good running the 2 weeks after that.

You've got to subract out the sammy morris games since the production in those games will skew the numbers upward from what we can expect going forward during the rest of the season.

When you take out morris-games, my guess would be that this team is below average in rushing.
