Per NFL Network. Prob just filler, but who knows. Would be nice if something was in the works.

What do you think?

Re: Shefter with news on pos Asante deal?

They cannot officially announce anything until after the season, correct?

Dunno. Prolly just filler. However Shefter has a track record these days. He has leaked some big time rumors that turned out true.

Maybe something is in the works.

That said the pats do give fort knox a run for there money with info , so we shall see.

Re: Shefter with news on pos Asante deal?

I thought we were unable to negotiate a new deal until after the season due to the franchise tag rules.

Re: Shefter with news on pos Asante deal?

They actually can sign a long term deal but then we'd lose the Franchise Tag for the length of the deal. But we could have a contract unsigned but sealed and delivered.

Re: Shefter with news on possible Asante deal?

Ba$tards! Lying ba$tards!!!

Correct.

I doubt that the Pats and Samuel are talking now. What would be the point??

Re: Shefter with news on possible Asante deal?

They can talk any time. Just cannot sign a long term deal prior to the start of the last week of the regular season. From then until the FA period opens in March he cannot talk deal with anyone but us.

In the case of Shaun Alexander the Seahawks agreeing to a stipulation that they would not re-tag him led to a willingness on his part to talk about a more reasonable long term deal. They talked throughout the season and signed him to a new deal well in advance of March. The plus for the player in this scenario is he gets his lump sum tag money one year and a nice long term deal with bonus early in the following year. It theoretically allows one side to come down off their high horse without losing face and the other to come up closer to market without upsetting the salary structure apple cart.

Incorrect.
But we could have a contract unsigned but sealed and delivered.

What would happen if Samuel suffers a career-ending injury in Week 17??

Re: Shefter with news on possible Asante deal?

What Shefter said was that Asante had reached his stipulations in the agreement (12 games). Then Shefter talked about Nate Clemons gettting all that money last year.

Re: Shefter with news on possible Asante deal?

Keegs-level rookie move on this thread, danny - even with your precious caveats. It's common knowledge that they can't do a new deal until after the season. LTG.

You sound as paranoid as Samari Rolle.

Incorrect.
Well it was correct, as was explained here :

http://football.calsci.com/FreeAgency.html

"If the player is designated a transition or franchise player and signed immediately to a long term contract, then he retains the tag for the duration of the contract and the team may not use the transition or franchise tag on another player until the contract is done."

Maybe the rules have changed.

Just heard Shefter talk on NFL network. What he said that the Pats agreed not to re-franchise Samuel if they won 12 games. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Huge loss for the Pats and I dont see him sticking around.

That is correct

Samuel is almost certainly gone. The only thing fun about it is seeing just how ridiculous his contract is. I think a STARTING point is the Freeney deal, because really, there are no other top free agents out there.

I see a $90M 7 year deal with $30M guaranteed. Of course, the deal past year 5 or so is all fake, but it will be something like that.

Meanwhile, check out the records of teams with top name CBs:
Baltimore
Oakland
SF
Denver
Philadelphia

Meanwhile the #1 and #2 passing defenses in the leauge are doing it all with draftees or medium pay types at CB:
Steelers - Townsend (4 yr $8M in 06), Ike Taylor (rookie deal, undrafted)
Colts - Jackson (rookie deal, 1st round, 29th), Hayden (rookie deal, 2nd round, 60th overall)
