I believe according to NFL rules if the kicking team kicks out of bounds, the opposing team can either:

a) Accept from spot of where ball goes out of bounds; or

b) Accept the ball 30 yards from the spot of the kick.

In this case, 30 yards from the spot of the kick is the FIVE YARD LINE.

The ballsy I'm-smarter-than-you-jerkoff call would have been to have Gost try to squib one out inside the 10.

I think BB just thought there was a much better chance of them getting into FG range on some freaky return rather than Boller with 44 seconds and 1 TO.

definitely putting an asterick next to Ghost's touchback count this year.

Agreed. It would have been pretty ballsy, and maybe something you'd only try if you had a real Elway-type back there that you actually feared.

i as well was thinking of somthing like this, maybe squib it or somthin, or just loft it up and try and get it at the one, and let your guys (running a much shorter field) try and stuff em inside the 10
but the safest play was just kicking it through the endzone, can't really argue with the call

I was thinking this too, but not a squib. He could have just booted it in the air and hoped it went out close to the goal line. No risk at all really, worst case scenario it makes it into the endzone and the Ravens end up with it at the 20, which is what happened anyway.

Why not just onsides it? If you don't convert, they get the ball at approximately the 20 plus you have a 20-25% chance of icing the game. If you kick it thru the endzone, they have it at the same yard marker and you forfeit your 20% chance of ending it.

I was actually wanting them to go for the onside kick. They would have never seen it coming. But I guess it would be risky.

They should have onsides-kicked it, or squibbed it, or just popped it in the air; anything but a touchback kick through the end zone, which took exactly ZERO seconds off the clock.

Inexcusably stupid.

I have a feeling that the mark-off on an out-of-bounds KO may not have been the 5-yard-line. But that's a very interesting thought. I wonder what the actual result might have been.

Stupid! Who the F\/CK are you? Non of the options were life or death. A tad arrogant eh?

http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/kickoff

"When a kickoff goes out of bounds between the goal lines without being touched by the receiving team, the ball belongs to the receivers 30 yards from the spot of the kick or at the out-of-bounds spot unless the ball went out-of-bounds the first time an onside kick was attempted. In this case, the kicking team is penalized five yards and the ball must be kicked again."

Sounds like it would have been the 5

IRCC, If the kick-off goes out of bounds the other team gets it their 40 yard line regardless of where you kicked off from.
Edit - I stand corrected from post above....

Were you watching the same game? Less than a minute to go, the other team has 1 timeout, the wind is blowing hard and you want to try to onside kick it or try to pop it up instead of preventing any type of return and guaranteeing that the opposing team start at the 20? I am glad you are not calling plays.

tough to pick on them for blasting it through the end zone because it prevent any chance of a fluke return play, but I did want the onsides try last night too. I was unaware that the rule gives the ball to the receiving team 30yds from the kick off spot, I thought it was automatically put on the 40 if it went out. Knowing the rule now, it seems like it would have made sense to try to get it out of bounds anywere inside the 20 which wouldn't have been that hard and would have been a plus.

You know what, I'll betcha that Belichick didn't consider that option. When do you ever kickoff on the opposing side of the field? I'll be honest that I knew the rule but didn't think of it myself.

Kicking it anywhere on the field at the point would have been foolish...but your scenario is very clever.

There was a short field to kick off from on that last kick. Ravens were bunched up because they did not have any field behind them. The on-side kick may have run a little more time off the clock, but the risk wasn't worth it. From the 20, they could set their defense.

Learn something new everyday. That would have been the better call, although I might have split the difference and just told him to kick it OoB inside the ten so there was no chance of return.

However consider that BB might not have known the specific wording of that rule - I certainly thought it ended up at the 40 - and this is one situation I doubt even the Patriots had practiced. I would not have wanted an onside in this situation because of the possibility of something going wrong, and 'coffin cornering' it leaves the possibility of a return.
